Lyndhurst's slate was marred only by a defeat at the hands of Garfield. The usual starting lineup consisted of: Carl Car- ini and Howie Liebenow at the ends, Werner Hei- nemnn and Jerry Hallisey at the tackles, George Woertz and Bob Ritacco manning the good posi- tion, Frank Spero at center, and Bob Kramp, Jerry DeRoma, Dave Palumbo, and Don La Guardia in the backfield. Lyndhurst opened the grid campaign on the right foot, defeating a weak Rutherford eleven. The Bears barely won their next game, beating a stubborn Bloomfield Tech squad only by 2-0. Ekeing out a 7-6 victory over the Lodi Rams, the Bears posted their third consecutive victory. For the third successive game, Lyndhurst won a squeakerg this time coming from behind to defeat Union Hill 13-12. The Bears journeyed to Passaic where they de- feated the favored Indians, for their fifth win in a row 13-7. Our winning stread was broken at the hands of the Garfield Boilermakers who handed the Bears a 35-0 setback. However the following week, Lyndhurst won, FOOTBALL TEAM dropping Paterson Central by a 20-13 count. Then Lyndhurst concluded a successful gridiron campaign by beating 21-6 their traditional turkey day rivals, the East Rutherford Wildcats. The men who concluded their playing days in L.H.S. were Bob Kramp. Dave Palumbo, Ralph Polito, Bob Terry. Skip Liebenow. Carl Carini. Werner Heinemann, Bob Ritacco, Tex Woertz, lsh Pagan, Karl Weber, Frank Costabile, Jerry Halli- sey, and Frank Spero. Lyndhurst had the honor of being chosen Group II State Champs in the Northern Division. Much of the credit belongs to Head Coach Ed Zak, who remolded a fine team out of last yearis losing squad. Many of the Lyndhurst guardsmen received spe- cial honors. George Woertz was selected as All-State Group ll guard. He was also an All-Metropolitan choice for the same position. Frank Spero made the all county team, as well as honorable mention on the All-Metropolitan team along with Bob Ritacco and Jerry DeRoma. All in all, Lyndhurst had a great campaign. Our boys may have been out-manned. even out-played, but never out-fought. Maybe this was what promp- ted Coach Zak to call the team his 'Sweetheartsi' and to say. l love themf, l think everybody 'gloved themii too. Seatedt first row, left to right: C. Caccione, G. Mike. the team's ablest play-maker and hustler gained 165 points giving him a 12 point average. Mike was at his best against East Rutherford, garnering 24 digits. Skippy also had a 12 point average as he tallied 177 points, 23 against East Rutherford. They have had two able gym teachers supervising their sports. During the hrst two years. Miss Horstman taught the girls volleyball. archery. and table-tennis. Mrs. Karras has helped them in some of the finer points of these sports. Girls' program Consists of a series of intramurals in different sports. Those that are popular are base- ball, basketball, and volleyball. The girls have other activities, such as, the archery competition. the table-tennis matches, and the foul-shooting contest. The intramurals are managed, scored. timed. and refereed by the Girls Leaders' Club who has done this work for years. C.L.C. is also responsible for the dance records and the sale of refreshments at the football games. ln addition to the intramurals the girls have been introduced to the pitfalls and harrowing es- capes of blitz and field hockey. There is also an enjoyable program of social and folk dancing as a part of their program. In all the competitive sports champion teams are selected by play-offs. Each year these girls are given their awards: you may see their pictures on these pages. Although not all the girls can be champions. they may all gain in cooperation and sportsmanship in the course of four years.
