When we returned to Classlcal 1n the all as Iumors we had a feelmg of secur1ty and sen1or1ty However we soon were deflated by the Semors They remmded us that we had to wa1t one more year for super1or1ty and that we were st1ll under thetr power Nevertheless we st1ll onsrdered oursleves above those unsoph1st1cated sopho mores Th1s year we found among us a few new faces as there were many transferees from other schools who reallzed what a grave mtstake they had been makmg IU not attendmg Class1cal We began the year by electtng as our class offlcers Presxdent Anthony Sol1m1ne VICG Pres1dent Donald Cheater and Secretary Betty Faus Agam we proved ourselves a most exemplary class We took an actlve part m all school GCl1V1l1eS The Gazette was fortunate enough to have the honor of publlshlng ome of our storles and poems and some of us were even on the permanent staff Those of us who took Spamsh d1scovered that we were under the tutelage of a new teacher new to us but not to Classlcal MISS MGTIOD O Keefe who had just returned from a delxghtful four year tmp to South Amerlca Llfe was made a b1t more compllcated by this event for we had only just learned to dlstmgulsh between the other two Mlsse O Keefe When we stepped Lnto the Pubhc Speakmg Room we found a new member of the faculty Mtss lanet Healey was the name of the newcomer and she was a very welcome add1t1on to our school Agaln we presented the Vartetxes thls t1me a b1gger and better show Wllh many of our classmates part1c1pat1ng ln th1s revlew a new type of entertamment was pre sented as Ceceha F1shman stepped to the stage f1ve mlnutes before the regular per formance and announced that the car wtth the number plate two four SIX e1ght zero was ln a dr1veway and asked the owner please to remove 1t The class of 50 wlfule st1ll Iumors felt that a bl1tz had come but when the exctte ment dled away we dlscovered that the confuslon had been caused only by the arrtval of Ioe McGhee From our class on the football team were hm Mullen Len Goodman and Fred Santangelo who contrxbuted conslderably to the1r successful season by throwxna the1r we1ght around on the txeld The cr1me of the year was the 1nvas1on of Room lU4 by Stella Sabanty who suc cessfully d1sgu1sed herself for one whole year as a Sen1or Th1s year too we showed our 1r11t1at1ve by holdmg an mformal tumor dance ln stead of the usual yumor prom And not all of us were frequent rec1p1ents of fallure notlces as thrrteen of our more mtelllgent students were 1n1t1ated 1nto the Natlonal Honor SOCIETY So enthuslastlc a class were we that at graduatlon t1me some members of our class won honors along w1th the Senlors Donald Cheater was awarded the Harvard Book for bemg selected the most outstandmg Iuruor Stephen Pannes rece1ved the Un1on College Book Award for excellence 1n athletlcs and scholast1c ab1lt1y Cla1reRamsdell rece1ved the class glft for the school Then the summer came and w nt and we were returnmg to Classlcal as mlghty Semors Proudly d1d we strut back 1n grand array that beautlful September morrung Ours was an attltude qulte d1ffere1'1t from that of two years ago We wer lust about start1ng to establlsh ourselves tn our kmgdom when Alasl on the thmrd day of school we awoke to the ry of The school burned down' And th1s IS no mere quotatton Much to our dlsmay we dlscovered that durlng the ntght a f1re had broken out tn the school and our assembly hall and the boys gymnastum were de stroyed Now 1ndeed the semor class was at a d1sadvantage For us no more stu dent assernbltes no more ralhes no more gym classes no more anythmg But we .. , , . f AS HIS T0 BX SELMA ZINKFINE 8 30 A M September 8 1947 and two hundred and forty ftve humble ftgures are slowly approachlng a huge tmposmg ed1'1ce located on North Common Street Thls group IS the class of 1950 when ftrst rt gazed atClass1calH1gh School Lost to these poor ch1ldren ts the beauty of the autumn day as they ftle 1nto ltne w1th apprehenstve hearts to see to what home room they would be asstgned Once 1ns1de the bulldmg tn a frantlc search for rooms they see among them those br1l11ant upper classmen tthat you ftnd 1n almost every 1nst1tut1on of learmngl havmg no trouble at all as they chat ga1ly through the corrldors completely lgnortng these frustrated newcomers How ever much to our SUFPIISS we were soon adjusted and had no trouble tn f1nd1ng our way around the bLl1ld11'1QS except for the fact that 1t took us a year to understand that the A after certaln room numbers rndtcated the Annex At once we became aware of the many act1v1t1es that took place at Classxcal Smce we had asptrattons of bemg an actrve class we ele ted three of our rrost competent lassmate as offtcers The prestdent was Anthony Soltmme our v1ce presldent was Wtl ham Connelly our secretary was Wtrufred Burger Th1s group a1ded by our adv1ser Mr MCGIHHIS took over the management of our affatrs And we d1d prove ourselves Northy ln the dramattcs department we had the good fortune of be1ng able to parttctpate rn Peter Pan presented by the comb1ned efforts of Class1cal and Enghsh Although the Iunlors and Semors had the mayor parts 1n thts play we also had two of our own Thesptans 1111 Roland and Betty Faus gave excellent performances as the Lost Boys and strangely enough these two 1nd1v1dua1s havent yet found themselves Also we were a part of someth1ng new at Classlcal the mtroduchon of the Classtcal Var1et1es tn whlch every talented member of the school had an opportunity to perform before the publtc Here too the Sophomore class was shown to be full of talent Nor tn the held of sports d1d we go unrecognlzed as our own Lou Pollack devel oped mto one of the most promlsmg members of a great baseball team To our number was added that dtsttngutshed ball player lohn Carter who came tn search of a fem1n1ne plt her Of course we d1d not go through one whole year at Class1cal w1thout be1ng edu cated We learned the meamng of such terms as detent1on sktp a per1od meet you at Sams and many other s1m1lar expressrons but durlng thls entlre year w never d1d comprehend the profound mean1ng of See you 1n 104 second pertodl As we were just becommg adlusted to thts new school and learnlng the names of all the teachers the summer came and we departed for our vacatlon f9Gl1Z1I'lQ that we really had enjoyed our hrst year at Classxcal 1. 644154 5 X S Mt 1 flu t X T V5 thirteen

were not dxscouraged On the contrary we lmmedlately organlzed and selected for our offlcers Pres1dent Donald Cheater Vrce Pres1dent Anthony Sohmme and Secretary Betty Faus For our assemblxes we enllsted the a1d of the Clly We were allowed to use the mag n1f1cent Clty Hall Aud1tor1um where we presented four assemblles The gymnaslum was soon repalred and there we held our school dances Our football team captamed by Fred Santangelo was one of the best Much of 1ts success can be attnbuted to the mauguratron of glrl cheerleaders who were of course selected by the volume 1n thelr vorces To us also came the honor of contrlbutlng to the flrst hockey team at Classtcal whlch was under the able coachlng of Mr Frlar The captaln of the team was Francrs Donahue Thts year the Gazette had a most successful year w1th Anthony Sol1m1ne the world s worst wretch as ed1tor Never before d1d the magazlne have so many new fea tures and 1nterest1ng stones Agaln the class of 50 was a part of somethxng new at Class1cal For the fxrst tlme a Drama Festwal was presented by the school Each class selected a one act play Our class put on The Val1ant one of the most 1nsp1r1ng plays ever wrltten Our semor drama Llttle Women turned out to be one of the frnest ever presented by Classtcal ln fact 1t was pronounced the worlds best play by that d1st1ngu1shed dramat1c cr1t1c E11 Mavros whose presenc 1n the audrence caused the cast to outdo themselves The Usherettes were part1cularly effectlve thls year as they appeared at the Chrlst to the consc1ent1ous work of the competent and able off1cers L1l11an McCarthy PTGSI dent and Adela Rampuh Captaln The pr1ze of the year for clever lnventlons came to our class only just recently when a few courageous sp1r1ts mtroduced the water plstol an unavoxdable torture to every senlor g1rl At mldyear the Year Book staff was organrzed wlth Henry Mosychuk as cha1rman Llttle d1d he know what he was gettlng 1nto when he accepted th1s pos1t1on But he managed of course w1th the help of p1cture cha1rmen Wrtteup cha1rmen rewrlte chair men boss cha1rmen answer the telephone cha1rmen and a few others One day toward the close of the year our usually casually attlred class appeared ln the unaccustomed splendor that mxght be found ln Vogue or m Hart Schaifner and Marx adds Leadmg the assemblage were Ken McDonald Don Cheater and Sully Sol1rn1ne The occaslon for th1s unusual event was the takmg of the class p1cture As the h1story of the class unfolded we became aware of an unusually l1vely group 1n our mxdst our n1mble and charmmg secretanes who tapped out all our not1ces and our class prophec1es To be sure m thxs task they were browbeaten by a slave dr1ver L1l11an McCarthy As p1ctures began to be exchang d and college acceptances were belna rece1ved we reluctantly real1zed that our hlgh school days were com1ng to a close Never w1ll we forget those many happy moments that we had at Classlcal espec1ally around the fountam of love on the second floor Feellng pfty for our underprlvllged predecessors who never knew the Joy of drama festwals Vanety shows c1ty hall a sembhes g1rl cheerleaders hockey teams and Junlor dances and envylng our lucky successors who w1ll take part rn the Gazette the plays the Year Book and all the other del1ghtful act1v1t1es we take leave of Classr cal and b1d farewell to our wonderful teachers and devoted classmates whom we shall never forget To Mr Buckley too as we say thls farewell we w1sh to express our apprecl at1on and thanks for the attentton and thought he has g1ven to the problems of our class on-1 B, - J , Mus ,.
