LYNDON INSTITUTE FOOTBALL 1956 Opening against Trade on September 22, Bernie Simpson took the opening kickoff on his own 15. Good interference with the last key block by Carter and L. I. had her first touchdown in less than twenty seconds, Bernie adding the extra point. Robinson added another touchdown in the second period and Carter scored one in the third. All 41 players were used and the final score was L. I. , 20 - Trade, 6. Against a good BFA team, Carter scored after seven plays and Edmunds added the extra point. BFA went ahead 21-'7. A pass from Bass to Heath scored but the point was wide. BFA added another touchdown and had a 28-13 lead at the half. L. l. dominated the second half and a Carter to Robinson pass scored. Edmunds added the extra point. The final score, BFA, 28 - L. l. , 20. ln the Burlington game, L. l. took an early two point lead after pushing the Burlington boys back to their own five yard line. Bemie Simpson scored from the three and the fine de- fensive play made that L. I. lead stand up - 8-0. The final score was Lyndon 8, Burlington, 6. The Gould game was L. I. 's trip and Gould won 13-'7. L. I. pulled the surprise play of the day when Hartwell passed to Heath who lateralled to Tim Simpson who scored on an overall 45 yard gain for L. I, 's touchdown. Bernie Simpson made it seven points and at the half the score was '7-7, Early in the final period Gould scored and L. I. continued to threaten but did not score. Captain Bass was injured in the first few minutes and Carter was also out with an injury. Montpelier, the 1956 State Champions, found L. I. without Captain Bass and Carter and although the team fought all the way and scored twice, the best team to represent the Capital City in 30 years won 39-13. Again L. I. made use of the lateral when Hartwell passed to Heath who lateralled to Iim Jackson who scored the touchdown. Jackson is the only center to ever score a touchdown for L. I. on a runnin, play from scrimmage. A pass from Ralph Devereaux to Tim Simpson, good for 40 years, scored the other L. I. touchdown and Edmunds' kick was good. The Big Game with St. Johnsbury Academy was hard fought and well Played. From the Academy's viewpoint their forward pass plays that scored touchdowns were both touched and deflected by L. I. players into alert St. Johnsbury hands. From the L. I. Viewpoint they were a couple of extremely lucky breaks. The Academy turned back six scoring threats of L. I. The institute won all the statistics, making more first downs and gaining much more ground but St. Iohnsbury Academy won, 18-6. Against Newport, L. l. won, 26-13. Carter scored in the first period and again in the second period. Bernie Simpson scored the third L. I. touchdown and added the extra point. Bernie scored again after intercepting a Newport forward pass and going 60 yards for his final touchdown.
