The 1976-77 school year was a very successful one for the Lynden High School Music Department. Our schedule included Fall, Christmas, Winter, Spring and Pops Concerts; also the L.H.S. Band and the L.C.S. Choir combined for a concert to raise money for music scholarships for both schools. This was the first time our two schools had ever joined together in staging a musical event. Our money-raising activities included making and selling apple cider, tying raspberries, and a Listen-A-Thon. This year the band traveled to Tacoma to support the basketball team at the State Tournament. We rented a house for the week and cooked our own meals to save money. This year a number of students were chosen to participate in the San Juan Music Educators Honor Band and.Honor Choir. In addition to this, Lori Shuler was chosen to sing in the All-Northwest Choir. Two smaller groups were formed, a Dixieland Band and a Stage Band. The Dixieland Band was a seven member combo that played old time Dixie-jazz music. The stage band consisted of about twenty people and played all kinds of jazz. The music department was fortunate enough to have two student teachers to assist Mr. Evans. Parke Hall, an excellent tenor sax player, for Fall Quarter. And Leslie Styer, a first-rate French Horn player, for Spring Quarter. And as always, many, many thanks to Mr. Evans, whose hard work, extra hours, and dedication made this year a memorable one for the L.H.S. music department. The season started off on a sour note as LCHS defeated Lynden 8-0. This was the first time LCHS had beaten Lynden in five years. Lynden then blasted Blaine 29-0 and Nooksack 12-0. Mt. Baker was held scoreless aS Lynden won 24-0. The Lions were handed their second defeat at the hands of Meridian 16-7. This came after Lynden led for three quarters of play. It also marked the first time in five years Lynden had lost to Meridian. In the second meeting with LCHS, the Lions crushed LC-28-0, then dumped Blaine 17-7. The third loss of the season came at the hands of Nooksack 18-6. In a game played at Mt. Baker, Lynden walked over the Mounties 30-14. This set up the rematch with Meridian, who needed this win to tie for first place with Nooksack. The Lions, with little to gain but pride, trampled the Trojans 22-0. It was a sweet win for the team. With the bitterly close losses to LCHS and Meridian, Lynden held together as a team. Although this was not as good a season as we hoped for, we did well. Our defense was the best in the league allowing only 65 p oints scored. We held opponents scoreless in five games. Seven Lions were selected for the All-League Team. On defense, Randy Kraght, Rick Honcoop, Brent Rutgers, and John Vanleperen were selected; on offense Steve Groen, Wade Bailey and kicker Tom Lange were selected. Rick Honcoop, a three year letterman who started every game for three years was selected for the M.V.P. Award, The Elmer Clarkson Inspirational Player Award, and the High Tackle Award. Brian Reimer was given the Spirit Award. For the sixth year in a row, the Lynden J.V. team went undefeated. The 7th and 8th graders also went undefeated. Lynden Lions should be bidding for the county title next year. I seriously doubt that'll work! All Right! Managers keep the stats. The team was undefeated in the Whatcom County League a feat never acco mplished by any team in twenty-five years of league play. Lynden defeated Kings Garden and Darrington in the Northwest District Tournament, to qualify for the State Tournament. In the finals, after coming from twelve points behind, Lynden lost its first game to a fine Lakeside team 68 to 65. Lynden had a tough opener against Pomeroy in the State Tournament, but came out on top by a score of 76 to 63. The next opponent was undefeated Cashmere. After being behind by thirteen we eo = points, the Lions clawed back to send the game into overtime. After two shots Robert Eigenbrood, Jr. - seemingly in, Lynden lost to the eventual State Champions in a heartbreaker by Center two points! Friday’s game against Castle Rock was almost a repeat of the day | before. Castle Rock won in the last second by two points. The 1977 team averaged 72.4 points per games, the opponent 53.6, winning 23, losing 3! . Seniors who will be graduating are: Jay Kobberstad, Rick Honcoop, Randy Kraght, and Dennis Hill. Rick Honcoop was selected Inspirational Player. Dennis Hill, one of Lynden’s finest players, won the Captain, Sportsmanship, Rebounding and Foul Shooting Awards. Needless to say, they will all be missed. And what about next year? The Lions goal for next year will be to finish the job that was just beyond our reach this year. We have four starters back, Mark VanAchte, Brent Rutgers, Rick DeGraaff, and Robert Eigenbrood, plus first line players in Dale Barnes and Ray Alexander. There are no short cuts to success! It can be done, with harder work and determination! 1977-78, Lynden can complete its goal! The J.V. team, coached by Rollie DeKoster, compiled a fine 18-2 record, winning the J.V. Championship. Highlight of the season was the annual trip to Eastern Washington where we defeated Manson and lost to Omak. The team also went to Seattle to see the Mariners play twice. The seniors were: catcher Rick Honcoop, pitchers Wade Bailey, Dennis Hill and Mark Kleindel. Wade also played 1st base, Dennis short stop, and Mark played shortstop and left field. Steve Groen played 2nd base. These five boys were selected to play in the all star game. Ken Shagren and Clyde Libolt shared duties in right field and did an excellent job. Juniors were: Rick DeGraaff, Brent Rutgers, Ray Alexander, and Jeff Schiller. The Most Inspirational Player Award went to Rick Honcoop. Wade Bailey was selected as the Most Valuable Player and also won the batting championship with a .397 average. This is the second year Wade has won the batting championship. For the first time in five years, Lynden did not make the State Play-Offs. We had 2 disappointing losses in district finals. SIMBA STAFF 128 s AY A a eT You never really leave a place you love; part of it you take with you, leaving part of you behind. Now that the 1977 Simba has been completed, we, the editors hand it over to you we hope that its contents will hold many happy memories for you. We would like to give a special thanks to the staff, Myla Helgath, Carol Rodney, Debbie Van Weerdhuizen, Vicki Jorissen, and Val Schick. Bringing this annual to you has been a big job, and, without these five girls, it couldn’t have been completed. Each one of them deserves much credit. A big thanks goes to Bonnie Erickson, a great helper, who did all of our artwork. Another person who contributed a great deal of time and patience and deserves much more than a thank-you is Gale Johnson, our photographer from Donnette Studios. Also a big thanks to our school photographer Korey Judson. Last but by no means least is Mrs. Thomas, our advisor. She has devoted many hours of her time to help put this yearbook together. She did a SUPER-FANTASTIC job, and we'll never forget her. Sincerely, Kathy Blauser and Caryn Smit, Co-Editors ail f ; i
