After flying through these headwinds, our plane was grounded again for repairs. Everyone piled out, with two months time to kill. Finally over the loud s eaker came, Attention Flight 48, Passengers prepare for takeoff. Everyone climbed aboard, and after learning our flight schedule, we were acquainted with the new officers and crew. Flight Commander, Mr. Burke, Navigator, Miss Engllish, Pilot, William Landells, Co-pilot, Louise Dramis, Flight Mechanic, Eugene organ, Stewardess, Ianet DeZavala. The first layover occured, when we went to the Bunkhouse Iamboree. The next holdover was because of weather conditions, so we trooped to the Snow Ball Dance. After making all our scheduled stops, a great turmoil arose - exams again. We flew through without too much damage. After a two month's rest for the plane's overhaul, we were back for the third lalp, confident that our class officers, and crew, would get us through safely. The F ight Commander was Mr. Edmund Burke, Navi ator, Mr. Norman Murbur , Pilot, james O'Keefe, Co-pilot, Eugene Mor an, Fli lit Mechanic, William Shades, and Stewardess, Betty Hayes. The usual sclieduledg stops were observed, and wc were entertained twice on layovers, but the highlight was the stop for the Iunior Prom, with its carnival theme. Upon refueling, we took off again and were relaxin when bad weather conditions and final exams loomed ahead. With some difficulgty, we landed and were held over because of equipment trouble.- With all equipment repaired and our destination in sight, we climbed aboard for the last leg of our journe . The new crew for the flight were: Mr. Burke, our Flight Commander, Miss Bell Walker, Navigator, and Pilot, Roy Mion, Co-pilot, Iames O'Keefe, Fli ht Mechanic, Louise Dramis, and Stewardess, Lorraine Eck. We made the usual scheduled stops, but the highlight was the Senior Play, A Date With Indy. In january we attended the Dance of Ianus, since weather con- ditions revented flying. After months of poor flying weather, we were viciously attackeclj by tail winds, and even with all our experience those final exams proved themselves a rough ordeal. VV e landed for the last time together at our final des- tination, one-hundred and ninety-three strong. We met for graduation exercises and our class trip, we said our final farewells at the Senior Banquet. Now we have received our certificate for private flights into the wide and stretching horizons which hold our future, everyone on his own, separate course. W BEST DRESSED ' U 1 1 1 Liu V fb Q Ax.. Lcyndhurst started its football season on the first of September. When the boys arrive at the high school, they were greeted by three new coaches and about forty tryouts worked hard for three weeks to get into shape for the big Rutherford game. Bob White was elected captain and quarterback for '47. Our first game was with Rutherford. What a ame that was, with our team trailing 19 to 0 at the half. However Lyndhurst fin ht back to almost tie the game in the closing seconds. But a powerful Rutherforcf eleven held strong and the game ended with the score 26 to 19 in favor of Rutherford. The next game was a hard fought stru gle that saw a tough Bogota eleven gl? down to defeat 7 to 6 as the sturdy Lyndhurst eleven, led by Bob White, held 't em on the one-foot line for three lays in the closin seconds. That was our first win in the Bergen-Passaic Interscllolastic League and the start of the longest consecutive winning streak in the history of Lyndhurst. Lodi- was our next victim, because our powerful eleven outdid Lodi in every way by handing them a 31 to 12 shellacking. The Bergenfield game was a one-sided tilt that never saw our boys in any dan- ger. The game ended 46 to 0 in favor of Lyndhurst. The next tussle was indeed a game our boys wanted to win, for it was Bloom- field Tech, that scored their only win against us last year. Led by the hard fighting of White, Vanderbeck, Manisera and Iaquinto, our star backfield, the boys wa - loped Bloomfield Tech 24 to 0. Our next game was with Hawthorne on their field. This was thought to be the game of the year, for the two leaders of the B. P. I. L. were meeting. The game was a see-saw battle, for the lead changed many times. With three minutes to go, Hawthorne was leading 19 to 18. In three downs we had the ball on their nine-yard line, fourth down and six yards to go. Big Bill Vanderbeck was iven the ball in our last hope. Putting his head down and giving it all he had, Ee plowed over the goal to give Lyndhurst the final decision, 25 to 19. Ramsey, our next foe, was not as difficult to overcome as Hawthorne. This game ended with Lyndhurst winning 25 to 12 over another B. P. I. L. contestant. This was the sixth game in a row that our boys had won. The record was six straight wins. If Lyndhurst won next week, it would make the longest winning streak in the history of the school. Our next foe was our old friend, North Arlington. The day of the game saw lots of tension in the Lyndhurst stands. The boys went out on the field determined not to. be defeated by the foe. Although the score was 13 to 12 in our favor, it was not as close a game as it might seem. VVe had a few bad breaks and North Arling- ton capitalized on them. Fairlawn, our next opponent, had a fast strong team. We had to beat them or settle for a tie in the B. P. I. L. It was a hectic game that Lyndhurst lost, 19 to 6. We played a good, hard game but it seemed as if is wasn't our day. We then had to share the crown of the B. P. I. L. Mighty East Rutherford was our next game, on Thanksgiving Day. East Rutherford had lost only to Clifton, the state champs of group . We played our best, but against a mighty force, it didn't do any good. East Rutherford went on to win 20 to 0. The season, however, was a glorious one, winning seven games and losing three. Two out of the three lost were to group-three schools, Rutherford and East Rutherford. , The graduating football lettermen. are Bob White, Richard Iaquinto, Bud Marrone, Alan Renter, Dom Spina, Bob Ellenberg, Ed Henderson, Angelo Checki, Eugene Peterman, lay La Russo, and Bill Landells. pn. -..-., . ...V -' ' -. 2' BOYS' SPORTS BASKETBALL ........ ............ ........ This year's team coached by Mr. Harold Brown had a tough schedule to meet, and both coach and team worked hard to get into shape for the games to come. The opening game was a thriller which saw our alumni defeat the varsity 34 to 3l.fThe Bears then lost to Rutherford, Lodi and East Rutherford. The next game, cguite a thriller, was a nip and tuck affair which saw our mighty mites defeat Bergen ield 40 to 38 on our court. The varsity then bowed to Ramsey, Hawthorne, North Arlington, and Bogota. The boys never gave up in a contest and really showed their skill when they defeated Harrison 48 to 33. The big guns in this smashing victory were lay La- Russo, Don Divine, Barry Halm, Ed Stankus and last, but by no means least, Bryce Stracken. Fairlawn proved to be too good for our boys, for they were defeated on the Fairlawn court. East Rutherford came to Lyndhurst a favored team. It seemed as though they should be, for at the half they were leading by about 15 Points. The Bears never gave up but came back and almost tied the game in the final seconds. East Rutherford froze the ball and won the game 33 to 32. We had a game with Bergenfield on their own court and defeated t em 37 to 29. We all know that our boys did not win every game, but we are still very proud of them for we know that they tried their hardest. The varsity lettermen are: centers, Iay LaRusso and Carmine Marrone, for- wards, Ed Stankus, Ron Esposito, and Don Divine, guards, Bryce Stracken, Barry Halm, and Iohn White. The manager of the 47-48 team was Ioe Rosa. We at Lyndhurst High are pleased with the games these fellows have played. Even though the team did not win all the games, we want them to know that we appreciate those victories which they did make. GIRLS' SPORTS APPRECIATION ...... ...... ..........
