VerlyH — 1962 i Cyndon Center, Vermont The persistent march of fifty years has shown the gradual evolution of our insti- tution of higher learning. When one looks at the material advancement of the college, it is possible to graphically ob- serve the growth of our alma mater. From its birth in a Lyndon Institute build- ing at the foot of the hill to Vail Manor at the top of the hill and on to the pro- posed centralization at Darling Mansion on the Burklyn Campus, the physical plant of the college has moved to higher levels. Paralleling this has been the ex- pansion of the college curriculum from a two-year normal school program to a four-year teacher training institution and the introduction of a liberal arts program. The history of the past year as depicted within these covers represents but one chapter in the never ceasing march of time bringing its inevitable changes. May our alma mater continue to grow and move ever upward in its quest for aca- demic and intellectual achievement. 2 Contents TITI F PAOF 1 CLASSES 13 FOREWORD 2 ORGANIZATIONS—ACTIVITIES 29 rOMTFNT 3 ATHLETICS 45 DFDICATinN 4 INFORMALS 55 PPFSIDFNTS AAF AOF 5 DIRECTORY 67 FACULTY AND STAFF 7 library LYNDON STATE COLLEGE LYNDONVILLE, VERMONT 3 Dedication We, the class of '62, of Lyndon Teachers College are proud to dedi- cate this year's Verlyn to our fellow stu- dents who interrupted their studies to serve our country in the armed forces during a national emergency. Their service to our nation in its endeavor to achieve world peace and freedom makes them worthy of commendation. We anticipate their speedy return to the school to resume their studies. It is with great pleasure and pride that we dedicate this '62 Verlyn to them. 4 President's Message In the family of colleges a fifty-year old institution is still a youngster. This year we turned fifty. From 1961, we can look back at a somewhat humble origin, a satisfying childhood, a brash and strident period of adolescent growth, and, as we move into maturity, a stable period in which we soberly contemplate our future. With pride we can reflect upon services rendered by faculty and staff in producing graduates who have been a credit to us, teachers for our own area and for the whole state. Yet we are still young; young enough to dream, young enough to plan, young enough to achieve. It is in a spirit of progress and adventure that we face our second half century of service. 5 Dr. Robert E. Long faculty and Staff Dear Seniors: Graduation from college constitutes a milestone in your search for success in life which is made up of many variables. I congratulate you and others who have made this step possi- ble. As you realize, it is only the beginning, but it should provide sufficient assurance and motivation for you not to be content with anything but that which challenges your best. Many vistas should have been opened to you. I urge you to open them wider by going into further educational pursuits and to avail yourselves of every opportunity which you can make possible. Regardless what your vocation or profession may be even- tually, strive to do the very best job of which you are capable. Your achievement will be the result of what efforts you make to bring it about. And in the realization, remember that some- one is always influenced by your efforts and by your ex- ample. I admonish you to enter every open door which gives an opportunity for advancement and for service. God has given you an opportunity to help others, and in this mission you should always let your light so shine that you may bring forth an abundant harvest. May our Father's blessings ever sustain and guide you in all endeavors. Fraternally yours, J. D. Messick, Dean Seniors: My congratulations to you. It might be said that you have reached a milestone in becoming an edu- cated person. Whether or not this is so depends upon the real mean- ing your education has had for you and the use to which it is put for the common good. Susan C. Gallagher, Director of Student Personnel 8 MR. A. Throughout the school year, the Newman Club sponsors and assists in carrying out various beneficial projects for the college, local community, and the underprivileged. ROBERT SULLIVAN MR. JOHN MESSICK President Advisers The Campus Faith Organization open to all students holds among its ideals and purposes the pro- moting of fellowship and under- standing, duty and respect to all humanity with love, tolerance, justice, benevolence, and peace for all mankind. As a means of carrying on these purposes, the group has held religious discussion groups, Christmas activities for the school and community, plus some ser- vice activities each month. The group has purchased the New English Translation of the Bible for the library. 45 Athletics Mkletic Associations Council Students wishing to participate in intercollegiate and intramural sports on campus belong to the Women's Athletic Association and the Men's Athletic Association. It is the duty of these two executive councils to draw up and control their organizations' budgets. It is also the duty of the WAA to arrange the annual Winter Carnival and the Athletic Banquet. This record gave the team a fourth place position in the conference standings. The team's captain was Royce Pete Pinard, a member of this year's graduating class. FRONT ROW: G. Cahill, M. Brown, J. Women’s Soccer Fourteen girls turned out to play soccer this fall. The women's soccer team had a limited sea- son this year with only a two game schedule. Coach Ray Grout's Hornettes lost both of these games. Despite the lack of games played, the girls looked good and worked hard. PAT BAUMANN BETTIE JONES JAN CUMMINGS LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Cartce, G. Spooner, L. Duffy, Coach Drew, G. Girard, T. Tucker, V. Ste. Marie. Missing from lineup—R. Walker, R. Pinard, R. Mainati, L. Ramsdell. Basketball Paced by the all round team play of seniors and co-captains. Tucker and Pinard, Lyndon com- piled a nine win and twelve loss record. With the addition of two new students, Girard and Ste. Marie at semester break, and replacements from the intramural league, Coach Drew's quintet finally snapped a nine game losing streak with two closing season victories during Winter Car- nival Weekend. The squad that finished the season was without doubt one of the smoothest working outfits to represent the college in many a year. Out-heighted and out-manned but never out-fought would best describe Lyndon's contribution to basketball for 1961-62. LARRY DUFFY TOMMY TUCKER BOB WALKER FRONT ROW: G. Cahill, J. McNally, B. Women’s basketball Sixteen young women turned out to play in the intercollegiate basketball program. This year's team in a rebuilding process, is made up primarily of freshman girls. The girls have a serious in- terest in the game and each is contributing her support to the other. The future should see many more fine women's basketball teams at Lyndon. In the outfield Ray Grout, 520 and Gary Spooner, 409 re- turned; hold-overs in the infield were Bob Malnati, 440, and John Storti, 304. In the catching department Ed Brehaut, 286, and Robert Murray, 200, were back behind the plate. A rough schedule of 16 games faced the squad with the Spring trip to Washington, D.C., as the highlight of the season. BOB MALNATI Leading Infielder FRONT ROW: R. Skinner, B. Jones, S. Although'a great deal of time was spent practicing, not many games were played. Most of the games were played in intramural contests. However, the two games that the Hornettes did play in the '61 season were victories. More competition with other colleges was anticipated for the '62 season. JOANNE MARDEN MARG BROWN RUTH SKINNER LEFT TO RIGHT: R. Simpson, M. Buzzi, J. Geo, R. Heath, C. Metcalf. Zrack and Tield The first track and field team in LTC's history was founded an successfully built up by Coach Dudley S. Bell in 1960. The team proved a worthy college representative in the '60 meets. They surprised many of the larger colleges in southern New England by placing third in the New England Teachers College Athletic Association Meet held at New Haven, Connecticut. There LTC's Jim Gee set a New England shot put record. The '61 team defeated Castleton and accomplished a near win with the U.V.M. Freshmen. The '61 track season was sub-climaxed by the team's winning of the NETCIM Meet which took place at Fitchburg, Mass. The year was climaxed by the winning of the NECSAC trophy at Bridgewater, Connecticut. JIM GEE NECSAC Trophy Shot Put and Discus Thrower ROBERT HEATH Team High Scorer LEFT TO RIGHT: S.
