The Lions had another great season. The Lions shared the county championship with Nooksack with a 9-1 record. But unfortunately the Lions lost in a 2 quarter playoff to see who would go to the state playoffs. This season there was a change in the schedule. Instead of playing eight games with three practice games, the teams in the county played ten games with no practice games. So the Lions had to be ready for the first one. They were! They started off with a 24-0 trouncing of crosstown rivals Lynden Christian. The Lion’s only loss of the regular season was a defeat by Nooksack 13-12. The highlight of the season came when the mighty Lions beat Nooksack 15-12 to tie for the championship. Scott Rutgers was named the most valuable player and shared the high tackle award with Tim Vonk. Jim Taubenheim won the inspirational award and Don Bittle won the spirit award. Five seniors were named to the all-county first team offense and defense teams. Tim Vonk was voted most valuable defensive player of the league and was named to the All-State team. For the fifth year in a row the JV’s went undefeated, and the 7th and 8th grade also went undefeated. With excellent coaching and good talent coming up, Lynden should be again bidding for the county crown again next year. Good Luck! Sincerely, Monte Maberry 26 Tim Vonk, Our ALL-STATE Football Star! To review the season, Lynden started out by playing outstanding non-legue teams such as Ferndale, Arlington, and Monroe, defeating each in preparation for the tough Whatcom County League. After many exciting League contests, Lynden won the Whatcom County Championship, and thus went into the Northwest District Tournament as the No. | team from Whatcom County. With two straight victories, one over Kings Garden, and one over Nooksack Valley, Lynden played the Christian School for the championship, and in one of the most thrilling games ever played in the District Tournament, Lynden’s All State Guard, Scott Rutgers, hit a jump shot at the buzzer, in the second overtime, to give Lynden its 7th Northwest District Championship. The score, 56 to 55. In the State Tournament at Tacoma, Lynden won its first game from a tough defensive Washougal team by the score of 46 to 41. Game two, the opponent was unbeaten South Bend. After a first half deadlock, South Bend won the hard fought contest 57 to 44. The third day Lynden defeated one of the better teams in the state meet, the Colfax Bulldogs by the score of 64 to 58. Saturday night the Lions downed a tough Morton team 57 to 50. And with that victory a well earned 4th place in the State Tournament. Seven Seniors will be lost via graduation. Needless to say they will be difficult to replace. Mike Lewis, Lynden’s 6th man, who on many occasions sparked the team with clutch baskets, Gareth Bolt, outstanding rebounder and defensive player and good scorer. Scott Rutgers, leading scorer and rebounder, voted to the County, District and All State squads. A truly complete playe r! Monte Maberry, fine team player, good scorer and defensive player, one of the leaders in assists, good all around player. The other seniors, Jim Taubenheim, Ladd Shumway, and Dean VanderY acht, although not playing as much as the others, were just as important in making the team a succsss. With regulars Dennis Hill and Mark VanAchte back as starters from our fine team this year, plus an outstanding J.V. squad with a record of 19 wins and | loss, Lynden should be back fighting again for County, District and State Championships! Needless to say, I expect great things from these boys. A “Big Thanks” to the two coaches who gave so much of themselves in every way to make the team a success, Rollie DeKoster and Howard Heppner. We had more people turn out and stick with it than any other year before us. We will say good-bye to four seniors who have done an outstanding job for this school. Namely - Captain Bob Bonsen, Jim Powers, Scott Pitman, and Buzz Jones. Next year we will have returning five juniors, four sophomores, and eight freshmen. Clyde Libolt had a fantastic season this year going undefeated until reaching state. He was the only wrestler this year that made it to state. We look for even a better performance from him next year. Good Luck Next Year Clyde. From all the wrestlers we'd like to thank the matmaids; Lori Shuler, Lisa Cartwright, Molly Maberry, Jana Langstraat and Barb Gussen, who did a great job with keeping our spirits up. I would also like to express my deep feeling of greatfulness to the student body of L.H.S. for giving me the opportunity to work for them, and above all the chance to make many lasting friends at L.H.S. Sincerely, Ladd Shumway This year has been an enjoyable one. Through the Student Council many things were accomplished. Several amendments to the school constitution were instituted for the next year. The “General” school business ran very smoothly. There isn’t much you can’t say about this year’s Student Council. They were a great bunch of people to work with and I enjoyed every minute of it. About the only other thing I can say 1s that I envy next year’s Vice-President and I hope they enjoy their year as much asI have enjoyed mine. Gareth Bolt I would really like to thank the student body for giving me the chance to be your A.S.B. Secretary. It was an experience that I will never forget. I would especially like to thank Ladd and Gareth for giving me the agenda five minutes before a Student Council meeting. Debbie Polinder I have enjoyed my year as A.S.B. Students from the United States also have the opportunity to go abroad either for a year or fora summer. Vesa Nissinen was our foreign exchange student this year. To raise money this year the students had a bake sale, swept the gym for home basketball games and sponsored the International Dinner which was held April 23rd in the cafeteria. There were over 200 people present including foreign students from many different countries. The talent show featured the talent of several foreign students and some of our own talent. During the AFS weekend in which about 40 foreign students stayed with L.H.S. student, everyone went to the plowing match and to Vancouver, B.C. to Stanley Park and sight-seeing. It was a very successful weekend. Brigette Vesa are welcomed to Lynden. We attempt to provied information for all varieties of readers in addition to the school news. The Lion’s Truth Staff worked hard this year to publish six issues. They put much time and effort into a tough job that does not always seem to be appreciated. Our paper is supported by our dependency on local merchants to supply us with advertising. With advertising being our only source of income, we are grateful and appreciate the merchants very much for their support. There is much preparation before a paper is finally distributed. Various staff members are involved in: writing, proofreading, typing, and lay-out organization. The paper’s final preparations are done at the Lynden Tribune where it is published. ——_ First Semester Staff Co-Editors (52... The unique L.H.S. Choir Band and Choir for ’75-’76 was an exciting experience. We had a lot of new people in music this year, andI would say that they liked it a lot. Some of the people had never read a note of music before, but they seemed to get along fine. 1976 was the year we graduated with America, and it was a kickin’ affair in many ways. First off, Gary Evans returned to the halls of good old Lynden High. If there was anything in the world more solid to build a future on than a special levy, Lynden would have an outrageious music department in a very short time. Daily life was interesting. We had the opportunity to get into Barbershop singing, and with lots of friendly help, we came up with two Barbershop Quartets. One of them, ‘““The Merry Misfits”, won second place and $200 in a Barbershop singing contest. Lynden sent four people to the Music In May festival, which is held in Forest Grove, Oregon, every other year. They were Keith Burke and Jon Felix singing in the choir, and Jesper Pfiel and Renee Kraft playing in the band. Lynden also sent Lori Shuler to All State Choir in Wenatcheel She did a great job as usual. 1976 was a grat year for music. We all owe a great deal of gratitude to a great director, Gary Evans, and also to Holly Bertran who started every one out. With any luck at all, they'll both be around for the next show. Money for this event was raised by various events such as a listen-a-thon, lasagne feed and concerts. The first stop on the tour was Leavenworth, after which they traveled to the Thunderbird Motel to spend the night. The same night they did a concert at the Cashmere Methodist Church. The next day had stops at Wenatchee, Chelan and Pateros. That night the whole group slept on the gym floor at Pateros. The next morning found them on the way to Tonasket for another concert, and then to Oliver, B.C. for the final show. The final night was spent at Manning Provincial Park. The next morning, after a minor bus breakdown, they headed to Harrison Hot Springs for a swim, after which two buses full of tired people returned home. A great deal of thanks is due to Gary Evans, the bus drivers, truck drivers and chaperones, who all helped make this tour a great success. 121 Secrets in the corner. Bringing this annual to you has been a big job with a lot of headaches, but we feel it was worth it and we hope you do too. ; A lot of credit is due to many people. I'd first like to say thanks to Kathy Blauser and Caryn Smit. Without these two I probably wouldn’t have made it. They were always there willing to help, and I’m sure they will do a great job on the annual next year. Another person who did more than anyone will ever know is Gale Johnson from Donnette Studios, who put up with us and gave us some great pictures. And also to Tyler Bennett who helped with the pictures. A big thanks also goes to Gareth Bolt who contributed his talents by doing all the artwork. I'd also like to thank Kris Johnson and Carol Verduin who helped out during the first semester. And last but not least is Mrs. Harvey who was our advisor and friend. I don’t think we could have asked for a better one. And now I give to you, the students, this annual, and hope that you will look through its pages with happy memories of days spent at Lyn den High School. Sincerely, Kathy Kayser, Editor J Sa - RE A pp na et DEAN BE ROO Oe pe EE A ee A PR ASC Se abies bine hoes yeahh ASH NA LOR REe,
