Enqllsh Fnnthall Wlth Billy Whelan as captain our football team made a great showing last fall The team was lnvariably outweighed by lts opponents both 1n the l1ne and in the backfield yet it was able to overcome this lack of brawn by 1tS speed and sk1ll The foundation for the fine record made bv the team must be traced to the excellent coaching of Mr Carl Palombo and h1s assistants Messrs Paul Ierardl l1ne coach and Lou Buffalmo Under the1r superb teaching our team developed one of the finest if not the finest single wing attacks of h1gh school football in the state Engllsh developed no threat for the lndlvldual scormfr title but rather concentrated more on team play Cantamn Billy Whelan was SlXfh 1n Essex County lndivxdual scoring with forty four points and Bob Anasoulls was seventh Wlth forty three pomts The team was verv fine defensively also Through eleven games it held lts opponents to fifty three polnts thlI'tV two of whlch were scored against lt ln one of 1tS two defeats the Classlcal game on Thanksgiving The startlng l1ne on Thanksglvlng Day had Russ Dunn and Louie Tsloropoulos at the ends Bob Peterson and B1ll DF1SC011 tackles Chick Frangos and Dick Ashley guards and Charlie Pettigrew at center Other l1ne players who saw plenty of service throughout the season were John Daneluk Ken Remsen Lee Weaver Charlie Frangos Tony MIDI gell Mike Carr and Nick Jules The starting backfield had Dick Nardella at quarterback callmof signals Captaln B1lly Whelan at left half back Les Locke rlght half back and Bob Anasoulls at fullback Others vsho saw service in the backfield were Al Tangney Dick Cahill and Carl Messlnger Showlng fine team work these boys brought Eng11Sh 1tS finest football record ln years B1lly Whelan and B1ll Drlscoll were elected to the North Shore team for the All Star game with the Boston Suburban All Stars B1lly Whelan scored the North Shore team s third touch the greatest pass catches ever seen in Mann1ng Bowl The season s record Engllsh Engllsh English English English English Enghsh Engllsh English Engllsh English 12 RED AND GRAY Chelsea 0 Lowell 0 Salem 7 Lawrence 0 Beverly 0 Peabody 0 Saugus 14 Marblehead 0 Somerville 0 Revere 0 Classical 32 down with one of I . . . , . . . . . 1 n 5 . n 0 1, Z Y . . . n I .1 . in it K, . . . .
