Second Pnze Wmnmg Paper mn the Esther Hawkes Peace Contest GERALD GORDON 1950 Never before has the cry for freedom and peace been so umversally prevalent Th1s plea 1S surely Just1f1ed when 1t IS reallzed that th1s past half century has produced the most ru1nous and devastat1ng warfare 1n all hlstory Yet 1f an answer to the world s pl1ght1s forthcom1ng 1t must come from w1th1n the hearts of the people themselves It IS the1r solemn obl1gat1on to f1nd a means of preserv1ng the1r sacred herltage of llberty No matter what a sound formula must somehow be dev1sed to guard agamst future world w1de conflagrat1ons such as the wor ld has recently w1tnessed Nat1ons have learned to the1r d1smay that war never serves the purpose of settl1ng arguments Such settlements can only be brought about by peacefuul means ln treat1ng th1s sub1ect 1t lS necessary to outl1ne the present s1tuat1on and then to determ1ne llS relat1on to freedom and peace It IS common knowledge that the Un1ted States IS bemg faced w1th a d1ff1cult s1tuat1on 1n Europe today that IS commonly referred to as the cold war lt IS a s1tuat1on that must be handled w1th the .ttmost resourcefulness tact and dlplomacv The aggressor nat1on 1S attemptma to harass our country by the sly use of blockades and demonstrahons The Unlted States must show that 1t IS capable of standmg up to such act1on by not allowmg themselves to become unnecessarlly d1sturbed over th1s s1tuat1on Less powerful countr1es than v e look to our country to put an end to the encroachment upon the1r terr1tor1es by th1s trespasser It would not be w1se how ever for us to f1ght f1re Wllh f1re The only plauslble answer lS arbltratlon It lS only by the SIHCGTG co operat1on on the part of the part1es concerned that the European s1tuat1on w1ll be stralghtened out No agreements are assured but 1f a few concesslons are made the outcome should be a satlsfactory one for all concerned The way 1 l wh1ch the peace lov1ng nat1ons of the world can express the1r des1re for freedom and peace IS by the1r act1ons m the Umted Nat1ons wh1ch IS dlllgenlly try1ng to pro mote world peace by d1scuss1on and del1berat1on Although th1s oraan1zat1on 1Sl1f1'11led 1n 1lS powers by the lack of a World Army 1t lS domg a laudable lob 1n express1ng llS op1n1ons on 1mportant world matters Th1s league today serves as a foundatlon for better understandma between all nat1ons areat and small The world 1S fortunate that Georae Marshall possessed the melon 10 1111115119 Such Q worthwh1le pol1cy as the Marshall Plan lts beneflts have made the rehab1l1tat1on of d1sr1ossessed peoples and broken countrwes poss1ble by lend1ng the funds to 1mplement reconstructlon These countr1es W1ll eventually become self suff1c1ent to the polnt of lndependence Th1s mdependence 1S a v1tal factor for an aggressor seeks for ht v1ct1ms those weaker than he The Un1t Ci States must cont1nue to g1ve 1ts whole hearted support to th1s proaram Another essenttal factor 1n estobllghma peace lS the r1a1d control of sc1ent1f1c and terhnolomcal developments Although much has been SG1d about the necess1ty of malntamma strmaent standards for new atom1c weapons no method has yet been deused for the stab1l17at1on of such destructlve mstruments The br1ahtest hope 1n th1s matter IS the world control of atom1c WGCIDOTIS It 15 to be hoped that the I'1Cfl101'1S of the world w1ll soon reach on agreement regardmg all such development of atom1 weapons The most effeetwe method of Solvmo the problems of the worrled world would be the fusron of all nat1ons mto Q world government No doubt th1s statement sounds hrahly 1deal1st1c but l bel1eve that 1t coull be accompl1shed wlth the s1ncere co op eration of each 1nd1v1dual country There may yet come a t1me when such a unlon would be exped1ent Who can tell what dangers w1ll some day threaten us from other planets' There 1S no easy way of msurmg freedom and peace 1D th1s world The a com phshment comes Wlfh educat1on the knowledge that all men are brothers and deserve equal l1bert1es Freedom and pea come as the result of hard work pat1enc and lunsprudence People can only pray that the nat1ons of the world have suffered and learned enough from the past SXDGYISDCGS solemnly to declare that these error shcll not agaln occur lt IS wlth th1s knowledge that the peace lov1ng nat1ons of the earth go forth 1nto the future trushng and b l1ev1ng 1r1 a better tomorrow , , f I l 4 ' .
