TORCH CLUB Sec Treasure-Roxanne Lyon, President-James Tiesinga, Vice-President-Beth Lindell This year, the Torch Club is planning a trip to Seattle, where we will tour the University of Washington campus and watch a Mariner baseball game. In preparation for this we will sell chocolate bars, and with our twenty working members, we should be able to raise quite a bit of money. We are also hoping to have one or more speakers come to the school to discuss pending concerns which affect us all. The topics may well include economic and political views, and should be quite interesting. All of us, of course, are looking forward to this, and to a fun year in the Torch Club. I am sure we will not be disappointed. lst Row; Ron Raymond, Ryan Pugh, Duane Kingma, J ody St. John, John Gossman, Kent Preston, James Tiesinga 2nd Row; advisor, Val Nelson, Pat Gillmore, Duane VanderYacht, Kevin Boyd Kathy Bergland, Darrin VanderPol, Stuart Jones, Charlie Hubbard, Ted Pederson SCIENCE CLUB s sills | Officers; President, Darrin VanderPol, Vice President, John Gossman 17 Christoph Schebel, Vice-Pres.; Beth Lindell, Sec.; James Tiesinga, Pres.; Frederik Ottermo, Sweden; Tohru Kawamura, Japan; Al- mut Osterwald, Germany; Susan Miller, Treas. INTERNATIONAL CLUB This has been both an exciting and a rewarding year for the members of one of the most popular clubs at LHS. With several foreign exchange students, visiting us from Germany, Japan, and Sweden, we were all able to learn and benefit from the various cultural and social aspects which they represented. Of course, the year was highlighted by the International Club “farm day at the VanWeerdhuizen’s” on Friday, May 6, and the trip to Vancouver on Saturday. We did something different for this weekend, too. On Friday night we had a potluck in the high school cafeteria and everyone enjoyed it. We hope that this will be a regular activity for years to come. In the past, we have been an active and involved club; the LHS International Club has become a name synonomous with fun and excitement throughout the county-and, prob- ably, because of good reports from the many foreign visi- tors we host during the year, throughout the world. It is my hope that it will always be a club that we can be proud of. = James Tiesinga Back Row James Tiesinga-Senior, Kevin Boyd-Junior, Christoph Schebel-Senior, Duane Kingma-Senior, Jodi Tjoelker-Senior, Brian Van Kleeck-Freshman, Todd Bloomquist-Freshman. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council consists of student-elected representatives from each class working together to improve our school through ideas suggested to them by fellow classmates. This year’s student council did just that. We did various things, including amending the school Constitution and working for the passage of the school levy. It has been a privilege to serve our school in this manner. Finally, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Wall for the time he has donated to the cause. 19 The FHA Club has more active mem- bers than ever before. To raise money we sold popcorn balls and cookbooks. We sent two people to the State FHA meet- ing in Ellensburg. We also had a dinner at the end of the year with the funds that we raised. x Sitting: Joann Maassen, Chris White, Raelene Winter, Julie Courtney, Mrs. Andres, Advisor; lst Row - Kris Nielsen, Midge Luna, Stacey George, Candi Postma, Leanne Lagerwey, Juli Reinsma, Wendy Gorsegner, Jill Roosendaal, Becky Crabtree, Shannon Huestis; 2nd Row - Martha Serrato, Virginia Silva, Cara Covell, Laura Ondeck, Keri VanderZee; 3rd Row - Terri Greene, Joleen Bosman, Lisa Shea, Debbie Hudson, Tina Westman Treasurer, Joann Maassen; President, Chris White; Vice-Pres., Raelene Winter; Secretary, Julie Courtney a VARSITY-Brinda Honcoop, James Tiesinga, Charlie Hubbard, Fred Krueger, Rick Kildall, Beth Lindell, Christoph Schebel, Mike Klein, John Gossman, Ryan Pugh, Pat Gilmore, Stuart Jones, Kevin Boyd. The Lions captured their fourth consecutive WCL championship and also won the Northwest District crown for the third year running as they racked up an impressive total of seven consecutive shutouts. The Lions suffered their final setback in Federal Way as they lost to the eventual state champion North Mason Bulldogs in a quarterfinal game. This team had 14 seniors graduating, including some very fine athletes. Jody St. John, Larry Roosendaal, Dave Cowin, Jim Cowin, and Christoph Schebel were all on the WCL All-Star team, while St. John was also named to the Washington State Coaches’ All- State team. All of the seniors, however, were true champions at heart, and will be remembered throughout the annals of history as having been part of one of the finest football teams Lynden has ever. produced. Baker, Lynden’s JV team came roaring back to win all of its remaining games, becoming the County League Champs. With a record of 9 wins and one loss, this year’s freshmen and sophomores should feel good about this season and the future. Many of this year’s sophomores and possibly some freshmen will probably work themselves into starting varsity positions next year filling spots vacated by graduating seniors and gaining valuable exper- ience for the future. £ : be acs ee : eo a one Geos ‘ a int 9 2 Ss vs Har? et . - ist Row- Manager, Laura Atkins, Frederik Ottermo, Lisa Lankhaar, Paul Bonsen, Duane VanderYacht, Doug Bosman, Jodi Tjoelker, Jeff Bailey, Leon Golden - Coach; 2nd Row - Bryan Larson, Margaret Ward, Ron Raymond, Jackie Hollander, Kevin Allshouse, Juli Reinsma CROSS COUNTRY For the first time, Lynden girls’ Cross Country fielded a full team and went on to finish a commendable fifth place in district. Led by sophomore, Juli Reinsma, and senior, Jodi Tjoelker, the team made continuous im- provement throughout the season, culminating in their inspired effort at district. Other members of the team were sophomore Margaret Ward and freshmen, Jackie Hollander and Lisa Lankhaar. One senior, Doug Bosman, leaves the boys’ team with a solid foundation for next year. The boys spent the sea- son being competitive but not winning many meets. The work put in this year will definitely bring rewards in the future. Juniors on the team were: Bryan Larson, Paul Bonsen, Kevin Allshouse, Duane VanderYacht and Jeff Bailey. Ron Raymond was the lone freshman. Frederik Ottermo from Sweden added an interesting dimension to the closeness of this group. Lynden’s Volleyball Lions had a good season, placing second in the league behind Nooksack. South Widbey stopped the Lions from advancing to the state tournament by beating them at district. Roxanne Knutzen was selected to the first team all-league and junior Mari Vonk made second team. Knutzen was also selected the teams most valuable player while Rhonda Lindquist (a soph.) earned most improved and Stef Stoffer most inspirational. Only Stoffer and Knutzen graduate, which makes for a promising future for the Lions. . . (also known as Burly Loggers) Dar’s caught in the net again. We did feel our season would be successful if we accomplished the following three goals: 1) to fill the weight classes with quality athletes; 2) learn the basic skills of wrestling and; 3) to become comfortable and confident on the mat. We feel we accomplished those goals. With the loss of but one veteran senior, Christoph Schebel, who had a sensational year placing fifth in state in the Unlimited division, the future looks bright with twelve returning lettermen led by juniors John Steele, Kevin Allshouse, and Jeff Bailey, this team has the potential to establish a new tradition of winning at Lynden. lst Row: Jolene Bosman, Darlene Nelson, Lisa Strong, Roxanne Knutzen, Donna Erickson, Shelly Krueger, Kim VanderHaak, Kathy Berglund, Monica Martin. 2nd Row: Tina Westman, Mr. Papasedero, Debbi Hudson. As Coach Papasedero said at the banquet, ““We may be the second fiddle around here to the boy’s program, but the second fiddle is playing a lot louder lately.”’ This year’s girls’ basketball team made dramatic improvements in becoming competitive in the county league. They finished tops in the league in rebounding and second in total defense. Their statistics indicate that team had reached some of the goals they stated at the beginning of the season. The girls played hard and represented the green and gold very well this season. The highlights would include the first victory over Nooksack in 12 years, winning more games than the previous 6 years, and having another winning season on the J.V. level. _ The obvious lowlight was allowing Nooksack to embarrass the team in game 2 vs. Nooksack, thereby eliminating the Lady Lions from district competition. VARSITY BASKETBALL After a slow start in December, the Lynden team entered the new year with a 4-3 record. In league play, the players seemed to find themselves and ended the regular season with a fine 16-4 record. The Northwest District Tournament, always a goal for the Lions, and a possible trip to the State Tournament, was the next step. The first opponent, Bellevue Christian, was beaten by a score of 83 to 59. The next game proved to be a heartbreaker for Lynden. After leading Kings by 10 points, Lynden came up short by a score of 49 to 51. In order to get to State, Lynden had to win its next two games, and that is what the team did, beating Blaine 65 to 40, and defeating a good, South Whidbey team 59 to 43. Lynden was in the State Tournament for the 15th time! Game 1, Lynden opened up against Castle Rock, a big, talented team, losing only one game all sea- son. Being behind as many as 11 points, the Lion team fought back to tie the game with 9 seconds to play. After calling time out, setting up the last shot, Larry Roo- sendaal hit the shot of the year—an 18 foot jumper at the buzzer. A great Lynden victory—S3 to 57. Game 2, The Lions were playing undefeated and top-ranked Highland of Yakima. Again behind by 12 points, Lynden came on strong in the 4th quarter to defeat a fine Highland team 66 to 47. Game 3, pitted the two cross-town rivals, Lynden vs. Lynden Christian. After a very hard-fought game, Lynden won 47 to 41, moving into the State Championship game. Game 4, Lynden versus Orting—a very hard-fought, close game. The Lions came up short, by a score of 45 to 47. Ending a wonderful season, Lynden’s re- cord was 22 wins and 6 losses, 3rd in Northwest District Tournament, and 2nd in the State Tournament. The 1983 squad will not soon be forgotten. Several players received fine, individual honors: Jody St. John; All County, All District, All State; Tom Parkhurst; All County, Honorable Mention All State; Brian Johnston; All District, Honorable Mention All State; Steve Feenstra; All County, All State. We have a lot to look back on such as, going to state twice as sophomores, breaking in a new school as juniors, and sharing together as seniors. We’ve spent twelve years together so let’s not end it here but carry it on in later life. The underclassmen have a lot to look forward to. I hope that each of you will get totally involved in your school. Let your presence be known to all. Don’t look back on your high school years and wish you had done this, or had gone to that. GET INVOLVED ... A special thanks to the teachers, administration, and to the coaches that give us so many fun times. Good luck to each student going to jobs, college, and those still in school. Lonnquist, formerly Theresa Tromp and benefactress of the annual chess tournament, first initiated the tournament in the fall of 1971 and the first tourney was held the succeeding spring. The winner was David Brumbaugh that year. The tournament will be perpetual since she invested stocks that she and her husband wisely purchased many years ago and which can do nothing but grow. She pres- ently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she retired after having worked most of her life as an educator, nurse, and traveler. In her youth she worked locally for a Lynden The- ater owner and his wife before she attended Whatcom Normal School (WWSU). Her motto, quoted from Virgil, is “Fortune favors the bold” and she has lived by that since she first hitchhiked as a young lady. She loves the game of chess concluding that it is a great exercise and discipline for the mind. She feels this is the best way to get kids to think and at the same time benefit the community that gave her beginnings which have led to a successful and comfort- able retirement. Mr. Horman defines her as «remarkably witty and sharp,” which she is. They will be missed. Mr. Jim Top has gone into early retirement to farm, go moose hunting, and to fish. ’ ed : After teaching at Lynden for 25 years in agriculture, science, math, and diversified occupations, Mr. Top claims that the students really haven’t changed that much over the years. His main disappointment has been student’s continual interest in drugs and he is sorry that there are no effec- tive ways to fight the problem. Mr. Top also coach high school track and middle school football. “No matter what you do, be happy and feel good about yourself.” We will miss Mr. Top! Mrs. Sherry Cline worked at Lynden for 22 years. She was a good teacher and her friendli- ness will be remembered always. She taught everything from Journalism to Biol- ogy. She was the Senior class advisor for many years and her experience was a tremendous help and encouragement. Good luck in all you do, Mrs. Cline! ES PE Mr. Jake Maberry, known as the “CHIEF”, has been a big part of Lynden High for many years. He has made many contributions to LHS and the community of Lyn- den as a super teacher and a legendary coach. In the classroom, Jake was a very knowledgeable and exper- ienced teacher. Every student came out of Washington State History knowing much more than when they went in. Jake was also the boy’s P.E. teacher. As a coach, Jake had a good reputation all over the state for coaching many winning teams. In his 29 years of coaching he was the winningest coach in the state. Everyone knows Jake as a great coach, but he would also like to be remembered as a teacher that thoroughly enjoyed his work and students. We just want to say “Thanks Jake. You mean a lot to us. Take care and have fun fishing!” BUSINESS WEEK ‘83 sae | eal alll « ee AWARDS, HONORS, SCHOLARSHIPS JAMES TIESINGA Puget Sound Assoc. of Phi Beta Kappa a copy of the American Heritage Dictionary Four Year LeCocq Schol arship Voice of Democracy CHARLIE HUBBARD Texas Instrument Calculator for his accomplishments in the field of science and math BRINDA HONCOOP Awarded Honors at Entrance at SPU BETH LINDELL Soroptimist Scholarship Kiwanis Scholarship American Legion Scholarship STEPHANIE JANSEN Elks Scholarship Kiwanis Scholarship Chapter EA PEO Scholarship DAWN SMIT Two (2) Elks Vocational Scholarships (1 Local, 1 State) STUART JONES Four Year LeCocq Scholarship Georgeoff Scholarship President’s Scholarship for WWU Ten Mile Grange Scholarship LISA GIENGER Kiwanis Scholarship Word of Life Citizenship and Personal Development Scholarship VAL BERKOMPAS Jack Lambert Award CHRISTOPH SCHEBEL Kiwanis Scholarship National Merit Scholarship Trustee Scholarship from UPS HEIDI HALLBERG Western Baptist College Scholarship SUSAN MILLER Scholarship from Western Baptist College Western Baptist College Piano Contest Nooksack Baptist Church Scholarship STEPHANIE STOFFER American Business Womens Scholarship Lynden PTA Scholarship Hazel Anderson Scholarship FBLA Scholarship KENT LYON PTA Scholarship Elmer Clarkson Scholarship Hazel Anderson Scholarship TAMMY BLOOMQUIST American Legion Scholarship ROXANNE KNUTZEN FBLA Scholarship 113 SENIOR GRADUATION 1983 WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way.
