As Freshmen we moved in the shadow of global war. Then civilization held its breath while Hiroshima gave mute evidence that the change had come-sudden, startling. violent. Time crossed with lightning speed into a new era, leaving ours the last high school senior class ever to say, We knew a pre-atomic way of life. With gratitude for this interim free from the obligation of military service, and with confidence that the Spirit of Change will hasten and not hinder man's advance to a more humane world, we dedicate our best on this 26th day of May, 1948. Lynden's Lions got off to a good start this year in their conference play by nosing out a determined Bellingham B squad 6-0, after being drubbed 20-7 the week before by the Arlington Eagles. Following the Bellingham tilt, the Lions took a thriller from Blaine, 13-12, and had hopes for the County Championship. These hopes were shattered the following week by a powerful Baker eleven that rolled over the Green and Gold 26-O. On the downward trail, the Lions lost a hard- fought struggle to the Ferndale Eagles, 14-6. lull Light 1? 3 is 5 3 is qaalfiall Sguacf liznek Row, l,el'l lo Right-Dirk Moore, Warren Hovzlnder, William liouse, .lerald llurrly, Bruce liajeinu, David Burns, Frank Hodenlmurg, Howard Sorenson, Kenneth Delloer, Lelioy Nolehoom, 'Theodore H2l1ijIllllliL'l'S, George Griffitll, Roger Yanrle Iiznnp, Ronald Mock, Donald Hugdahl, llill Seaherg. Lynden stepped back onto the Winning Wagon the next Week by downing the hapless Meridian Trojans. 19-0. In an Armistice Day tussle with Nooksack, the Lions battled to a 6-6 deadlock to wind up the season's play. Bafrkezfdall This was a great year for the Green and Gold basketeers who hung up a record of eighteen wins and four losses, and also won two first-place trophies. The first was captured in the X'mas Holiday Tournament at Mount Vernon, in which Lynden defeated by wide margins three tough Skagit quintettes, LaConner, Sedro-Woolley. and Mount Vernon. The Lions won the second trophy by taking first in the District Tourney-defeating Anacortes, Arlington, and Mt. Baker. Sandwiched in between these two tourneys, the Lions downed such formidable opponents as Snohomish, Mt. Baker, and Bellingham. But when the high-flying Lyndenites were gun- ning for their thirteenth consecutive win, the Nooksack Pioneers upset them by one point. Lynden succumbed to their second setback a few weeks later when Mt. Baker slaughtered the Lions to a tune of 32-21, to give Baker first place and Lynden runner-up in the county race. Following the District Tourney the Weitzmen traveled to Seattle for the State Tourna- ment. There the Lions went into a tailspin, losing to Garfield, 29-27, after leading the Seattle champs all through the game. The following noon, the Lynden quintet bowed out of the meet after dropping a heart-breaker to Lincoln of Tacoma, 33-31. Fifty-out L ll Song Leaders-Jessie lsom and Ann Elliott. Pete Van Dyke, veteran hurler of four years, returns to the mound to pitch for the Lions. John DeBoer, another returning letterman, holds down the catcher's spot. At first base, Jake Maberry shows plenty of talent, and at second, Lynden is two-deep with Jim Noteboom and Jimmy Wood. Chuck Bailey, strong man with the bat, controls third base, and Lawrence Honcoop, diminutive infielder, fills the short-stop position. In the outfield, four boys with plenty of experience: Glen Huleatt. Leroy Holt, Glenn McGuire, and Jim Wortley, shag flies for the Weitzmen. Opening their 1948 season, the Lions shut out Sedro-Woolley, 5-0, following up this triumph with a 5-2 victory over the Anacortes Seagulls. The next Week at Blaine, the Lions Went Wild in the ninth inning, coming through with five runs to make the final score 8-3. With this encouraging beginning, the Lion's prospects of remaining undefeated a second year are bright. Fi t'ty-foul'
