Kneeling: Tom Hyldahl, Dave Jamie, Dave Holweger, Greg Schiller. This year was a building year for the Lynden Cross Country team. It takes a special type of person to run cross country. These dedi- cated people ran up to 12 miles each day, during turn-out, Those returning next year are Juniors: Ken Lange, Dave Jamie, Dave Holweger, Greg Schiller, Jim Buizer. Sophomores: John Taylor, Tom Hyldahl, Dave Weidkamp. Freshmen: Ron Vannice, and Mark Rice,. Thanks for the great job, fellows. Coach Marv Snell BUILDS FOR NEXT YEAR Go that way, and we'll head them off at the pass. Cross Country runners run for different reasons. It's a weird sport, mainly that only you know if you're giving it your best. It's easy to accept a ride from a friend in acar, You may ask, 'Why not walk or take a shortcut? That is not the purpose. You must keep on traveling and give it your innermost effort. Your legs ache and your head throbs. You wonder, Why, why am I doing this?'’ You pour your whole heart into this sport and what is the result? Then you spot it up ahead. Through the hot sweat running down your face you can see the finish line, . Then you know the purpose. You ran the complete race and you gave it your best. What a fantastic feeling. SENIOR PLAY HAS A The world of escape and the world of reality are forces that create dramatic tension for Tennessee Williams' play, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, Amanda wants her son, Tom, to bring home a gentleman caller for the crippled daughter, Laura. But Amanda's hope is confused with her memories of her own gentlemen calls, Laura, unable to cope with reality, escapes to a world of glass animals. Tom supports the family and in his attempt to adjust to mother and sister, he escapes to the movies. The gentleman caller scheme fails. Tom escapes to the merchant marines; Amanda escapes into new hopes and Laura, more secure in herself, has the memory of a pleasant evening with the gentleman caller. The class of '74 presented the play 'Here Comes the Brides,'' This play involved eleven people and was directed by Mr, (Dad) Cary, This play was given to the grade school May 4 as a matinee and the 5th for the evening performance, Mr. Cary took eleven people who didn't know each other very well and within a month or two there was a group of kids who really got along despite a few problems, Dave Curbow played the part of a typical American clean cut kid. Mark Hinton was Dave but had a different attitude and style. He became Dave's wife as a last resort to a problem they were involved in, These two were type cast. Kris Morgan was the typical s nooty housekeeper old-lady type. Colleen Buizer was the typical girl next door and was every- one's sweetheart. Rich Waldemar was a bill collec- tor who was to collect the furniture the day of Uncle Dan's (Dave Holweger) visit. Kaylene TenKley was a man chaser after Uncle Dan, Barb Vermuelen (Bub- bles) was a flirt... WOW! Judy Otter was the crazy lady's keeper and Rosemary Thomas was the crazy lady. Everyone gave a fine performance and the play was an experience neither the cast nor the audience will ever forget. Although this marked the first time in years the Lynden Lions failed to make the District play- offs, they had one of the better records in the area. This was 13 wins, and 7 losses; the team was a good basketball squad. This turned out to be one of the tightest races in Whatcom County history, Lynden was one game out of first place yet ended up in the number five position, Highlights in the season were fine team and in- dividual performances in the Mt, Baker, Nooksack and Blaine games! At the end of the season, individual awards were given to the following boys: Dave Burgraff-top re- bounder, Brad DeHaan- Inspirational and Captain's award, Marty Maberry-foul shooting award, and Randy Van Achte-Darigold Sportsmanship award, Seniors who played well for Lynden and will be sorely missed were Brad DeHaan, Mark Benson, Dave Burgraff, and Randy Van Achte, Mr. DeKoster has a fine J. V. team coming up after a 15-5 season, and Mr, DeValois' 10-2 jun- ior high team---these plus many fine juniors and sophomores from this year's varsity means Lyn- den will be a fine team for 1974! Kris Morgan, Jeff Barker, Sally Shea, and Warren. This year, as usual the annual has been a real struggle! We are finally finished though and not it's yours. First of all I want to thank Warren for being my buddy and letting me take all my frustrations out on him, He was my punch- ing bag and believe it or not, after nine months of worry and woe we have parted friends, I just have to mention all those times we were alone in the dark room, (It sure was fun huh Warren?),..he didn't mind at all when he was alone with Betty, or Barko for that matter either. Betty really helped alot by getting pictures and also for serving as Warrens punching bag when he couldn't take me any longer! On down the ladder comes Alan Yoder. Betty was his boss. Thanks alot gang...I'll never be able to thank you enough!! Last but not least of my photographers comes Barko, He'll just have to thank me for letting him develop things, (oh excuse me!) prints...in the dark room with Kris, Thanks for everything Kris. I want to wish for you lots of understanding friends when you take over next year because if you start yelling the way I did when deadlines needed to be met your going to need them, The annual is such a huge job and responsibility all I can say to you Kris is 'good luck' and 'YOU MUST BE CRAZY!' I also want to thank all my friends for putting up with me throughout this year, I honesty don't think I'll ever be the same, (in other words normal again ), I want to thank Janet Bons, Marlys Feller and lastly Tammy DeHaan for entertaining the rest of us when we trying to get our layouts done by doing her cheerleading yells. Alot of thank goes to Jill TenKley for all her help with the sports and also to Alice Taylor for all the art work. They were both great! I'd like to thank Russ Clift and his assistants for being so terrific!!! No one can top them for pictures or patience with me and Lynden High School, Mrs. Thomas was our advisor and she served as my shoul- der to cry on along with Mr. McAulay who also paid the bills! Thanks alot to both of you and to Mr, Case who gave me good ‘ol room thirteen, the ex-art room for my annual room, It also served as my locker and gave me a place to calm down when things started looking black. The year has come to a finish and so has the annual. My total thanks goes to God who made this whole annual possible for me, Without his help I could have never made it through. One last prayer I have is that you will all like this years Simba and remember your year of '73 at Lynden High School with a smile. 1973 annual editor oa DWE A.S.F. WELCOMES ODILE Dear LHS, Looking back on what I exper- | ienced here, I can say that this year was the year where I learned i the most. I don't refer only to the actual school learning, but to practical life in general. I'll never forget the help of my Amer- ican family, the Ronhaars, and the friends I've found here, They all contributed to my building up i of a more objective image of the [ United States, I didn't come here | with prejudices or illusions and | thus I had a great experience, I | advise everyone who has the op- portunity to go to a foreign coun- try with an organization like AFS | (American Field Service) that he or she should go, You can't lose, only win andlearn, This year here helped me to understand, not only the culture of the U.S. but also the culture of my own coun- try, the Grand-Duchy of Luxem- Standing: Carol Verduin, Jeanne Crabtree, Cindy Smith, Brenda Ronhaar, Janet Wood, bourg.
