Enqllsh Basketball English had such a fine basketball team this winter that it was inuted to plav IH the Boston Tech Tourney against the finest high school teams in the state In recogmtlon of their ability the boys were pitted against Durfee High of Fall River favorites to win in the tourney The team vsas jittery ln the first quarter and spotted Durfee a ten point lead early in the game Later in the third quarter it closed the Durfee lead to tvso baskets and when Louis Ts1oropoulos Essex County s All star center and guards Billy Whelan and Bob Llcare were removed from the game for five fouls in the fourth quarter Durfee lengthened its lead a a1n to ten polnts winning 45 to 35 English had earned its place 1n the Tech Tourney by finishing a close second in the Essex County League averaging fifty points per game English would have won the County title lf it had not been for some almost unbelievable luck as Johnny Kapnls sank three half court baskets in the second meeting of English and Salem Up to that time English had outplayed Salem ln the entire game Other than the two defeats at the hands of 8alem English defeated each of the other six teams in the league twice Most enjoyable of these English possessed the best offensive trio in the league Our team s highest scorer was Lou Ts1oropoulos who was selected as all star center of the Essex County League He scored 195 noints and finished third highest in the league behind Bob Southwlck of Peabody with 212 points and Martxnelll of Lawrence with 195 points The other two of the trio vs ere co captains and forwards Don Brothers and Mike Carr Brothers scored 183 points to be fourth hlghest of the league and Cair scored 179 points to take fifth place Pete Laganas saw a great deal of service as an alternate forward The guards of the team were Billy Whelan Russ Dunn and Bob Licare The season s record 'English English English English English Enghsh English nglish English English English English English English English English 'Enghsh 34 Quincy 27 54 Gloucester 37 41-Salem 59 41 Lawrence 39 60 Peabody 45 42 Beverly 22 43 Haverh1ll28 59 Gov Dummer 44-Salem 46 Lawrence 30 Peabody 39 Beverly 26 Haverhill 27 Classical 47 Gloucester 37 Classical 39 Durfee 45 ' Not league games 14 RED AND GRAY Academy 58 l . 7. . , , 7 nu 4 - , - , . . . , . . , . 1 ' ' ' - 9 . 7. 5 - Q a u , 3 , - . , - . 7 . . .
