A Lllllli I TU THE PAST Perhaps the three most entoyable and most memorable years of our young lrves have been spent here at Englrsh Hrgh School Prom the day we entered to our long awarted graduatron we have enjoyed all the opportunrtres that a hrgh school can offer lt rs my endeavor therefore to brrng to your mrnds the excrtement and pleasures of our s hool days at Lynn Englrsh Do you remember when we frrst entered as sophomores how amazed we were at the hug ness of what was to be our school? Some ot Um would never qualrfy as rurdes rf those frrst few vte ks w re any example of our sense ot drrectron But we frnally drd get settled rn our new lrves and then cam the day that was to be ours We were to tak part rn th presentatron of our grft to the school rn the ceremonres connect d wrth Tree Day exercrs s Chosen as the two Tre Day essays were those of Byron Menrdes and lune Games Wrth Byron readrng the oratron and Ruth MCGIHH pr sentrng th trees the sopho more day turned out to be a proud one for us for we had grven somethrng to the school that had grven us so much lt was at th close of our sophomore year that we chose our class offr ers for the followrng year They were Byron Menrdes presrdent Betty Peckham vrce presrd nt Constance Burke se re tary Margaret Smallwood treasurer and Murrel Perren and Dorothy Cor nelrus executrves Our sophomore days slrpped by all too qurckly and before we knew rt we were enterrng our runror year Thrs was the year that we had looked for ward to wrth the greatest enthusrasm lt was durrng our Junror year that we were fortunate enough to have the magnrfrcent productron of Peter Pan pre sented at our school After weeks of tryouts and prelrmrnarres some of our lass Thesprans earned for themselves the prrvrlege of actrng rn the productron rt was truly an achrevement for a tunror to recerve such honors as drd B tty Durkee Betty Paulsen lane Cody and lune Qurgley who played the lost boys the scoldrng of Ruth MCGIDH who played Lrza added to the success of the delrghtful play Next came the brg event of the year the event every Junror looks forward to th Iunror Prom The word rtself connotes all the excrtement and glamour of the most rmportant socral functron of the year ln an atmosphere of lrons trgers and monkeys we danced to the musrc of lrv Galrs under the Brg Top the honor of Queen of the Prom was b stowed upon our harmrng Betty Peckham whrle versatrle Byron Merrdes won top honors as Krng Our yunror class as an experrment ordered therr class rrngs before becom rng senrors so that the rrngs mrght be worn durrng our last year at school We the class of 1949 were the frst to ena t 'hrs plan and wrth the help of our advrsors rt was a success ln lune of our Junror year we aaarn chose the class offrcers who were to lead us durrng our all rmportant senror year Thrs trme we agarn elected Byron Menrdes presrdent wrth Betty Pe kham vrce presrdent Constance Burke Secretary Lors Mrlls treasurer and lanet Bravos and Irene Frangos executrves Our junror year also brought about the recognrtron of some of our athl tes To lead our football team rn the fall we had Dr k Ashley the boy who proved hrs worth on the grrdrrorr The boys of the baseball dramond chose not one but two captarns Actrng as co captarns lack Nrhan and Fred C1eorge prloted the team durrng our senror year As our basketball captarn Lou Tsroropoulos won a well deserved honor Wrth these fellows as tne leaders of therr re spectrve teams we looked forward to a successful year ot sports at Lynn Englrsh Before we could catch our breath after our actrve junror year, we found THE RED AND GRAY 9 1 - 1 1 . ourselves as full fledged sen1ors class r1ngs and all No more than a month had passed before we beaan tryouts for our Sen1or Drama whrch was The Barretts of Wxmpole Street Because of the small number of g1rls parts the cornpetttron among the grrls was close On the other hand a large number of boys recelved parts because of the several men ot the Barrett household The fmal cast was chosen after much dehberatron and the rehearsals were started W1th Iune Qutgley QIVIHQ a magnlhcent performance as Elrzabeth and Brll Rourke portraylng the romantrc Robert Brownrng we dtscovered for the f1rst tune the talent that was rn our mrdst A wonderful supportrng cast 1nclud1ng lean Kozlowskt as the excltlng Henrletta Betty Paulsen as the hsptng Bella Ruth MCGIUH as Wtlson Murlel Eerren as the rettcent Arabel and B1chard Chandler as the doctor afforded us a f ne play of whtch we were justly proud A short tune later we saw the presentatron of Btrds Chrrstmas Carol The second year dramatrcs class presented thrs short but very good Chrtstrnas play w1th falhng snow and beauttful carols Some ot the players were Barbara O Shaughnessy Sarah May Mar1on Savrno and Tom Culllton Along wlth our soclal events must be 1ncluded our acttve athletlc program Our football team led by captarn Drck Ashley prov1ded a season of ll'LI'1llS W1th such players as Lee Weaver Charhe Frangos Fr d George Ken Bemson Lou Tsloropoulos and rnnurnerable others we rose v1ctor10us over a weak Classrcal team on Thanksgrvmg Day to end a fa1rly successful season Chang mg from the gr1d1ron to the mdoor court we turned out to see our L E H S basketball team tncludrng Lee Weaver Byron Menldes Arnold Klrne hm lVfcGoldr1ck and Dean Brothers complete a very successful year f1n1sh1ng up ln second place A great honor came to our school when Lou Tsroropoulos was rn recognltron of h1s frne performances on the football fteld lt was really a dtstlnctron to have h1m w1n these awards both for hrmself and for our school Lou rs sur to become a success rn hrs athletlc career ln scholast1c frelds our co valedtctortans attatned real emtnence Sumner Germam Lots M1lls and Eugene Zack recelved the envlable honor of achrevmg an H average rn every subject throughout the1r entrre hlgh school career Eugene Zack was selected to represent th1s outstandtng group at graduatlon and present the grft of our class to our school But graduatron IS not the only thought tn our mlnds at thrs ttme we remember good trmes kmd teachers and lasttng frtendshlps Let us never forget the treasures whrch are ours through our three years at Englrsh I-hgh School Margaret Smallwood l949 Statistics nf 1949 Here we have what you have all keen wartlng for the f1nal Stat1st1cs of the Class of 1949 MISS Betty Peckham who was chosen the lovely queen 1n her junror year has rung the bell a second thrrd fourth frfth and slxth ttme and has been chosen by her senlor classmates as M1ss Red and Gray M1ss Personalrty Dxmples Plus LUSCIOUS Brownette and Popular Leader of Cheers That s our Betty Good luck to you always' 10 THE RED AND GRAY Lou Tsloropoulos one of Engllshs great football stars has reached f1rst place as Mr Bulldog Athletlc Boy and Cla s Glant Formerly of Class1cal he transferred to Englrsh We approve' lean Novrello s v1ctor1es as Queen of Fashnon.
