We trooped into High School with confidence and a feeling of great satisfaction, only to find ourselves labeled Ufreshie.N For a short time we were lost amidst the throngs of upper- c assmen. In our freshman year. we were still trying to orient ourselves and our only important event was the Freshman Dance. The decorations. we still being very green, were very simple consisting only of shrubs and palms. The class elected Mrs. Brainard. Sponsor, Charles Carlozzi, President, Gladys McIntyre, Vice-president, Jack Germain, Secretary, and Robert Dunn, Treasurer. u Our sophomore year found us a little more settled. Cur officers for the year were: Gladys McIntyre, President, Paul Pollara. Vice-president, Ruth Ostheimer, Secretary, and Dorothy Amrein, Treasurer. This year we gave the HBarn Dance.H The decorations typified the name, and the master of ceremonies for the evening was Burton Davis, who was garbed in hill-billy costume. Each year found us doing more and more. In our junior year the officers were: Myra Goble, President, Paul Pollara. Vice-president, Cecelia Bess, Secretary, Dorothy Amrein. Treasurer. We branched out and gave the very popular UBug Dancen with fantastic decora- tions, one of which was a huge bug suspended from the ceiling. Recordings were first used at this dance along with the new lighting system. For selling the largest number of tick- ets for the second all-school show, the class received five dollars. The final event of the year was the Junior Prom given for the Seniors. The decorations in the beautiful with lattices of climbing roses. Our most able leaders for the year are: -Myra Goble, President, Walter president, Edna Sidletsky, Secretary, Dorothy Amrein. Treasurer. The Senior Feveru brought forth some hidden talent in Carl Gorlesky. who burst forth as of explosives. ,Our final gesture was the Valentine Day Dance, HCupid's Ball Throughout four years in High School the class has been well repre school affairs. Charles Carlozzi was President of the General Organizationo year. Anthony Morici has won recognition as our leading artist. The foo t gym were most Ruzika, Vice- Play. HSpring an enthusiast ll ented in all in his senior ball team and the band were made up largely of Seniors. Our pleasure in the honors brought to us by these students was dimmed by the loss of Hazel Piratzky, who twirled for our band. As guests of the junior class, we attended the Junior Prom in May. In one body we at- tended the Banquet and on this twenty-second day of June. one thousand. nine hundred and thirty-nine, we leave the portals of our Alma Mater to take our places in the World of To- MOTPOW. As Seniors we have reached the end of our high school days, we leave with many pleas- ant and lingering memories that we shall never forget. THINKING OF HAZEL First she was here--among us--gay. Living her life in a sunshiny way. Hers was a beautifully simple manner, Courage and cheer her high-held banner. Then she had gone to that far away place. And only her vision remained here to face. For she had gone early--Oh, joyful delight-- To her fitting reward. Shall we mourn her plight? Little we know of the life ever after That wonderful kingdom of love and laughter. But because she had suffered, lived nobly her ,years, God invited her early from this vale of tears To live with the angels. Now happy--at rest. Dear Hazel in heavenly splendor is blest. . 1 K ' IN MEMORIAM A Although Hazel was taken so young, her life was already filled with the beautiful things that many of us wish for during our whole life. She had that radiant smile and cheery disposition that one rarely sees in one Person. She was gifted in music, for she both played the piano and sang. She had artistic ability. too. It was one of her ambitions to be a great designer. She was a good dancer. She had had the good fortune to attend two Proms, for it seemed to be plan- ned for her to have many pleasures before her life was ended. Surely, she was famous in high school for her ability to wield the baton. Never before had the school had a girl band leader and never will they have one more charming. Being the Drum Major of the Legion band was, I believe, one of her greatest joys. Some may have been envious because of her many talents, which we do not have, but now we rejoice that she was priviledged to enjoy them for her few brief years. 52 . mt gf is.-f .h, 4 'W .f, Nl. 5 gnior Play spring show . . - 'ql' 2 A , .. Her excel- lent instruction brought out all the leadership and sportsmen-like qualities of the girls. We, therefore, as a token of our appreciation, dedicate this portion of our yearbook to her. OIRLS' LEADERS COUNCIL I ll ,p X -MOTTO- HThe leader can accomplish what others dare not try.H Miss Horstman, besides being physical education instructor, organized the Girls' Lead- ers Council, the purpose of which is to further initiative, self-confidence and dependa- bility of the girls. In our class there are three girls who are active members of the council. They are: Elsie Eck, president, Ruth Koehler, and Ruth Milat. The girls in the Girls' Leaders Council are given the opportunity of taking charge of the afternoon classes as well as assisting in all the inter-mural activities. onus moms cws C C ,K P' Q 9 -AIM- HTeach girls to be winners and, if they cannot be winners, teach them . to be good losers.n A girl who obtains fifteen gym points, and who has the distinct qualities of being a good leader, a good sport and a willingness to devote her time to physical education work, may become a member of the Girls' Leaders Club. The members of our class belonging to this club are: A Dorothy Amrein Ruth Koehler Helen Carey Hazel McCafferty Filomena Carrina Gladys McIntyre Agatha Casale Lydia Moller Elsie Eck Ruth Milat Frances Eustace Ruth Millett Veronica Keefe Edna Sidletsky Dorothy Kiefer I Lois Slick Sebina Volkertzen BASKETBALL Basketball is the major sport in the girls activities. Because of the extensive in- terest in it, games were played each Monday and Wednesday night, therefore, the teams were divided into two leagues. Twelve Seniors who were chosen captains, in turn chose their teams. The winner of the Monday night league played the winner of the Wednesday night league, to determine the winning team. Then the winning team of the February term played the winning team of the September term for the championship. The champions received silver basketballs. INTER-CLASS'BASKETBALL The climax of this entire season comes during the inter-class basketball competition when fifteen players from each class are chosen to represent their respective classes. Again the Seniors captured the trophy for inter-class competition. The'players on the team are as follows: Elsie Eck Ruth Millett Dorothy Kiefer Ruth Milat Ann Thaller Marjory Humphreys Filomena Carrina Edna Sidletsky Agatha Casale Lois Slick Ruth Dawson Alice Jaszczult Ruth Koehler Lena DeVenio Dorothy Amrein CCaptainJ FOUL-SHOOTING CONTEST We hold a foul-shooting contest at the end of every basketball season, to determine which girl can shoot the most baskets from the foul line. Agatha Casale, of the senior class, came in first, and Dorothy Amrein second. INTER-CLASS VOLLEY BALL Inter-class volley ball is one of the new games, which has aroused much interest and gained much popularity. There were four teams in every class, each having the name of an orchestra leader. The winning team in the first period played the winning team in the second period, and so on until the championship team was determined. PING PONG Another favorite sport among the girls is ping pong. The tables which are put up in the gymnasium, are in use during the gym periods, and also on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The most exciting event is the tournament, which makes each girl strive to be a champion. We also have a boys' ping pong tournament, which creates much competition among them. ' The interest in this sport is becoming so great, that we now have the tables set up during the noon hours, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. . ARCHERY Archery, during the last year has attained a prominent place in sports.V It is probably considered the second in popularity, with basketball leading. We bought many new supplies for the season some of which were: bows arrows arm guards, and finger tabs. 7 9 7 Every year we hold a tournament to determine the Robin Hood of our school. About one hundred girls took part in the contest last year. HORSE-BACK RIDING CLUB Horse-back riding is becoming increasingly popular. Now we have, not only girls in this club, but many boys, who enjoy brisk canters in the fall and spring. . The girls and boys, who wish to make arrangements with Miss Horstman, to ride for an hour at the Radburn Riding Academy in Radburn, New Jersey. . V . w' in Y ' ' f-. 3 i 3- 'E an , . Every day when practice was called it would either rain or be so cold that there was no chance for much practice before the work out game with Rutherford. Coach La Tronica had little opportunity to Judge the abilities of his men. This year there are only a few fellows back who played on last year's team and most of the positions are open. Mr. La Tronica's most difficult position to fill this year is that of pitcher. What looks best this spring on the mound is Mike La Torraca, Charles Margiotta, Jimmy Beaverson,Edward Miraglia, who has done most of his playing in the field, is also able to pitch a nice ball. The veterans playing this year are: Charlie Carlozzi, catcher: Albert Russo, short- stop, Leo Reilly, third base man with wid Painter, and Walt Ruzika in two of the field positions. The other places which are being filled are: Edward Sullivan, Ray Pacifico, or Bob Dunn on first, Jack McAloon third base position. Also in the field are Edward Miraglia and George McIntyre. With this line up, Coach La Tronica, as well as the whole school is expecting to have a good season. BASKETBALL . The basketball team, under the leadership of its new coach, Mr. Kalter, came through with a fairly good record. Coach halter worked mostly on the younger fellows who will be back next year, and before the season was over these boys could really handle a basketbalL There were two Seniors who the coach kept. These lads were: Frank Reilly and Tom Walsh. Some of the fellows on our team this year, playing for old L. H. S. are: Charlie Margiotta, Warren Sellen, Richard Beck, Al Leier, Robert Salvatore and Leo Reilly. TRACK Coach Olson has his squad out on the cinders every day that the track isn't covered with water,so that they will be ready for the keen competition which is in store for thenn By the looks of the men out there, burning up the track, it seems to be a very good season in the making. There are quite a few veterans who didn't do half bad last year and are coming along even better this time. Some of these boys are: Harvey Gerlach, Robert Salvatore, Wid Painter, Sam Nasco, Walter Koleheim and Donald Gailing. With all these lads running for the school, it looks like a very promising track season this year for L. H. S. Robert Kirpatrick, who was in line for a few eveuts, had to withdraw from them because of illness. We were all sorry that this happened, because we felt that he might have brought some honors to L. H.
