VaRSIty fOotBall A fine combination of talent, coaching and support led to a roaring season, marred only by one defeat. The Lions stayed in the race until the final league game in which we were upset by Nooksack 14-8. This came after the Lions had defeated Meridian twice by scores of 27-0, 21-0, Mt. Baker twice by 24-7, 13- 12, Blaine 48-12, Nooksack 17-7, and Lynden Christian by a score of 20-0. In a crossover game with the Cascade league the mighty Lions finished their season by walking over Lakeside with a final score of 37-13. Lynden, beyond a shadow of a doubt, had an excel- lent season. Seven of its members were named to the all-county team. A lot of the success is due to a hard working coach- ing staff. This staff was composed of Head Coach Mr. Rollie De Koster, and assistant coaches Mr. Rob Lonborg, Mr. Ross Boice, and Mr. Terry De Valois. The Elmer Clarkson Inspiration Award went to Randy Bajema. For the second year ina row the Most Valuable Player Award was presented to Randy Honcoop. Terry De Koster received the High Tackle Award. The Spirit Award was given to junior Dan Crabtree. With the superb coaching staff and undefeated jun- ior varsity squad combined with the remaining var- sity team the Lions are looking forward to another victorious year. 19 21 to victory JUNIOR varsity footBall BACK ROW (L-R): Andy Zamudio, Don Bittle, Gary Honcoop, Don Roe, Scott Rutgers, Rick Ellis, Jim Taubenheim, Dean Vander Yacht, MIDDLE ROW: Coach Boice, Monte Maberry, Gareth Bolt, Doug Helgath, Bob Bonsen, Scott Pitman, Mark Rice, Chris Rehm, Coach De Valois, FRONT ROW: Head Coach De Koster, Manager Mark Whitmore, Randy Kraght, Rick Honcoop, Korey Judson, Jay Kobbersted, Wade Bailey, Coach Lonborg. At the All-Sports Banquet, Dave Jaime was awarded the captains a- ward and Dwight Crabtree received the inspirational award in Cross Country. They were well deserved. Although we were outsized by almost every team, the boys always gave an excellent account of themselves. The team made up for the lack of size by excellent shooting, good team speed, and good old fashioned hustle! Outstanding games were turned in against non-league opponents, Arlington and Lake Stevens. In league compe- tition, our better games were against fine Mt. Baker and Blaine teams. Although fighting in the toughest league in the state, our boys won a spot in the Northwest District Tournament. Here we jelled to play our best basketball of the season, defeating fine Lakeside and Sultan teams. In our last game with Blaine, it looked as if a State Tournament berth was ours, but with a bad bounce of the ball, Lynden lost a tough one, by a single point. Outstanding seniors lost by graduation are Randy Honcoop elected Inspirational wimer, Hustler Randy Ellis and Terry DeKoster, Mr. Hustler and Defense . Marty Maberry and Ned Vander Ploeg were our top scorers, and both were selected to the All District team! We will miss these fine young men! Under the excellent coaching of Mr. DeKoster with the J. V. and Mr. DeValois with the junior high team, basket- ball at Lynden has a bright future. Finally, I shall not forget the Team of 1974. Although not a big physical team--they played with the most impor- tant thing of all - A TEAM WITH A BIG HEART. Comments by Jake Maberry The Classic Lion Pass Routine Jeff DeGraaff Lays One Up! Ride 'em cowboy! Stage Crew: (from L-R) Norman Hein, Cindy Smith, Brenda Ronhaar, Jill TenKley, Kris Morgan, This year's senior class presented a three- act play entitled 'Lemonade Joe Rides Again . It was a child's play about a young boy named Tommy who jumped into the T.V. (like Alice In Wonderland who entered the mirror) to save his favorite television hero, Lemonade Joe, During the course of his adventures he encountered characters who in real life were his mother, father, two horrible neighbors, a teacher, and a friend. He also met two sissy outlaws who alternated characteristics with Horrible Hester and Mean Minnie, the two outlaw sisters. The show was high-lighted by the delightful horse, Arabelle, who along with Dr. Mirakle put together his show of wonders. There was also a network foul-up and Spaceboy appeared on the scene. The play ended with Tommy saving Lemonade Joe and leaping through the television back to reality. Hester speaks her mind. They gave concerts at various high schools and Wenatchee Community College. The group left Lynden High May 6 at 6:30 in the morning. The first stop was Mt. Vernon High School, and then on to Sultan High School. Quincy was the final stop for the day. An eight o'clock concert was given that night at the high school. The next day it was on to Spokane and Expo 74. There, under the direction of Mr. Dave Reff, the band gave a morning concert and the choir gave an afternoon concert. Most of the day was spent looking over the World's fair site and all its exhibits from around the world. Leaving Spokane on May 8, the band and choir headed for Wenatchee to give yet another performance. Before leaving Wenatchee, the members mobbed McDonalds for a bite of lunch. Then back on the buses for a long bus ride home. A stop was made in Everett for supper. That night two bus loads of tired kids arrived back in Lynden. It was a long three days, but all were glad to have had the experience. Bernie Takes His Place in LHS Bread-Line I realize that this year in Lynden has been passing fast. Maybe, too fast! About 18 months ago, I didn't know anything about AFS, but I knew that one day I would go to the USA because it was the most amazing country to me. Before I came here, I was confused about the USA. On one hand, this country was like a big Disneyland. But on the other hand, I've heard more about pollution, murder, drugs, etc. in the last five or six years. I realize now that it is impossible to have a complete idea about the U.S. because it is so different from one community to another. The experience I had here has been one of the best in my life. I will go back to France much more mature. Here, I learned to be more flexible with people and to understand them better. I enjoyed attending Lynden High School because it is very different from all the schools I have attended. Only in America, I found school spirit so important in your school life. School is much more important in your social life. Maybe I should say that you don't give enough effort to the academic subjects, but I think the most important thing in life is not to be the smartest, but to be the most responsible. Everybody has always been very friendly and nice, and that means a lot to me. It wil be very hard to say good-bye to all my friends but: ce n'est qu'un au revoir . I will never forget Lynden and everything that has been done for me. I would like to thank the AFS Chapter, but especially Mr. and Mrs. LeCocq, who have been so helpful to me, and of course, my two host families: Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer and Mr. and Mrs. Wall. That time is when the last page is sent in and all the paper work is done. This annual editor is no different. When I look back on this past year, with all its hair pulling, nail biting, and sleepless nights, I wonder how the staff and myself made it through. As assistant editor, Sheryl Hillmer gets the whole problem next year. I couldn't have made it through the year without her behind me. Elizabeth Pearson had the fun job of balancing the books and doing pages on the side. I really appreciate the help we got from Bonnie Rachinski, Jill Ten Kley, Renetta Yoder, Janet Bons, Dave Curbow, Mike Vail, Cindy Crabtree, Jackie Henken and Brenda Alan will do anything for a picture. Ronhaar. You really came through when the going got tough and the deadlines got close. Thanks go to Gareth Bolt for designing this year's cover. I marvel at the patience that Miss Lambert has had with me. I've been a real trial. Miss MacKenzie really helped us out by adding her talents. She did most of the art work in the book, thanks. Without photographers we wouldn't even have a yearbook. Alan Yoder, Korey Judson, Dean Cox and Dan Crabtree have all been running around this past year with those pesky cameras, snapping pictures here and there. Thanks a lot guys. And above all, many thanks to our professional, Russ Clift, for his many hours of work. As we wind this year up, I can't say I'm sorry to See it finished. Actually, I'm sitting here breathing a sigh of relief with my feet up on my desk. A faithful staff member. Kristy Morgan, Editor 1974 OUR bag (Ao (RES Conference time.
