Cross Country is an activity at Lynden which many students know nothing about. , It is quite a new sport at Lynden, so the | fall of 1971 was a building year for the Cross Country Team. | There was a total of six members on the team, under the direction of Coach : Marv Snell. They were Rich Kayser, “ Dave Lange, Frank Pullar, Ken Lange, Dave Holweger, and Dan Gentry. The entire team participated in the District Meet at Skagit Valley College, where Dave Lange placed third. He then went on to place thirty-fifth in the State | Meet. Dave Lang received the Inspi- rational Award, for the second consecu- | tive year. The big cats posted their best record in four years finishing with 2 wins, 3 losses and four ties. In League play the Lions end- ed up behind Nooksack, Blaine and Lyn- den Christian who finished in a 3-way tie for first. The four ties must be some kind of record and it kept the league standing in a move right up to the last ball game of the season. The Lynden move up the ladder from last place in 1970 was aided by a great improvement on both offense and de- fense in 1971. During the 1970 season the Lions scored only 34 points toa whopping 219 for their opponents. This year the Lions roared back scoring 142 points and cut their rivals output to 164, The Lions got off to a slow start and after four games their record was un- impressive--0 wins, 1 tie and 3 losses. At this point the team began to jell and roared down the homestretch winning 2 and tying 3 in their last 5 games. At the same time the aroused Lions out- scored their opponents 96 to 78 points. Leading the Lions on defense were seniors Ken Bovenkamp, Tim Horat, Craig Collings, Ron Lankhaar, Don Kleindel, Al Glass, Rick Vander Veen and Rod Visser. Juniors on the stop unit were Rick Nelson, Ron Bonsen, Greg Helgath and Stan Jones. The of- fense, which hasn't been kept off the scoreboard in their last ten games was explosive and could score from any place on the field. Leaders here were Seniors Craig Collings, Gary Shelly, Efren Acode, Ron Lankhaar, Al Glass, Tim Horat, Dan Nieuwsma, Byron Vermuelen, and Don Kleindel, Juniors and Sophomores who made a large con- tritution to the potent Lion offense were Barry Honcoop, Rick Nelson, Scott Polinder, Rich Waldemar and Mike DeCoria. Two offensive players who were hampered by injuries all year were Terry Senger and Bill Durnan, They had been counted on heavily be- fore injuries cut their effectiveness early in the season, The most pleasant surprise of the season was Craig Collings who blos- somed into a great all-around per- former for the Lions. He led the team in scoring with 10 touchdowns and by the end of the season was a constant threat to go all the way anytime he touched the football. Craig was 2nd in total offense as well as its top scorer. Sophomore Mike DeCoria was a bright spot for the Lions at quarterback. He completed 73 of 135 passes for 53% and 900 yards, in the process throwing 10 touchdown passes. He was the total offense leader for the Lions with a net of 823 yds. for the year. A special thanks to our cheerleaders. We think they were great! The Junior Varsity was undefeated, We'll see them next year on the Varsity team. LIONS FIT TO BE TIED Ron completes a pass. . The play was a classical comedy written in the 1940's. Two kindly old sisters, out of the good- ness of their hearts, cure the loneliness of old men by serving them wine with just a pinch of arsenic, The remains of the old men are in- terred by the sisters' nephew, Teddy, in the basement of their Victorian man- sion, which he thinks is the Panama Canal, Taking the lead parts were Doug Hyldahl, Denner Steenmeyer, Loch Clark, Linda Knutsen, Pat Zuidmeer and Bill Robins, Tired but HAPPY!!!! We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new Year. The Place to be happy is here. The time to be happy is now. The way to be happy is to help others so les les and Mi MI : ANU bili i Of Smiles A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making pooer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he gets along without it and none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and is nature's best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile; give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give. 43 Sports Become Important Sophomores returned to school in the fall, excited at the idea of no longer being fresh- men. They started out the year by winning First place in the Homecoming float compe- tition. The sophomores really began to feel a sense of belonging and participation this year, as members of their class palyed a real part in both J. V. and Varsity sports, Cheerleading, and various clubs. Throughout the entire foot- ball and basketball seasons they displayed a pep section to be proud of. Asa result, the sophomores won the spirit stick more often than any other class at LHS, The sophomore class of '74' looks forward with anticipation to the coming year when they are finally promoted to their junior year, and become known as upperclassmen. This team had many mo- ments of excellent play--and quarters where we did not perform as well as we would have liked to. The high point on our season was a fine team effort in winning the Northwest Dis- trict Tournament Championship at Mt. Vernon. This was the sixth time a Lynden team has won this Tournament, Then disappointment in losing out in the big state meet in Tacoma. Looking back over the season, this team scored 1,827 points in one seasons play. ...the highest scoring team in Lynden High school history. Twice they scored over the century mark, scoring 102 points in one game. and 115 points in another. A memorable game, was the comeback they made in the District Tournament, after being behind Lakeside 39-23 at halftime, and coming on to win a victory that will long be remembered by Lynden fans. Lynden High School loses some very outstanding seniors, some that have play- ed three years of varsity ball. THEY WILL BE MISSED!! The seven seniors graduating left many fine records for others to follow. Mike Maberry broke the school scoring record, 1233 points in three years of varsity ball. Named to All District Team for the third consecutive year. Elected co-captain and co-inspira- tional winner by teammates. Randy Jorissen was and excellent rebounder and defensive player, played three years of varsity ball. Elected co-captain at the end of the season. Rob Visser was Lynden's top rebounder and Foul Shooter. He played a vital role in all Lynden's victories. Assigned to opponents as top big man. Ed McNeil played consistent ball all season, good scorer and rebounder. Named winner of sportsmanship award by teammates. Craig Collings-started several games and always contibuted to the team effort and victory. Larry King-Mr. Hustle was our 6th man who always got the job done. Elected co-inspirational win- ner also. Gary Shelly-greatest thief in L.H.S, history. Noted for stealing the ball. Fine team player also with three years of varsity play. Although we lose many outstanding players-I am sure with Mr. DeKoster's fine J. V. team having an outstanding re- cord of 18 wins 2 losses plus players from Mr. De Valoises Junior High team, the Lions will again field a fine team for 1972-73 basketball season. We placed third in our Sub-district, fourth in our dis- trict, and seventh in our Regionals. This was the first year that Lynden went to the State Tournament, and we took four players there this year. One of these placed fifth in the State Tournament. Even though we never had all weight classes filled, usually only ten out of a possible twelve, we still won the majority of our matches. The boys showed tremendous individual and team effort. We never lost to a team who had the same number of wrestlers as we did. Outstanding wrestlers were Frank Pullar, Eric Johnson, Don Kleindel, Stan Jones, Al Glass, and Rich Waldemar. The rest of the team included Jim Buizer, Dave Jaime, Barry Swinburnson, Mark Weeks, Rich Kayser, Bill Jones, Terry Senger, Dave Weidkamp, and Alan Yoder. The band played at the home football and basketball games and also at the district and state basketball tournaments. They rented a house in Tacoma for the State Tournament, and played for several other schools' games besides our own. Lynden's motto at the tour- neys was Our band is number 1. Several band members and Mr. Evans im- proved the accoustics in the music room by glueing egg cartons to the walls and ceiling. This gave it a rustic effect which drew quite a bit of publicity! Together with the high school chorus, Junior High chorus and band, and the grade school bands, they put on a Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and a Pops Concert, the latter being the final performance of the music department for the school year of 1971-72. Halfway through the Victoria Parade, the band took up Cross-Country antics, and triple- timed the remainder of the parade. We are very proud of the entire music de- partment, and would like to thank Gary Evans and Holly Bertrand for giving so much of their time so that our school will have a name to be proud of! 77 BASEBALL TEAM--FRONT ROW: Gary Shelly, Mike Maberry, Craig Collings, Don Kleindel, Terry Senger, Mike Bailey, Albert Glass. BACK ROW: Rick Sundstrom, Marty Maberry, Ned VanderPloeg, Randy VanderVeen, Terry DeKoster, Duane Shelly, Barry Honcoop, Coach Rollie DeKoster. BASEBALL The Lynden team, led by seven seniors, swept through the Whatcom County League with a 12-0 season. Led by the outstanding pitching of Gary Shelly, the Lions won the title for the second year ina row. The team's 2-year re- cord was 24-0. This is the best record by any team in Whatcom County Baseball history. The clutch playing by Craig Collings allowed the Lions to win several close ball games in the later half of the season. Don Kliendel, as a catcher, did not allow anyone to steal a base all season. Other seniors on the team were Mike Bailey, Mike Maberry, Terry Senger, and Al Glass. Mike Maberry and Gary Shelley were elected to play in the All-Star game, and represented Lynden very well. The Lions will be back to defend their title next year and will be led by Barry Honcoop, Terry DeKoster, Marty Maberry, and strong Jayvee and Freshmen teams. Feelin’ groovy, just had my Cheerios! Twenty ?!...come along now She's NOT eating now!!! This three act play by William Gibson is a true story based on the life of Helen Keller. The play brought out some fine talent never seen before in the junior class. Sue Springer did a fan- tastic job of acting. She played the very difficult role of Helen Keller. Being blind, deaf, and mute Sue did a fine job. Ellen Enfield portrayed Annie Sullivan. Ellen worked many long, hard hours as did all the play cast members and the effect of the play was well worth all the time spent. Bill Durnan, Kaydean Hoober, Dianna Rdesinski and Warren Lowe had outstanding performances also, All the rest of the play-cast members con- tributed to the play to make it receive a standing ovation and it thoroughly deserved one. Money from the play helped the junior class budget greatly. A sincere thank-you from the junior class goes to all those involved with acting, lighting, costumes, make-up, tickets and all the other little details involved. Robert Bajema built the entire set for the play and also created the lighting scheme. He created numerous things and a real old-fashioned water pump was among them, Mr. McKernon again put so much time and effort into making this play a success, the juniors would like to thank him especially. Thanks for your time, your worrying and the successes you have given to the students of Lynden High. This year has been passing so fast. The day when I heard from A.F.S. that I was coming here seems just like yesterday. I remember how ex- cited I was, and how hard I tried to find Lynden on the map. (I couldn't find it though. ) There seems to be so many things that occur to me, and I won't be able to write all of them down. This year has been a greatest experience for me throughout my life, and I have learned really so many things. I like Lynden very much. Iama city kid. I was born and grew up in the world's largest city which has more than four thousand times more people than Lynden. So the most different and charming thing I felt about Lynden is the nature. You wouldn't believe that I had never petted cows and horses before I came here. The clear air, green field with cows and horses, the gorgeous mountains; well, everything looks just like a picture. Even the only bad natural phenomenon, too much rain has overcome me, Of course, attending school as a student added a lot more. Being a part of LHS made me many nice friends, and great memories. But as you may know, I am actually very shy, and very sorry that I didn't get to know all of you well. But I still feel very fortunate that I could go to Lynden High in- stead of a bigger school. You have always been very friendly and nice to me, But just after I got to know you better, now, I have to leave. The un- forgettable trip to eastern Washington. You will never forget that I fell asleep during the film at the Rocky Reach Dam. How will I just leave here, Senior Class President Mary Likkel measures Rinko for her gradu- and forget about you and the things I have done with ation cap and gown. you. Of course, I won't. I will always remember you, and come back as soon as I can to visit you. Then please remember me, and be as friendly as 44 you have always been to me, Clasp Hands and Know I thank all of you for having me for this past year, And special thanks to the A. F.S. chapter, and of course, to my loving family, the Lewises. I will never, never forget you! wee Rinko Tomishige i Mere) % i Hey Waltraud, who are YOU trying to hide from? Rinko is making a paper- class. The Lynden AFS club really prospered this year, with Mr. Springer as advisor, and Jan Kittleson as president. They threw surprise birthday parties for both foreign exchange stu- dents, Waltraud Wagner and Rinko Tomishige. Throughout the year, they sponsored dances, and sold stationery and Christmas cards. In the spring, the AFS club sponsored an international dinner, which consisted of casse- roles, desserts, and bread from many different countries, At the end of the year, they helda farewell party for Rinko and Waltraud. Two Lynden High School students, Sue Springer, and Brent Francisco are nominees for a foreign exchange program in some foreign country this coming summer or next school year. Rinko and Waltraud complete one year in the American school system, and graduate with the senior class of 1972. _ the Thoughts of Men in Other Lands” John Masefield Coming from Nurnberg, Germany, an urban area of more than half a million people, I found Lynden to be a completely different experience from anything I had ever known. The things that I saw and learned both in and out of school gave me first-hand experience with the American system. I especially want to thank all the friends who helped me get acquainted and learn new ways, and made me feel at home. I really enjoyed my year here in Lynden. It is hard to say good-bye. I hope to see some of you in my own country soon. Auf Wiedersehen! in Germany! Often our plans led us down dead end roads, but with the unrelenting help of countless friends and professional people, we managed to accomplish our goal, Maybe this annual doesn't look especially different to you, but for us it represents hard work on Saturdays, Holidays, and part of our summer vacation, We were constantly thinking about cameras, film, and had to be aware of all school functions so that pictures could be taken, We would like to thank our professional photo- grapher, Russ Clift, Your top quality pictures and welcoming service helped to make our yearbook one of the best. And to Ginnie Shea for helping to de- velop pictures when our deadline was near. Mr. McAuley, and Miss Lambert, thank you for your unwavering interest in our activities and your faith in our judgments, To our photographers Rocky Ross, Debby Lewis, and Mary Likkel, thank you. Without your endless time spent in taking candid shots, this book would have failed. A thank you also to the Lynden Tribune for letting us use some of your pictures, and to Jan Kittleson for doing the art work on the annual, Sally, Lois, Jeff, and Krism we expressively thank you for many hours of work involved in the producing of this book, A special thanks goes to all our friends, both at home and at school, who have assisted us in many small, but noticeable ways.
