VERLYN I960 LYNDON TEACHERS COLLEGE Lyndon Center, Vermont To the stars through difficulties. The fountain of collegiate youth burst forth into a new galaxy. Through seemingly insur- mountable difficulties, problems, and infinite periods of inexplicable happiness, the Soul of the graduates shoots out to conquer new horizons. Reaching the end of the journey to the stars constitutes only the beginning of an- other excursion towards a more distant spiral of nebula. Education moves forward through the stars. We move forward: Forward Ever, Backward Never! 2 FORWARD FORWARD - U- tolCAUON '-memorial ADMINISTRATION - CtASSES ' ORGANIZATIONS ' SPORTS. ACTIVITIES -•Assa v. r DEDICATION It is with endless thanks for the hard work given to Lyndon, and for the friendship that he gave to all students that knew him, and for the help he gave to everyone, that this edition of Verlyn is dedicated to our past president, Mr. Arthur Elliott. 4 IN MEMORIAM We, the friends of Sharon Maureen Cole remember her as a person with many talents and abilities. We all have our own memories of Sherry. However, we associate Sherry with sincerity, thoughtfulness, and understanding of others. These qualities in addition to her personality and her ability to make and keep friends will never be forgotten by her classmates of 1960. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ■To the class of I960: You leave Lyndon at a time when education is being subject- ed to close and sometimes un- sympathetic scrutiny, and your performance as teachers will be in the spotlight. But this does not worry me—neither should it worry you. For we share the con- fidence that you have been well prepared for your profession and that you have a solid claim to being educated men and women. Remember always that the quality of a school depends not upon its size nor upon the lavish- ness of its equipment, but upon the quality of the teaching that takes place in it. You have it in your hands to ensure this quality. I wish you all possible success, as well as the realization of the most lasting satisfaction in this greatest of professions. DR. R. LONG DEAN MARS Civilization has been accused of mad- ly racing to know more and more about less and less until it knows everything about nothing. With man about to enter the Space Age, it appears to the ordinary citizen as if this is really true. It remains for you — today's graduates, tomorrow's teachers — to instill in our youth a real enthusiasm for life. Your task is to build an understanding, appreciation and con- cern for the great and tremendous chal- lenge which is the heritage of today's children. I trust that you will perform your duty with conviction and courage. MRS. GALLAGHER Another group of teachers from Lyn- don is prepared to join those already in the profession. Each of you, as a neo- phite, is aware that his training is a foundation which grows in strength and depth with experience. We at Lyndon are proud of our grad- uates. The standards of modern teaching which they maintain are recognized throughout the state of Vermont as evi- dence by the demands made for them from far and near. We trust that you will add to the growth of good teaching and of responsible citizenship. V JU MATH AND SCIENCE Mr. Crocker, Mr. Stockwoll, Mr. Miller FACULTY PHYSICAL ED ENGLISH Mr. Bell, Mr. Drew Mrs. Bisson, Mrs. Bicrlmaier EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY Mrs. Wentzcll, Miss Bussell, Mrs. Stockwell FACULTY SOCIAL STUDIES MUSIC AND ART Mr. Marabclla, Mr. Newell Mr. Christophersen, Mr. McGowan FORD FOUNDATION OFFICE Mrs. Sybil Endcrly Miss Nancy Moore Mrs. Margaret Stevens The Educational Resources Project sponsored by the Ford Foundation completes its third and final year of operation at Lyndon this June. The purpose of the Project as outlined in the grant from the Foundation was to assist schools in which there existed a shortage of trained per- sonnel, and where classes are too large for the teacher to manage effectively. In addition to the expressed purposes, the Project has performed other functions, viz; students who have partici- pated in the Project have sensed a personal en- richment from their work. Mr. Wctnzcll LIBRARY The college library contains approximately 12,000 bound volumes, subscribes to 66 periodicals and all of the Vermont newspa- pers as well as leading national ones. The Lyndon Teachers College Glee Club is a growing organization which has always extended a big welcome to all students who show a desire to sing. At the regular sessions the members of the chorus share an enjoyable but worthwhile hour as they work together preparing for their future performances. These performances have included the annual Christmas Concert and Spring Musical. The success resulting from the perform- ance of Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific in 1958 made it necessary to move the perform- ance of Oklahoma in 1959 from Bole Hall to the Lyndonville Graded School auditorium. Both musi- cals were sold out days before the perform- ance. BACK ROW: J. Calhoun, J. Warden, J. Cummings, A. Boulrissc, I. Shiapcr. THIRD ROW: D. Gould, J. Marceau, B. Jones, M. Courser, S. Currier. This student run organization has served the college well by re- porting the news in a factual way, keeping the students informed of things to come, and publishing the opinion to the students of the college. The Lyn News also takes upon itself the task of planning and sponsoring the annual Press Conference which brings hundreds of high school students to the campus each fall. 28 The Verlyn is the college yearbook. It is with the combined ef- forts of many people, stu- dents and faculty, that the yearbook is published. HALLOWEEN DANCE After spending a month and a half getting use to the way of life found on the LTC campus, the Freshmen made their debut on the social calendar by sponsoring the Annual Halloween Dance. Using Bole Hall for the setting, the Frosh produce an evening full of goblins, witches, and music. Highlight of the evening was the judging of the many and varied costumes, some, found on these pages. The Frosh are to be congratulated for the fine job they did on the dance. As usual, the Christmas season brought much fun and many decorations to the LTC campus. The center of attraction was the main lobby, which was decorated in beautiful fashion, with a gigantic tree as the main point of interest. Christmas activities were culminated with the college-wide party, and stair-singing, and the very well planned Christmas Ball sponsored by the Sophomore class. CHRISTMAS DOINGS R.
