For starters, the team tied for second in county, continued on to place second behind Langley at district and therefore, became the first Lynden girls’ team to compete on the State level. We will always remember: coming from behind to defeat Nooksack, playing for the district championship, going to state, and sitting in the hotel’s jacuzzi until our skin started to shrivel. We would like to forget: the seven hour bus trip to Kennewick, the final match against Blaine, Turf’s five- minutes of fun, and the last match for the seniors on the team. Thank you; Ms. Fenton who coached us through thick and thin, Ms. McInturff for giving advice when asked upon, Mr. Vannice, who let the team stay an extra night at state and the administration and student body who supported US. This year the club sold M M’s to funda trip to Vancouver, B.C., on May 21. The itinerary included a gondola ride up a fogged in Grouse Mountain, a stop at Stanley Park before traveling to Chinatown, and dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. After dinner the club went to the Capitol 6 and saw the horror movie, “Happy Birthday to Me.’ Vancouver will never forget them as they paraded on Granville Street and accidently hit parked cars with frisbees. The membership nearly doubled, going from 20 to 38, and it qualified for National Recognition as a ‘Plus 10” Chapter. It carried out a ‘“‘Building Our American Communities” program which brought state-wide recognition at the annual state convention. The many Chapter activities and individual accomplishments during the year qualified the Chapter for the state’s “Superior Chapter” rating. Much work went into the year. The annual Poinsettia and Easter Lily drives netted the income needed to carry out our programs. The “Building Our American Communities” program helped educate the community farmers to a problem that was creeping into the area. The annual banquet, as usual, took the hard work of all the members. Individually, Gordon Vilas and Dean VanderHaak were State Farmer Candidates. Mark Fullner won the District Proficiency Award in ‘Placement in Production Agriculture and went on to state-wide competition. Dave VanWeerdhuisen, Mark Fullner and others gave Lynden the states best tractor driving team. Dave Van Weerdhuisen also established himself as the states best FFA tractor driver. This must go down as one of the finest teams, in Lynden’s fine basketball tradition. Starting the season with non-league opponents such as AA teams - Sedro- Woolley, Ferndale, North Kitsap, and AAA Interlake, each opponent was soundly defeated by the Lions. The Whatcom County Championship was claimed by Lynden for the 16th time in 25 years. The team went through undefeated with a fine 15-0 record. In the Northwest District tournament in Mt. Vernon, after soundly defeating Bellevue Christian, Lynden Christian, and Nooksack Valley, Lynden won its 9th District Championship After a season free from injuries and sickness, the flu hit the team at a bad time- the State Tournament. In the opening game against White Salmon, Lynden pulled away for a 67 to 58 victory. Lynden and Highland- undefeated teams with identical 23-0 records met, and after a difficult game, Lynden won 75 to 66. Ridgefield met the Lions, led by their giant center, 7 foot, 275 lb., Jim Renner. Lynden’s overall strength prevailed for a 59 to 46 victory. Lynden was now a finalist. Against a determined Kings’ team, Lynden prevailed with a 53 to 51 victory 4 and Lynden had claimed its 4th State Championship! “- The team graduates many outstanding athletes. These other coaches who have also helped to develop young players, and make our team a success, are Mark Matthiesen Terry DeValois, and John Clark. They do a fine job. With the loss of so many fine players through graduation, what about next year? With these excellent J.V. players and those returning from last year’s varsity, Lynden could field another fine team! Lastly, this was a great basketball team! They had size, discipline, intelligence, bench strength and a great desire to be champions! (L-R) Coach; Terry DeValois, S. Vander Yacht, P. Bonsen, D. The administration, teachers, coaches, and mostly the students have made this a memorable year. It has been a great year for me as Student Body President, playing on two championship teams and being involved with a great student body and teaching staff. I wish to thank everyone who helped me this year in all the activities for which I was responsible. With all the traditions at this great school, I am pleased we could end it all by being known as the ‘‘School of Champions.” The upcoming students will have the responsibility to start new traditions and to make their marks for themselves at the new school.
