LIBRARY LYNDON STATE COLLEGE LYNDONVILLE. VERMONT Verlyn — 1961 Foreword Sifting through the sands of time, education surges upward as a volcano. Infinitesimal heights subside and en- compass each little grain only to create stirrings of intellectual curiosity and probing. We rise above mere existence and revel in our funds of knowledge, pouring forth to all who can survive the molten flood the benefits of man- kind. The seeds of sand will spread only as the world spreads; but, the omni- present volcano must follow the earthen path of wisdom. Contents Title Page Foreword Contents Dedication In Appreciation President’s Message Faculty — Staff Classes Organizations — Activities Sports Seniors Directory 1961 Verlyn Dedicated MOTHER IZELLA WISHART The Senior Class of LTC proudly bestows its honor upon our beloved housemother who is affectionately known as “Mother.” Mother Wis- hart has served not only in her official capacity but also that of parent, seamstress, a loyal supporter of this institution, and many other volun- teer services. Her cheerful disposition and smiling face will long be remembered by her many friends and all of her “sons and daughters' at LTC. 4 Appreciation is a small word when referring to one so deeply loved by the LTC student body as “Mother Renfrew. She is held in great esteem among us, and our hearts will always hold a place for her. A kind word, a loving hand, and a keen ear for troubles were her outstanding characteristics. Our hopes and prayers will always go with her. May God grant her eternal bliss. Genuinely devoted to I.TC, “Father Renfrew put forth much energy be- yond expectations. No task for a student was too great to attempt. He is en- deared to many for his devotion and unfaltering care of us. He remains a living symbol of all great in a man. A more perfect couple could not be found for Lyndon’s parents. Together they have served in the highest capacity—that of Mother and Father to all who knew them. Their spirit will linger for years to come in the hearts of their many dear friends as a couple graced by the hands of God. 5 OR. ROBERT E. LONG, President Or. Lon came to LTC as a green frosh in 1959 and now has assumed his role as the helmsman of our great ship. He received his A.B. in 1936, his A.M. in 1938, and his Ph.O. from Yale University in 1912. TO THE CLASS OF 1961: It is to be expected that one who is engaged, even administratively, in an educational endeavor would think highly of the profession of teacher. You will not be surprised to have me warmly commend your choice of profession. As neophytes, with “beginning competence,” you still have much to learn—indeed, you must never stop learning if you are to be successful educators. Teaching will demand much of you and will have its full measure of heartache and disappointment. Yet it will also be the most rewarding of endeavors, no matter at what level of the vast educational enterprise you may work. I salute you as members of a new generation of teachers, happy in the assurance that you may confidently expect greater recognition, greater material reward, and greater satis- factions than it has been the lot of any previous group of graduates to receive. Our affectionate good wishes go with you. 6 from Vail Campus 7 Dean- J. D. MESSICK You seniors are a great group. In the short time I have known you, I have come to ap- preciate your varied abilities, high aspirations, splendid personalities, and civic outlook. The foundation you have been laying provides a basis upon which you can build a super-structure of achievement which will come only as you exert tremendous effort to accomplish any worthwhile task in a satisfactory manner. Success does not come easily, and don’t expect your upward climb to be without handicap, hard- ship, and disappointment. Blue steel is not pro- duced without white heat, and this you must recognize in giving of your best. May God’s richest blessing attend your every effort in attaining the zenith of your potentiality. S. C. GALLAGHER To the class of 1961—My best wishes go with each of you. We have come to know each other well during these last four years. It is hoped that the acceptance of individuals and the respect for human dignity which we stressed here will be a part of your operating philosophy in whatever tasks you may per- form. While the staff is composed primarily of seniors, appreciation is extended to all underclassmen who put forth their endeavors into this publication. The Taylor Publishing Company of Dallas. Texas, has been an invaluable aid in the development and publishing of this year’s Verlyn. Lyn News The Lyn News is the student organization charged with the re- sponsibility of reporting, informing, and recording through the medium of newsprint, the events and happenings on the LTC campus. The main purpose of The Lyn News is to present reliable information and pertinent articles for the reading enjoyment of those directly concerned with LTC. Its importance in the field of public relations is apparent when it is known that on its mailing list are all Vermont high schools, state newspapers and many colleges throughout the east. To further the advancement of student journalism. The Lyn News sponsors the annual scholastic press conference for high schools and colleges throughout the state. Active members of The Lyn News have the opportunity to improve their writing skill, and to participate in the composition of a student newspaper, a primary asset to any college campus. They easily conquered Keene in the first game but lost to a strong Johnson eleven. Lyndon defeated Farmington and North Adams, then came up with their best effort of the year, ticing the heavily favored Springfield College J.V. During the second half of the season LTC ran into a scoring problem. They were unable to capitalize on frequent scoring opportunities throughout the remaining games. This resulted in the loss of four of their last five contests, though yielding but eight scores to the opposition during these games. Lyndon should be proud of their excellent defensive record. Teams that give up an average of just over one goal per game usually complete highly successful seasons. With the addition of some degree of scoring potential, next season should definitely be a big year for the Hornet booters. 48 Women’s Soccer Lyndon Hornettes under Coach Royce Pinard finished the season undefeated. Two games with Bishops and one with Johnson Teachers was the extent of our schedule. Due to rain, other games were cancelled. Missing from the line-up next year will he three seniors. The student body supported them by contributing money for the trip, which again shows excellent school spirit. 52 Women’s Basketball Women’s basketball at this institution is on an intercollegiate and intramural basis. The Hornettes earned an intercollegiate record this year of six wins to one loss. Although the women will still have a fine team, the loss of their three seniors. Juana Schoff. Priscilla May, and Beth Wood, will be felt in the ensuing year. Campus spirit is high for the young women. There arc fourteen participants in the program, and each is contributing his supj ort to the other. They have a serious interest in the game and make Lyndon proud of their fine record. BACK ROW: S. State Teachers College in which John Wells pitched a no hitter. Seniors graduating this year (1961) will be: Richard Jarvis, and Henry Huntington. 54 Track and Field The first track team in LTC history was formed in 1960 and proved a very suc- cessful college representative. Coach Bell built the team up while working under far from ideal conditions. Well over a dozen men turned out for early season workouts and only through hard work and determination did they succeed. Lyndon ran over rival Castlcton in the first meet for both schools, by a convincing margin. They lost a close dual meet to the undefeated, powerful UVM freshmen. The Hornets closed their season by surprising many of the larger colleges in southern New England and by placing third in the New Englands, held at New Haven, Connecti- cut. There. LTC’s Jim Gee set a New England shot put record. BACK ROW: E. Hazard, J. Gee, Mr. Bell, coach, D. White, R. Heath, E. Rhodes: FRONT ROW: M. Comstock. G. Hopkins, R. Simpson, J. Peters, D. However, the women proved equally effective in a winning contest with LI. It is the hope of the women this year to be able to play four or five games with other colleges. Graduating this year will be three seniors who have played on the soft- ball team for four years. They are: Priscilla May, catcher; Juana Schoff, pitcher and first baseman: and shortstop Beth Wood. 56 Team Captains Senior Officers at Vail Campus 59 NORMA ANNE AINSWORTH Walden, Vermont Danville High School Danville, Vermont Verlyn 4; Lyn News 1; Co-op 1-4; CFO 1; Glee Club 1-3; WAA 1, 2 PHILIP A.
