Board Of Trustees Vermont State Colleges 18 Dedication VIRGINIA WALSH JARDINE Friend of the College and for ten years its Librarian, Virginia Jardine contributed unselfishly of her talents and energies to make the Library a pleasant and rewarding place of work and leisure. Through her invariably cordial relationships with her faculty colleagues, she encouraged their involve- ment in the growth of the book collection and the enhancement of its quality. She saw the Library through lean years of inadequate space and pitifully small book budgets to its removal into splendid new quarters with an assured rate of rapid growth. In it all, she showed an attractiveness of personality and refinement of character which endeared her to students, faculty, and staff. It was not alone the College which benefited from the grace and charm of this unassuming great lady, but the community at large. It knew the devotion and self sacrifice of Virginia Jardine in Church work. Girl Scouts, and a host of unheralded contributions toward community betterment. She will long be missed, on the Hill as in the town. 20 ROBERT E. LONG President Lyndon State College President’s Message No member of the Class of 1967 can have escaped an almost overwhelming feel- ing of change as he compares the College he entered with the College from which he graduates. In this he is no different from the graduates of any College that is alive and growing, nor indeed from Lyndon graduates who have preceded him in recent years or will follow him down through the 60’s and 70’s. Yet for this par- ticular class the change is probably more impressive—and perhaps more poignant— than for others. Since September 1963 a new group of buildings has risen across the road from Vail Hall, and more are under construction. The internal arrangements of the Vail Complex have been altered and more dramatic changes are in prospect. The ladies who in 1963 claimed Vail as home now live in Wheelock, and the less beau- tiful part of the undergraduate body roam freely through what was formerly a no- man’s land. A converted manure-cellar has been reconverted from the college dining hall to science labs and a rudimentary student center replaces what was bookstore, post-office, laundry, and classrooms. A cramped library has moved to spacious quarters, bequeathing its former location to an expanded bookstore. Administrative offices have moved about in an endless succession of apparently meaningless changes. More important, the academic programs which culminate in the 1967 degree are stronger and more adaptable to individual needs than those which produced earlier degrees. New opportunities have become available and new resources have been drawn upon to make possible a richer college experience. The students themselves have changed—in numbers, in quality, in character. Only in teaching and administrative personnel has there been relative stability, and even here there have been added re- freshing new personalities and significant new responsibilities. Change can be a disturbing thing, particularly to seniors who contemplate it through a nostalgic haze. But it is also vital, absolutely necessary to a living institution. While to none of us is given the wisdom which will ensure that all change is good, I am persuaded that the changes the Class of 1967 has seen in its four years here will appear on balance to have been for the good of the College and its graduates, in 1967 or any other year. To the Class of 1967 change should appear especially good, for this class has been an integral and important part of progress. There can be little doubt that you graduate stronger and better prepared. Something is always lost through change. Whatever may have been lost here— intimate size, old dormitory spaces, the ''atmosphere” of a crowded dining hall, drafty classrooms—I trust that pride of institution has not been sacrificed. If you can look about you as you graduate and say I’m glad I went to Lyndon!”—and mean it— then change has not been in vain. The faculty and staff of your College cherish the hope that this may be so and extend the most cordial wishes for your success and happiness. ROBERT T. RICKERT B.A. University of Minnesota; M.A. University of Miami; Ph.D. University of Birmingham (England) 22 Director Of Student Personnel WILLIAM B. DAVIS B.A. Wesleyan University B.D. Andover Newton Theo- logical School Student Personnel Sendees derive from the fact that college students have bodies and emotions as well as minds. Students are not only learning machines : they are also people. Some- how an environment has to be created and maintained in which these people can pursue their intellectual ends with a minimum of inter- ference from bodily and emotional demands. The Director of Student Personnel at Lyndon, who is responsible directly to the President, is concerned to maintain such an environment. His duties include the admission of new students and the placement of graduates; such student welfare matters as health services, housing fa- cilities, and counselling; student activities and government; student financial aid; and relations with parents, police, clergymen, merchants, and other off-campus persons with whom students have occasional dealings. In general, the Director broods over the student's out-of-classroom life. 23 t- Business Manager ROBERT B. MICHAUD B.S. St. Michael's College 24 Librarian DANIEL G. CLARK D.A. Edinburgh College of Art; B.S. Teachers College, Columbia University; M.L.S. Graduate School of Library Service, Rutgers the State University ROBERTA SIMMONS Assistant Librarian FACULTY As you leave Lyndon you take with you certain mementos of your college experiences. Among these arc your Bachelor of Science degree certified by the Board of Vermont State Colleges; a transcript of your grades certified by the Dean of the College; and a cumulative point average determined by the Recorder and verified by the Academic Standards Committee. The most sig- nificant memento, however, is neither of these. Rather it is the knowledge you have acquired in your years at Lyndon—through your course work, in the library, and from the extra-curricular functions. A college faculty has pretensions in believing that they were principally re- sponsible for this acquisition of knowledge. In this respect, the faculty at Lyndon is no different than any other. Furthermore, we hope that you have learned not only the facts and techniques that make up so much of your education—we hope that you have also de- veloped the wisdom to apply your education in your future lives. And we hope that by our examples, in- adequate though at times they may have been, we have instilled in you a moral commitment to educate others. 28 PETER M. BROWN, Chairman B.Mus.
