After years of having to worry about raising more and more of the school district’s budget at the local level, our legislature has finally responded to the demands of the electorate, and we are now gradually headed toward almost full state funding. In addition to this pleasant situation, we are enjoying working with a top- notch management team which works well together, and with the students, faculty, and parents. MG En eg OUR PRINCIPAL TALKS The students and faculty of Lynden High School have, over the years, established a proud tradition of leadership and accomplishment. This year has been one in the tradition of Lynden High School. Individuals and groups have achieved goals which will provide many memories which may be relived by paging through this yearbook. Congratulations to the students and faculty of Lynden High School. i OUR SUPERINTENDENT TALKS The 1977-78 school year has been a good year. The accomplishments of the students and staff have been outstanding and rewarding. The rewards and accomplishments that the senior class and other students attained have a positive influence on our schools and community. The Board of Directors and I express our congratulations to the graduating seniors and their parents. We trust that your educational efforts in the Lynden schools has prepared and provided a foundation for future life. My sincere congratulations to each person who has made 1977-78 a successful year. It’s been a great experience, and I feel that I’ve learned a lot when it comes to dealing with people. I give a very special thanks to our dear principal Mr. Vannice, whose tired, haggard appearance had inspired me to endeavor to do my best at whatever task set before me. Bonnie Erickson ASB President ASB TREASURER To the Student Body of LHS: I would like to thank you for allowing me the privilege of being ASB Treasurer this past year. This year has | been rewarding in many ways. It has been a challenge as well as a very educational experience. I would like to 2 thank Mr. Vannice for being so patient with me, and Cindy Leaf for helping me when I got behind. I wish the best of luck to the next ASB Treasurer and I hope his year will be as good as mine. Delores DeKam ASB Treasurer 1977-1978 ASB SECRETARY As ASB Secretary, this past year has been a great experience for me. I worked on certain situations that I never would have experienced if not voted into this office. I hope I have lived up to your expectations. If not, 1 I leave this office to the next person and hope they can do better. I tried to do my job as best I could and ony wish I could have done more. A special thanks goes to Mr. Vannice and Mr. Helt for putting up with us, and for their time and help. I would also like to thank the student body for giving me the chance to return to LHS what it gave to me. The Lynden football team had another great season, winning both Whatcom County and Northwest Washington District Championships. In the past six years Lynden has won the league and district championship twice, has two co-championships, and has placed second in league play the other two years. The Lions opened the season with a smashing 47-6 win over Mt. Baker, followed up with a 35-0 win over Blaine, and a 40-0 win over Nooksack. From then on, things got a little close as we beat Lynden Christian 15-8 and won 3-0 over Meridian on Tom Lange’s field goal. The Lions were then upset 35-14 by Mt. Baker, but came back the next week with a 9-6 overtime win over Blaine with Tom Lange again kicking a field goal in overtime. The Lions went on to defeat Nooksack 15-14, Lynden Christian 28-12 and wrapped up the championship with a strong 28-0 victory over Meridian. With this, the Lions finished 9-1, scored 234 points, and allowed the opposition just 81 points. In the quarter finals of the state playoffs, Lynden met Sultan and beat them 14-6 to advance to the semifinals of the state playoffs. In the semifinals, the Lions met Winlock, the defending state champions. On a field completely covered with snow and ice, with the temperature at 29°F. Although the smaller, underdog Lynden team outplayed Winlock, it did not score. Winlock won 6-0 to advance to the state finals. The Lions did a great job and ended up in fourth place. Five Lynden players were selected for the Whatcom County All-Star Team. They were: Tom Lange, Brian Reimer, Mike Hill, Brent Rutgers and John Vanleperen. At the annual Football Banquet, Rick DeGraaff was given the Elmer Clarkson Award, Most Inspirational Player Award; Wade DeJong, the Spirit Award; John Vanleperen, the High Tackle Award, the Most Valuable Player Award and the Outstanding Defensive Lineman Award. Defensive Back Award was given to Brent Rutgers; Offensive Lineman, Jeff Jones; and Offensive Back, to Mike Hill. : The Lions are looking forward to a good season next year as many lettermen will return. For the seventh year in a row our Junior Varsity Team has remained undefeated. This reserve force should also add to our success next year. For some, the years may have been hard; for others, enjoyable, but all have succeeded in our own way. As we leave the security of high school life we can look forward hopefully to our future in the adult world. Many of this class will go on to further their education; some will work, and some will raise families. All of us, however, will have the commonadackground of having come from one of the finest schools in the state. The Senior Class of L.H.S. has had a varied and productive year. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to Hiners: even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtues there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and’ everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the councel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of Spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with rae You are achild of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Everyone enjoyed finger hash browns, sausage, scrambled eggs, and other McDonald breakfast specialties. Next stop was at the Anacortes Ferry Dock. We had a long wait for the ferry, but we kept ourselves busy throwing frisbees in an almost vacant parking lot. The ferry ride proved interesting to most; for some it was their first ride, for others, an exciting card game, or just the pleasure of looking over the water, trying to figure out which island was which. 108 We finally reached our destination, Moran State Park, shortly after noon, where we played volleyball, hiked (courtesy of Mr. D.V.), swam, relaxed in the sun, threw frisbees, and finally ate! A bus trip followed, taking us to the Orcas Ferry Dock, and from there another fun ferry ride to the mainland. A quiet bus trip brought us back to Lynden at 9:30 p.m. Our fun-loving chaperones included: Jim Helgath, Donna Waldemar, Mr. and Mrs. Boice and Brita, Mr. and Mrs. DeValois and Michelle and Kim, Mrs. Cline, Mrs. Birdsey, and Leslie Kipp. TUESDAY, MAY 30, 1978 — 8:00 P.M. But, each of us knows that this annual could not have been completed without Mrs. Thomas, who was along with us every minute. A big thank-you to you, Mrs. Thomas. Also, a special thanks to the most understanding person I know, Mr. Vannice. To Donette Studios, Mrs. Knudsen, and Gale Johnson, who always seemed to be at more than one place at a time. I wish continued success for the 1978-79 school year to Peggy, as next year’s editor. She will need the full cooperation from everyone again next year. Our Memories ... special meanings to us—this is what our book is about. We, the staff, want this edition to be even more meaningful five-ten-twenty-and even more years from now. These Memories... to look back at many times for LEARNING... for FRIENDS 2e.70r AlMCE TU ome for ACTIVITIES ... for Remembering—YOUR MEMORIES. 1977-78 Editor SY = SS 7 v .
