JOURNALISM The Journalism class was made up of five students who were interested in putting out a school newspaper. The interest and enthusiasm of these students provided the student body of Lynden High School with an excellent newspaper twice a month. Each paper provided information on happenings around school and the community. Much time was spent by each of these students in interviewing people attending functions, composing and typing articles. This was Lynden’s first newspaper in four years, and each of these students deserves credit for a job well done. Lynden High School students are encouraged to become acquainted with other cultures through travel, exchange programs, and personal contacts. Headed by officers Kalise Linde, (President), Alisa Root, (V. Pres.), and Sheri King, (Sec.-Treas.) the club had a very successful year. Fund-raising activities included a cake-walk, selling candy from different countries and sweeping the gym after basketball games. The main event of the year was the International week-end held April 25 and 26. Students from several countries stayed with Lynden-area families and visited school on Friday. After school the students and their hosts met at the VanWeerdhuizen farm for a snack, hayride and tour of the milking barns. Friday night students and families met for a picnic at Berthusen Park. Saturday the foreign students and several L.H.S. students joined in an outing to Vancouver, B.C. which included visits to Stanley Park, the Planetarium, and Gas Town. It was a very enjoyable day. The beginning of fourth quarter marked the arrival of two new foreign visitors. Renata Contarelli, from Brazil, was hosted by the Birdsey family and attended school for the quarter. Marta Chaparro, from Colombia, served as an aide in Mrs. Noe’s Spanish classes and audited two classes, U.S. History and English 9. Miss Chaparro was hosted by the Noe family. MARK’S BULLDOGGING 34 Football The Lynden Lions went undefeated in league play this year, winning the County Championship with a 9-0 record. In the last eight years, the Lions have won 3 league championships, tied for 2 more, and finished 2nd three times. The record for that time has been 64 wins and 12 losses with 2 ties. The Lions were led by 19 seniors and 16 juniors on the Varsity team. By winning several close games the Lions showed good defense and a consistent offense. The highlight of the year was the 39-18 thrashing of the defending state champs, Blaine Borderites, on Oct. 5, which eventually decided the Whatcom County League Championship. This team showed good poise, and with many starters back, should be strong next year. After being ranked 4th in the state for most of the season, Lynden lost to Sultan 12-0 in the playoff. Lynden players honored by being selected to the Whatcom County All-Star Teams were: BELLINGHAM HERALD SELECTIONS LYNDEN TRIBUNE SELECTIONS Mark Morgan-OL (Coaches’ Choice) Keith Louws-DL, OL Mark Morgan-OL Kurt Langstraat-E Gary Allen-OL Leif Erickson-RB Craig Seutz-RB Gary Allen-OL Benji Lange-K, P Rick Holt-LB Keith Louws-DL Benji Lange-P Rick Holt-LB There were ten Lions picked for honorable mention honors. The Lynden Varsity Volleyball Team ended the season with a 6-4 league record, and third place in county. The 1979 season could be the “year of the two point decision’’. Two points in our final match at the district tournament in Mt. Vernon was the determining factor as to whether we participated in the state tournament. With the third game score at 14-14 against Granite Falls, Lynden lost the match 16-14 and also a chance at playing in the state tournament. Our Varsity team was young, with only two seniors playing, Kalise Linde and Leslie Thom. Captains for 1979 were Abi Elenbaas and Shelley Nelson. Shelley was also Most Valuable Player for the season. The team members elected two people to share the Inspirational Award; they were Julie Vannice and Rose Alexander. The junior varsity and ““C’’ teams both had winning seasons with a 7-5 match record and a 11-6 game record respectively. After being cut to eight players by injuries and people leaving, the remaining Lions showed loyalty to the team and love for the game by taking the court every Tuesday and Thursday believing in themselves and out there to win. The overtime victory at Meridian was definitely the high point of the season. A come from behind second half and a perfectly executed three minutes of overtime. It was the season captured in a single game ... the never give up attitude of My girls. This team may not have won a lot of games, but they won victories and successes just the same. They are one of the steps to the top of the mountain for Lynden’s Girls Basketball. We'll get there, and soon! And this year’s team will share in those victories of the future. SENIOR STARS and AWARDS Kalise Linde- Team Captain, Inspirational Award, and Top Rebounder. Kalise was our team leader and a driving force behind our continuing positive attitude. Joy Posthumus- With Joy’s clutch one-second shot we won our overtime game. Such poise and aim! There is not a player around with more desire. Leslie Thom- Top Free-Throw shooter. When Leslie’s long shot was hitting, the whole team hit. A go-getter from the starting whistle to the game’s end. SPECIAL AWARDS Shelley Nelson- Most Valuable Player Award, Top Scorer, and Whatcom County League Second Team. Hope Eigenbrood-Most Improved Player Award. JUNIOR VARSITY The team had their most successful season yet, 11-4. They are our players of the future, the top of the mountain, the players under the rainbow. VARSITY BASKETBALL Standing L to R - Vince Blauser, Mitch Smit, Benji Lange, Greg Stoffer, Kurt Langstraat, Brad Vanderwerff, Leif Erickson, Rick Holt, Darrell Jansen, Rod Johnston, Mark Maberry, John Barnes, Kneeling L to R - Manager; Rod VanderWerff, Coach; Jake Maberry, Asst. Coach; Rollie DeKoster, Manager; Eddie Wilson. This past year, personally, has been one of the more gratifying years for me as a coach at Lynden High School. Starting slowly, losing two early league games, the team “‘jelled’’ to win the tough Whatcom County League Championship. The Northwest District Tournament proved to be difficult and exciting. First opponent, Langley, from the Cascade League, was soundly defeated 82-47. Our next opponent, Meridian, was defeated 52-40 in a tough, hard-fought defensive game; and, more importantly, assured Lynden a place in the State Tournament. The District Championship game between Lynden and Kings Garden of Seattle, was hard-fought with King’s pulling out a 63-51 win. The State Tournament was the highlight of the season. In the game No. 1, Lynden defeated Leavenworth in a thrilling overtime game, 71-70. The second game with Goldendale was a heartbreaker. The Lions lost 67-64. The third day we defeated Newport 76-71. In game No. 4, Colfax won giving Lynden 7th place. For the tenth time in tournament history, LYNDEN PLACED! The three graduating seniors--Brad VanderWerff, Kurt Langstraat, and Benji Lange, did an outstanding job. They were fine players and citizens. Special honors were accorded to two players. Senior Kurt Langstraat for the second consecutive year, was selected to the All-County; and this year--All-District team. Leif Erickson was selected to the All-County, District, and the All-State teams. This team completed its season with a 19 win - 8 loss record--Whatcom County Championship, Northwest District Tournament - 2nd place, Washington State Tournament - 7th place. A GOOD YEAR! Rollie DeKoster’s fine Junior Varsity team ended the season with an outstanding record--18 wins - 2 losses. Although we lose the three fine Seniors in Benji Lange, Brad VanderWerff, and our leader, Kurt Langstraat, with many Varsity players back for their final year, the excellent J.V. team filling in, and several Junior High prospects--I have great expectations for the Lynden Basketball Team for 1980-81. 44 Boy’s Basketball J.V. Three members qualified for the state meet in Wenatchee: Brad VanderWerff- High jump, Darrell Jansen- Triple jump, and Greg Stoffer- Triple jump. With many performers returning, next year’s team should show continued improvement begun by this fine group. | | A r ¥. Back Row L to R: Coach; Heidi Vanderhulst, Peggy Ullerup, Darcy White, Sandy Kenworthy, Jan Hillestad, Jodi Tjoelker, Sheryl Slotemaker, Lisa Gienger. 2nd Row: Manager; Tina Eveland, Chris Matter, Vicky White, Joan Beck, Eva Alaniz, Barb Estabrook, Leslie Thom. Bottom Row: Karen Grafmyre, Kerry Dodge, Debbie Ullerup, Donna Crabtree. How do you measure the success of a season? Do you check the win-loss record, or ask how many qualified for district and or state? Should those things even be considered? In relationship to Girls’ track this year, No. The girls have had a successful season, if you look at individual performances. Four girls have . broken school records and all have improved times and distances greatly. | How does the future look? Hopeful. Five plan on joining Cross-Country in the fall and most of | the rest will return for another season of track. Every year there is a need for greater numbers; therefore my wish for the team next year is for all to continue, many more to join with the ‘ dedication to help all of you to stick out the season. Class Of 1980 The annual staff of 1980 wishes the best of luck to the annual staff of 19S Lynden, WA. Lynden Transport nd Milky Way 354-2101 Wh wed i) LY BNO Well, this is it; the 1980 Simba yearbook. I hope you enjoyed it. There is a lot of time and work put into this book; a lot more than I expected when I became editor; but, like all other editors, I managed to get the job done, with of course, the help of other people, whom I would like to give thanks to. First off, I would like to thank Mrs. Thomas, our advisor for helping me a lot through the year. Next, I would like to thank Carolyn Price, Donette Studios, and Mrs. Knudsen for their help with our photographs. I would also like to thank the staff for their co-operation, and last but not least, I would like to thank Kalise Linde and Terri Larson, who were not really in the class, but devoted a lot of their time to work on the annual. Thnaks again; and, to next year’s Editor: GOOD- LUCK!! lw 2i uly tion S-227 ee os ————— Eee teres Wws oe z Side 2 in arbet PA SA I wale 5 men oh BOT eS OLN 4 “Mf go tl a am ae, as = A a Ss ee Ma.
