The FFA was off to a good start this year by picking up 12 banners at various judging events over the summer. Our annual poinsettia sale went better than expected this year. The outstanding salesmen were Henry and Harold VanBerkum. Walter Leaf, Jeff Sestroom, and Neal Velthuizen. The FFA sold Easter lilies in April to raise funds for their annual fishing trip at the end of the school year. The FFA would like to thank all the people who bought poinsettias and Easter lilies and to those who support the FFA. eS Back row: Julie Silva on Donna Erickson’s shoulders, Kim VanderHaak, Debbie Tjoelker, Janel Nonhoff, Debbi Bosman, Leanne Lagerway, Lisa Goering, Candy Postma, Sam Wood, Karla VanBeek on Leanna Honcoop’s shoulders. We also have a new student this year; Lori, from Thailand. We learned a lot about their cul- tures. With the Exchange students, we _ cele- brated their birth- days, and in the spring, we went to Victoria and spent a Saturday up there. While we were in Vic- toria, we met other foreign exchange students from other countries. We raised money for this trip “by taking tickets and cleaning up after basketball games. We had over 50 members in our club this year and all were active. A special thanks to Mrs. Noe for helping me and the other officers plan and prepare the meetings. Darlene Nelson and Jolene Bosman were named Ist team all county-while Donna Erickson and Lisa Strong were picked second team. Sonja Vonk received honor- able mention. Team awards for the Lions were: most valuable, Darlene Nelson; most improved, Sonja Vonk; and most inspirational, Kelly Dykstra. The JV’ team finished with a 12-1 season record and 9- 1 league. The ‘‘C”’ team finished 10-0 league and 12-1 overall. _ The Lady Lions had a very successful season. The eight seniors will be greatly missed, but the underclassmen show a bright future. The team will miss graduating seniors Paul Bonsen, Bryan Larson, and Duane VanderYacht. The girl’s team had only four runners with five being the minimum e number to qualify as a team and establish a league record. They ran well as individuals nevertheless, with Juli Reinsma picking up a ninth place ribbon at the county league meet and three first place finishes in dual meets. The team's season record was 12 wins and 11 losses and they placed 4th in the league. The strength and experience of this team came from the seniors. The five seniors have been playing ball together for the last five years and were led by Donna Erick- son the team leader in points and rebounds. At forward, Shelly Krueger provided the needed outside shooting while Darlene Nelson was an aggressive rebounder and led the team in assists. Guards, Jolene Bosman, who was the inspi- rational leader, and Terri Eveland, best defensive player, gave the team a good backcourt. Others who saw alot of varsity playing this year were Kristin Boyd, our “‘Most Im- proved’’ award winner, Keri Clark, a freshman, Kim Vander- Haak and Janel Nonhoff. Hopefully, we can build each year on this group’s accomplishments because maybe this team has turned girl's basketball around at Lynden High School. 4 , F wit Seniors Big ‘‘D”’ ( 2 D bi Ars “ eg . eee e Te f tages Ow F t) er: te. ae 5 leg) ‘a Arcee a! hws 2S ie ete é jy see ante 2b niente x: daemein ... ne = Lisa Alexander, Coach Mrs. Knutson, Coach Mark Matthiesen, Kelly Casey, Lisa Holman, Julie Note- boom, Charmaine Sheets, Sam Wood, Kim Arntzen, Gina Ortiz, Kristie Linde, Debbi Tjoelker, Val Morgan BASKET Here's the plan... The Lions started the year with one starter from the team which finished second in the state. December was highlighted with wins over Sehome, Richmond, Mt. Baker, and Nooksack, while suffering losses to Lynden Chris- tian, Bellingham, Ferndale, and Sehome. The new year brought many league successes as the Lions went on to win the league championship for the first time in three years. District saw the Lions win their first game against Tolt 56-53, only to lose the semi-final game to South Whidbey 75-64. The Lions again fought their way back into contention by defeating Bellevue Christian 68-49. This set up the showdown game with Kings to determine the third entry to state. Kings pulled off a hard fought 50-44 win and put an end to an exciting but disappointing season. By doing so, he kept the Lions record of sending one person to State for 12 years in a row. ‘‘The year was a rebuilding year’’ Coach Dave Weidkamp said, ‘‘but next year we will be returning 13 wrestlers.’’ The team will be losing 3 experienced wrestlers; Kevin Allshouse, Jeff Bailey, and John Steele.
