We felt at a loss because of our inexperience at this Court of Education, but we gave our dances, The Winter Frolic and the Easter Frolic. With the aid of William Bernadino, Eugene Spies, Victor Thorne and Grace Assante as our defense, we came through our first year victoriously. 2, After witnessing our country's declaration of war as freshmen, our first move was to be appointed to var- ious sections of the Victory Corps, which L. H. S. had organized. Each student wore a button to symbolize his membership in the organization. Our defense, William Clark, Grace Assante, Theresa Thomas, and Marilyn Earp capably guided us through our second year. We held our Soph Hop, followed by the Sophomore Dance, and Rnu came to the completion of the afternoon session. It was now our turn to be morning students for the remaining two years--so we thought. A slight change occurred in our curricula, the scientific and classical courses were combined into the college preparatory. The greatest event of the year, however, was our Junkr Prom which we gave for the seniors. Prior to this, we had held our Penquin Polka, a very pleasant interlude. We, as juniors, experienced final examinations which were required of us for the first time in our school 11fe.We were led through this year by our capable defense at- torneys, Charles McDonnell, Bernard We1s,Henry Simonak, and Louis Frangipane. Our final trial came in l944,when Henry Hutchinson Bernard Weis, Harry Wregg, and Lucy DiCamillo were our leaders. In this, our last year, we first had full- time session. We held the Harvest Moon Dance, the Ihllo- we'en Dance and the Senior's Farewell Dance, which were very successful. Then came our biggest event of the year, the Senior Banquet. After these many trials we had a feeling of pride in ourselves as we received our diplomas on graduation night. -5A... ig. .. EVN' resiclen wx -ng .: :a.g.,-..-.,- ' i.',,.- . .v ..--.-Inv. .. On entering the Bergen-Passaic County League, the football squad found that many changes had come about. Mr. Lustbader, the backfleld coach of '43 replaced Mr. Page as head coach.Mr. Lust- bader is the only athlete and graduate of L. H. S. to become coach, His assistant, Frank Cardinale of Nutley is well known throughout the staxe of New Jersey. They were a good coaching staff and made a great hit with the fellows. With ten lettermen returning, the Golden Bears had high hopes. The returning letter men in the backfield were: Tim Lembo, the Bears quarterback and demon on the offense and defense, William Bernadino, our shifty, speedy back, Jim Grady and Angelo Palo, our plunging and blocking back, and Joe Iosco, the blocking back with the educated toe. On the line we had Anthony De Venlo, a lightweight tornado, at center, with Augie Paluzzi, Vincent Matthews and Frank Carucci at ends. Augie and Vinnie did a terrific job on the offense and defense. We had Ted Liva and Richard Burke as tackles opening those big holes, with Bill Ellenberg, Gene Spies, and Joe Zirpoli as guards helping those backfield men get through. Opening the football season, Lyndhurst played Rutherford at home, losing 21--6. In the second game our team showed real spirit whipping the North Arlington Vikings by the score of 20--13. The Golden Bears met Bergenfield, a new opponent, in their first league contest. The Bears outplayed Bergenfield all the way but cou1dn't out-score them. The score was Bergenfield 15, Lyndhurst 7. In our next game the Bears took on the heavy Lodi team, that was picked to win, but Lyndhurst outplayed the Rams and ended with a 7--7 tie. East Rutherford, another heavy team, thrashed the Bears by a 26--O score. At Hawthorne, our second League game, we saw the Lyndhurst boys hitting theirstride and walking off with a 27--O score. I Traveling away up to Ramsey to play the third league ig f,,.,w ,:, contest, our team d1dn't look too well the first half,1os1ng i 6--O, but in the second half the Bears displayed their power A by subdueing Rainsey 18--6. 98 Going to Bogota we met the heaviest team on our schedule in the fourth league BEIGE The Bears started off early on these Pirates, scoring in the first few minutes of play. It ended a one-sided affair, the Bears winning 33--O. Thanksgiving day the Bears held a heavily favored Belleville team to a scoreles- tie in a muddy field at Lyndhurst. The Bears, totalling ll9 points to 86 points for their opponents had one of the best teams in five years and took second place in the Bergen-Passaic County League. BASEBALL The Bears unon resuming baseball last year had a fairly good season, winning three games and losing five. we took two games away from Harrison and beat Bogota, with Ramsey defeating us twice, Bergenfield once, Wood-R1dge and Lodi both defeating us once each. This year we hone to have a better season. Our seven lettermen from last year were: Captain Tim Lembo, holding the lmnortant corner at third base and George Morrell spearing them at short, Tullio Fraterigo our Joe Gordon at second, Lanky Frey covering f1rst and Bud Thorne who ie our undescribable outfielder, can throw, hit, and really pull those balls out of the air. .Ee , We have a good game schedule and hope to come out victor- ia. gg rv Qu lous. ,- I u , , :' 'K it 1, . www. ,,. nail BASKETBALL This year's basketballs eason was a good one for L. H. S. The Bears played 21 games, winning 8 and dosing 13. However, when the Bears entered the tournament we lost to a much taller team, Dumont, by the tune of 27 to 29. The Bears were leading the way with beautiful heads up ball until that last minute. The Dumont gang came from behind to defeat us. However, the Bears who were the underdogs made a good showing. The boys were sorry that Marty Dolan couldn't see the team he coached for three years enter the tournament. They were his boys who had been shining on the court all season. The Bears had five lettermen back this year, but lost Bill BernadLno because of an injury in football. The returning lettermen were: Captain Jim O'Hare, Ed Farrell, Lef ty Mitchell, George Morrell and Phil Lembo. O'Hare, Farrell, Lefty Mitchell, Simonak spraked that offense neatly, and played good ball on the defense too. The main men on the defense were George Grieco and Phil Lembo who really did a fine job getting the bel off the backboard. TRACK Our Track team is out there practicing every day to get themselves in shape for those school meets. We had a good season last year knocking over our neighbors from Passaic twice. Our coaches, Mr. Olson and Dr. Moran, are doing a swell job in getting our trackmen into shape. Ray Frey, our one letterman coming back, as well as a host of others are working hard to get into those track meet line-ups. Tom Domenico is one of our speedsters to watch this year. Harry Wregg ls another long-distance runner to watch this season. 3 a 1 1 r ' I 1' . i'sL '-V... 5 ' ':. 34 .hc is QM ffMf if 551 Qi ' 4' 'f w' g fb M f E55 MQ if fiflfffff Wfgs w if 3133 gffjfjzoigg f i' X,'Y-ixdfgggi 6 2 'A x WSJ BS? 155296 Ja 'Y' Qsywwgigw .W uma?
