V erlyn 1965 Lyndon State College Lyndon Center, Vermont CONTENTS Title Page Contents Dedication President's Message Dean's Message Board of Trustees Faculty Staff Seniors Classes Organizations Sports Activities Directory Dedication We, the graduating class of 1965, dedicate to you, Grahm S. Newell, our Verlyn as a token of our sincere appreciation for the part you have played in our education. 3 Dr. Robert E. Long, President For all that has been ii —Thanks! To all that shall be -Yes! Dag Hammarskjold wrote these words at the onset of 1953, the year in which he was to be named Secretary General of the United Nations. They not only provide an insight to the character of the man, but an inspiration to the innate character of all men. You members of the class of 1965, with whom I have happily worked for four years, could well take this to heart. I for one, am thankful for the association with you. And with you I face your futures with a resounding affirma- tion of confidence, hoping that each of you will hear that call, without which your professional lives will be less than complete, and that each of you will go forward in the assurance that society has need for your service. The good wishes of your College go forward with you. 4 Dr. Kenneth T. Stringer Dean of Instruction Director of Student Personnel Lyndon Teachers College became Lyndon State College in 1962. There was no obvious physical change. Gradually the college has been changing its perspectives and programs. In 1963 the first physical changes began with the erection of new buildings and renovations of old buildings. The graduating class of 1965 has shown a few outward changes. The greatest changes of intellect and of mental maturity can not be seen. It is my hope that these changes will continue throughout life. 5 Vermont State Colleges’ Board of Trustees FIRST ROW: George Van Santvoord, vice-chairman; H. Ward Bedford, chairman; Richard W. Its basic and most practical goal is to teach skiing and from the nucleus of its members it forms its ski team which participates in inter- collegiate ski meets. Within its framework it has its own instructors as well as bringing guest ski instructors to campus from different ski areas in northern New England. It frequently incorporates ski weekends and aids in the Winter Carnival ski festivities with its rope tow. 50 PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPECIALISTS CLUB ROW It P. Gojielin, S. Adams, A. The main purpose of this club is to stimulate and main- tain a broad and intelligent interest in Physical Education. Another major purpose of the club is to improve the professional attitude of Physical Education students towards the department as well as the profession. One of the club's major jobs is to maintain contact with past club members and to keep these members informed on the functions that are now going on in the club. Every year the club sends some of its members to the National Physical Education Assemblies. In past years these assemblies have been held in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Atlantic City. This year we will be sending some members to the national as- sembly in New York City. 51 NEWMAN CLUB' ROW 1: Susan Toohey, Mary Hood, Shirley Memolo, Mary Finley, Nancy Bigelow, Marie, Gustamachio, Jo Stsgnitfo, Paulette Gossetin ROW 2: Frank Servidio, Barbara LaBounty, Carolyn Markey, Mary Lonergan, Gene Holzwarth, Robert Goudreau, Joan Pond, Claire Messier ROW 3: William Vargas, Cathy O'Brien, Maura Kehoe, Vincent Gangone, Dennis Looney, Kenneth Zeno, Richard Wcrchenski, Terry Vincent CAMPUS CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT ROW 1: Judi Kamens, Obed Onwuegbu, Marjorie Kahn ROW 2: Marjorie Streeter, Rebrecca Brecky, Rosalyn Archer 52 K A t LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Hornets had a record of eight wins and six losses under the fine leadership of Coach Mr. C. Roys. Although the squad was inexperienced due to the loss of many of its better men, they played heads-up hustle baseball providing many thrilling moments of excitement. A prominent crop of talented freshmen added to this year's battermen will make baseball the sport to watch during this spring at L.S.C. 57 MEN'S SOCCER R. Hickin, F. Jaquith, K. Zeno, D. Daly. Mr. Bell, W. Ashley, J. Wilson, S. Metz, R. Werchenski, P. Heath, J. Slack, R. Canns, W. Stevens, R. Cartce, V. Gangone, G. Wright. The men's soccer team, under the direction of coach Dudley Bell, had a record of four wins, seven losses, and one tie. The nucleus of this year's Hornets included many inexperienced fresh- men working with only a few of the seasoned veterans. Despite a tough schedule and injuries to key ball players, the Hornets represented themselves very well and displayed promise for a successful campaign next year. 58 MEN'S BASKETBALL ROW 1: K. Sonville, R. Cartec, A. Jaffc ROW 2: Coach Bell, W. Simpson, J. Dawson, F. Spear, V. Gangonc This year's basketball team was composed of some veteran mem- bers and others who were lacking in Coach Bell's special training. Even with a squad with varied experience and other handicaps, they came up with a better record than was anticipated. Most of us should be pleased with the performance and record which was displayed. 59 ■■ ROW 1: M. Monroe, J. Dawson, Mr. Bell (coach), W. Simpson, W. Ashley ROW 2: W. Stevens, D. Middleton, D. Daly ROW 3: G. Wright The Lyndon State College track and field team proved victorious for a fourth straight season in the N.E.S.C.A.C. championships which were held in Providence, R.l. At the N.A.I.A. held in New Britain, Conn., Lyndon again placed third. A trip to Annapolis proved to be a beneficial part of the success which the team made. Lyndon State can be extremely proud of its track and field stars since several records were broken. Track and Field 60 61 GIRL'S SOFTBALL J. Mosman, $. Ziemba. S. Adarm, P. McGrath, J. Stagnitto, M. Hood, A. Martel, P. Meredith, N. LaBounty, C. Baumann, B. Maxwell The girl's softball team, coached by Michael Baz: and Thomas Bouchard, had a limited but successful season. The exciting play of the girls indicated the spirit and desire which is always present in girls' athletics at L.S.C. With the addition of new freshmen to this year's future campaign added to its group of skilled returnees, we are looking forward to a very successful spring. This year's girls' soccer team under coach Jean Warden had a successful year winning three, tieing three, and losing only one. Despite the loss of many of last year's players by graduation, the team worked extra hard with the arrival of many new-coming freshmen along with its nucleus of experienced veterans. Their style of play was very exciting and rewarding as shown in the team's record. GIRLS' SOCCER J. Mosman, E. Sturges, S. Adams, P. McGrath, M. Staubach, B. Isaac, S. Toohey, J. Warden, A. Martel, P. Meredith, M. Sanders, C. Messier, N. LaBounty, R. Cochran 62 ACTIVITIES The freshmen busily prepare the commencement breakfast, which is an annual event. 64 Sometimes the freshmen need a little upperclassmen help. Faculty as well as students await a bright morn- ing breakfast. Faculty enjoy a good hearty breakfast prepared by the students. Seniors hear their last words of encouragement. Remember When? THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS The freshman thought it would never end, but remem- ber freshmen, next year you'll have the chance to make others bear the burden. 66 Christmas at Lyndon Faculty and their families enjoy the de- licious meal prepared by Marshall and his staff. 67 Winter Carnival ■4 “Queen” Pat Meredith 1965 “King” Terry Floyd 1966 68 The new King and Queen are crowned The old and the new. 69 Despite the cold weather, the students vigorously took part in all the winter carnival events.
