Now having had this most noble and gallant honour bestowed upon us, let us pause, and look back upon the events of the ff past four years. , . 1 First, in the lowly capacity of knaves, we had great diffi- Irp A fi yi culty in adapting ourselves to our new surroundings. Although Q4 4 'W maltreated by our superiors, we strove forward with much enthusiasm. ' We chose Jeanne Muhleisen as our leader and James Kearns as her aid. Kathleen Lyons tabulated our progress during this period and Audrey Bulloch guarded our money bag. Mr. Kalter became the guardian of our spurs. It was now our duty to entertain our knights and squires, many of our knaves par- ticipated in the Fall Frolics of 1937 and 1938, both of which were successful. Later we gave our first dance, the Knaves Bout. We decorated the hall in blue and yellow, and served refreshments to our guests. Having successfully completed our period as knaves, we were promoted to the rank of pages. we were getting accustomed to our duties by this time, and at a meeting of our kin, Jeanne Muhleisen was again elected leader with James Kearns second in charge, and Audrey Bulloch and Carl Eck lesser guests. While in our second step, we gave the popular Snow Dance, with large snow balls and snow men suspended from the ceiling. Decorations were in black and white. Half of our period of service had passed before we realized it, we were elated over our new position as squires. Jeanne Muhleisen was again chosen first in rank with Michael Latorraca second. This year Kathleen Lyons was our recorder, and our gold was kept by George Mclntyre. The events of this year were more important to us than ever before, and we enter- tained the knights at the great Promenade in a hall which was decorated in beautiful Hawaiian style. In the third quarter of this year, many of our squires took part in the Spring Show. We entered our last step of the ladder, sadly, realizing that theapproachinggyear would be our last. At a great meeting of the Round Table, Jeanne Muhleisen was again given the seat of honour, with Michael Latorraca at her right side. Our progress was recorded by Fred Schneider, and George McIntyre again guarded our money bag. Many of our knights took part in the production Footloose, and our own knights presented our senior play, June Mgg, which was a great success. Because our senior dance fell on the eve of the traditional Rutherford tournament, the attendance was limited. In spite of this handicap, all enjoyed it. Our last meeting of the knights of the Round Table took place at the great ban- quet which we attended in one body on January 28, 1941. On leaving the portals of our Great Hall, we cannot help recalling many pleasant and lingering memories, which, altho past, will never be forgotten and shall be cher- ished for the remainder of our lives. Out of this number, he selected thirty-five to be members of the squad that was to carry Lyndhurst High School's football banner through the 1940 season. Starting his fourth term as head grid menton and having lost his entire start- ing team of 1959 through graduation, Coach Murburg was faced with the immediate problem of moulding a new first-string eleven. This task was accomplished only after a number of strenuous practice sessions. The eleven performers elevated to knighthood by the coach included: Carl Eck,Tom Smith, Louis Breuer, Paul Fontan, Howard Payne, Bob Hough, John Kaminski, Mike LaTorraca, Fred Perello, Charles Zakzeskl, and Al Rupinski. To inaugurate their season, the valiant Golden Bears, clad in their protective armor, opposed the Gaels offSt. Mary's who proved to be easy opponents since they suf- fered a humiliating 53-to-0 drubbing. Elated over their victory in the curtain-raiser, the Bears traveled to Hacken- sack where they encountered the strong Comet gridders. The County Seaters employed their ground attack to advantage in handing Coach Murburg's forces their first setback. The final score was 9-to-O. The football colors of Lyndhurst High School were lowered for the second time in the season when a powerful Rutherford combination crashed through to gain a 14-to-0 victory. The Blue and Gold apparently was not disheartened by the Rutherford defeat, as it bounced back to post a decisive 50-to-0 win over Ramsey's Rams. Leading Lyndhurst's touchdown parade, Al Rupinski and Mike LaTorraca spearheaded the assault. It was the Mustangs pitted against the Bears when the Clifton team came to pay its respects to the Murburg-trained footballers. In this clash the Clifton pigskinners outclawed their foes, 25-to-0. A favored Ridgewood aggregation than had to rely on a spectacular BO yard run to earn a 6-to-6 tie with the hard-charging Lyndhurst gridmen. The next skirmish saw Lodi's Rams and Lyndhurst's Bruins battle to a scoreless deadlock. ' In their tussle with East Rutherford, the Murburgmen played the role of the un- derdog. Scoring in the second period, they led at the halftime, but an uprising by the Wildcats that produced a pair of touchdowns gave East Rutherford the win by a 14-to-7 count. Furnishing the opposition for Lyndhurst in the annual Thanksgiving Day Classiq Ridgefield Park managed to squeeze out a 19-to-14 victory. Since they began their ri- valry in 1937, the Bruins have been unable to emerge victorious over the Scarlets in the Turkey day tilts. BASKETBALL Basketball rehearsals at Lyndhurst High School got underway this season long before King Football decended from his throne for another year. Coach Kalter hopes to form a combination that will garner its share of triumphs as it runs through a schedule which lists seventeen contests. Ed Beasty, the lone returning letterman, forms the nucleus around which Coach Kalter is constructing his starting quintet. Following the preliminary tryouts, the varsity squad was named. Making up this group are: Bernie Raabe, Richard Gleeson,Louis Bennett, Kenneth Funabashi, Jack Zimmer, and Roosevelt Pollara. JOUSTS Soccer Call out the Heralds! The Jousts have arrived! Here come the knights in armor charging down the field behind a fast-moving ball. Wait! Look--there are some blue and gold clad figures running out to meet them. The battle is on! Watch that ball go from one kicking foot to another. The soccer tournament has begun with a ven- geance. There are six teams, each captained by a knight from the Girls' Leaders Club. Oh--oh: A new enemy has appeared on the field--Jack Frost decided to take a hand. He entered the contest early enough to prevent a winner, but not early enough to stop the fun. Many thrilling games were played before he finally emerged victorious. Ping Pong Another tournament has begun! What a time of revelry this is. No sooner is one joust completed, than another is begun. As it is now, we will just have to watch and see which knight becomes the champion. Basketball The favorite sport of all the knights-basketball, was carried to a triumph- ant end this year--triumphant for the winning team, anyway. There were two leagues, one each for the morning and the afternoon school. There were more participants this year than ever before. The members of the winning team wore their spurs in the form of gold basketballs. Awards In order for a girl to earn gym points she must work hard and show qualities of leadership and good sportsmanship. She may well be proud of an award she receives. For earning twenty-five gym points, a girl receives her numerals, for fifty points, a monagramg for seventy-five points, a letterg and for one-hundred points, a gold basketball. Girls' Leaders Club t In order for a girl to be eligible for membership in the Girls' Leaders Club she must earn fifteen gym points and be in the morning school. The girls manage and officiate in the various activities. We have six members in the club from our classg they are: Rose Buckel Audrey Bulloch Kathryn Harseim Anna Lynch Rose McCafferty Jeanne Muhleisen Grace Thorn Audrey Bulloch was manager of the archery tournament with Rose Buckel, Rose McCafferty, and Anna Lynch as assistant managers. Jeanne Muhleisen was basketball manager for the morning and afternoon school leagues. Different members of the club come back on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to assist in taking charge of the gym classes. They also sell candy at home football and basketball games. The Girls' Leaders Club holds a dance once a year. The girls are in charge of it, under the supervision of Miss Horstman. JOUSTS Archery 1 2 i 2 Arrows are fl ing thick and fast over the field today. All of theZig?ghtEinEre iogieting to see whoyis the best archer. Who will be the win- ner? As soon as the scores are added, we'll know. King Arthur is ready to Present the laurel to the victor. Here she is--Anna Lynch! 3900115 P1806 8063 to Marie Cafbonare and third to Betty Clark. Enthusiasm ran very high for this sport, and the winners may well be proud of their newly earned spurs. Girls' Leaders Council 'The leader can accomplish what others Dare Not Say.N This aptly expresses the idea of the Girls' Leaders Council. The purpose of the council is to bring out the qualities of leadership and character in order to insure the highest quality of womanhood. This year there are only two girls on the Girls' Leaders Council. They are: Jeanne Muhleisen, president, and Audrey Bulloch. Under the supervision of Miss Horstman the Council manages the various acti- vities and takes charge of the girls' afternoon gym classes. Appreciation The girls of the class of February, 1941, would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Miss Horstman. We will never forget her untiring efforts in helping us in every way to be better losers in sports. i- - -.-.-.- ll F5 11.4- 91825 Z' QPF? i A -' . ff: -Xfkf f W' Ai I ygkg::7fw ,I L -,f g , ,. 545: , HW? 1 lik Q Q.
