The organization, which is Statewide and nationwide, shares ideas and concerns with other clubs within the region. This fall we attended an area meeting at Sultan to share club ideas and meet other club members. In March, Lynden will host another such meeting of FHA members to discuss accomplishments during the year. Traditionally the FHA sponsors the Sweetheart Assembly on February 14th which honors students who have outstanding personal traits ranging from scholastic aptitude to the nicest smile. The club is also tentatively planning to revive the annual Mothers’ Tea in May. This school year was spent raising inoney to build up a rather depleted treasury. Activities included car washes and bake sales. | Future Homemakers of America 19 SAMASOON Back row (I-r): Brent Nonhoff, Greg VanderWerff, Jon Garberg, Keith Shelly, Rod Johnston, Brad VanderWerff, Ken Knudsen, Gary Drost, Ron Honcoop, Kelly Pugh, Dan Bosman, Keith Louws. 2nd row: Keith Kayser, John Postma, Bill Cartwright, Dan Olson, Allen Dawkins, Jim Clay, Carl Larson, Larry Shelly, Larry Hilmer, Mark Fullner, Denise Bosman, Gordon Vlas, Rick VerSteeg Derrick DeBoom, Don DeVries. 3rd row: Connie Crabtree, Brenda Martin, Debbie VerSteeg, Kim Tyler, Monica Krueger, Chris Parkhurst, Cheryl Clay, Debbie Clay, Leslie Thom, Bill Knutzen, Dennis Bosman, Brian Knudsen, Kathy Price, Barb Coffman, Karma Linde. 4th row: Seena Hansen, Kerry Dodge, Karla TenKley, Lisa Powers, Candi Crabtree, Cheryl Kraft, Jenny Crabtree, Rhonda Ogilvie, Sara Garberg, Meredith St. John, Kasey Birdsey. Major performances included Fall, Winter, Spring, 3rd Annual Combined, and Pops Concerts. The 2nd Annual Fall Jazz Festival hosted by Lynden’s Jazz Ensemble featured a guest appearance by the W.W.U. Jazz Lab Band. Lynden Choir hosted its first Festival this fall with both Meridian and Mt. Baker attending. Jewelry sales, skate-a-thon, and other fund raisers helped finance a Concert Tour in Eastern Washington. Students were involved for four days, performing at other high schools, along with sight seeing throughout the Eastern Washington countryside. Spring activities included Sob Ensemble Concert, Music Boosters Concert, and the Blossomtime and Farmers’ Day parades. ‘‘Moms Dads’’ Banquet and an “‘Awards” Dessert were two social events shared by music students and their parents this year. I would like to thank this year’s music students for all the extra time and effort they gave to produce such fine musical groups. Your professional attitude made it a pleasure to work with you. This gave us a record of seven wins and three losses, and a tie for second in the league. The Lions started off the season with a big 34-6 win over Mt. Baker, followed by a close 10-8 win over Blaine. We then lost 20-3 on a wet Nooksack field. In the next two games the Lions defeated Meridan 20-0, and Mt. Baker 7-6. In the seven to six win over Mt. Baker the Lions lost three year starter Mike Hill for the rest of the season with a knee injury. With the loss of Mike Hill, the Lions lost to Blaine 14-3, but came roaring back to defeat Nooksack 33-6, and fought off Lynden Christian 2-0 in the wettest game of all time. In the final game of the season, Lynden lost 30-22 and double overtime. the loss was very bitter, as Brian Anderson scored in the second overtime, only to have the touchdown called back on a penalty. Awards were won by: Brian Anderson-high tackle, most valuable player, and outstanding offensive back; Mark Morgan-offensive line; Keith Louws-defensive line; John Weeks-defensive back; Keith Shelly-spirit award. Jim Jaime won the Elmer Clarkston Inspirational Award. The J.V. team went undefeated for the eighth year straight. This gives coach Terry DeValois a record of 50 wins and O defeats for his J.V. teams. hy AY Ao ii, 8by 33 Zi A ud a, AA a? wT = a. LYNDEN LIONS BASKETBALL SEASON 1978-79 After graduating most of a team that won 26 of 27 games in the 1977-78 season, this year’s team was faced with a rebuilding year. After a slow start, winning only two of their first eight games, the young Lions started to improve. One of their big wins was a victory over eventual state champion, COLFAX! The team went on to gain third place in the Whatcom County League and earn a berth in the Northwest District Tournament. Lynden played one of its better games of the year by defeating Kings Garden, then disappointed by losses to Lynden Christian and Coupeville. Lynden would not be in the State Tournament! Rollie DeKoster’s Junior Varsity completed a fine season, winning the J.V. league and compiling a fine 16 won - 4 loss record. Graduating seniors who contributed to the team are Larry Whitman, Jeff Eigenbrood, and Dwight Young. With the steady improvement of the Varsity, plus excellent Junior Varsity and Junior High players to help—LYNDEN SHOULD HAVE A VERY FINE TEAM FOR THE 1979-80 SEASON!! It’s about time. I’m sure Mr. Vannice would agree, and Mrs. Thomas. I’ve always said, however, better late than never. And if, in fact you don’t agree with my philosphy, and you are a little upset about the late arrival of these annuals, I challenge you to do a better job next year. Problem is, you most likely could. It’s been tough being editor. In fact it’s been a regular pain. And I could never have done it without the support of a lot of people. Therefore I shall take this time to give deserving credit. For the lovely photography, I'd like to thank Rene Smith, Brent Nonhoff; school photographers, Gale Johnson, Don Rubenack; Donette Studio photographers. Also under the category of photography, I’d like to thank Mrs. Knudsen for her patience and help. My staff also should be commended for their work, Debbie Jones, Dwayne Crabtree, Julie Dahlgren, Liz McKinney, Ingrid Doctor, Lisa VanMersbergen, Kim VanWeerdhuizen, Brien McCracken, Mike VanBerkum, and especially Jo Smith. She was great about staying after school to finish deadlines. We had some great conversations, my staff and I. We talked about everything from my cousin. Ask Julie Dahlgren and the packing of fudge in the candy stores. Ask Dwayne Crabtree. They also kept me supplied with cheese and crackers and Rothchilds. . My very special thank-you goes to my mom. She has patience and understanding of ten people. Another special thanks goes to Mr. Vannice. He has even more patience than my mom. When I saw him once this summer, and told him I was trying my best to get things done and he said ‘I know’, I just about hugged him. But the biggest THANK-YOU of all goes to Mrs. Thomas. She knew me enough not to nag. And I respect her for that. I also think the change she has accomplished is great! And I hope she continues. To next years editor I will my prescription for valium. If you’re smart you won’t accept the job. Anyway happy headaches. Now the yearbook is officially yours, student body, and faculty members. ENJOY!! 1979 Editor, Peggy Krenz p.s.
