SUPERINTENDENT 1961-1987 TO THE STUDENTS OF LCH - 1986 - 1987 GREETINGS The year was 1961. That seems like history to you me it seems but a very few years ago. There were 68 graduates. The colors were Red low Thee. Song: Follow, | Will Follow Thee ... The enrollment was 3410 students in the High School. Pep Club was a very large group, all wearing uniforms. There was a girls’ Drill Team which marched at the half time of home basketball games. There was an intramurals program for girls through | who make up the student body in 1986-1987. To — and Silver. The flower-Red Rose. Motto: | Will Fol- | It was also my first year as Superintendent and | high school Principal of Lynden Christian School. | Many of your parents made up the student body. : which they could earn a school sweater and letter. No interschool athletic teams were available for girls. | Your present high school Principal, Mr. Polinder was Vice-President of the Sophomore class. Hair styles were short for both boys and girls. Girls wore skirts and blouses or weaters - no jeans, or slacks were allowed except for play days or field trips. Drugs were not on the scene. There was some drinking but not as available as in 1987. Faculty members dressed more formally than now. Always ties for men and dresses for the women, except in P.E. That senior class is scattered all over the nation serving as ministers, teachers, lawyers, nurses, dentists, business people, construction, homemakers, a barber, and engaged in farming. One member, Melvin Hoekstra, who was serving as a Christian school teacher in Michigan, was killed in an auto accident in Nebraska upon returning to his job from Lynden. | recall this class very well. | have many pleasant memories about them. For the most part the class and | student body were happy. Cooperation was good and accomplishments many. When | look over the graduates pictures, it can be said that by far the majority of these did indeed adopt their motto ‘| Will Follow Thee” as their personal life’s motto. Your class of 1987 chose “Walk In The Light’’ as its motto. Christ is that light! He claims that for Himself. Lynden Christian taught you that. Lynden Christian urged you to “Walk In The Light’. While much has changed between 1961 and 1987, this foundational truth remains - Christ is the Light of the | world! If you, each one of you, now, are to have a life worth living here and an eternity in Heaven, you: must, absolutely MUST “Follow Him’’ as your predecessors of 1961 pledged to do. To the class of 1961 | wrote and said for their Annual whose theme was “Reflections’’ the following - “God enjoins us to reflect | when he says: ‘Be Still, And Know That | Am God”’. If you know that, really know that, and pattern your life accordingly, the reflection you cast will be a beautiful one, because you will reflect the Perfect Original”. Twenty six years later by the Grace of God, | urge you graduates and students all to Walk In The Light and: thus Reflect Jesus and true Joy will be Yours. n Love, Shalom, Farewell, God Be With You Forever, Ben H. Boxum, Superintendent, 18 Fellow Christian, and Friend. MR. RON POLINDER L.C.S. High School Principal 1986- Little did | ever think that | would be writing my thoughts for this distinguished publication. Even though my professional training was in school ad- ministration, the thought of being principal in one’s hometown did not particularly appeal to me. But the Lord’s call was clear, and He thrust me into this adventurous assignment. An adventure indeed! The Lord has given us some dramatic times together. Consider the ex- citement of the Kingbowl and the girls finals at the State Tournament. Who will forget the pain of those two losses of the boys basketball team in the closing seconds at District Tournament. There was drama of another kind in “The Best Christmas eee Pageant Ever’’, ‘Hello Dolly’, and a stimulating ae : se Creative Arts Week. The Spiritual drama of our spiritual emphasis week - The Week of Decision, found dozens of students reassured in their faith, or making new commitments to Jesus Christ. You will note that these events are largely what we call extracurricular. While clearly a vital part to the life | of aschool, | want to suggest that, though dramatic, they will not necessarily carry the long-range impact of what happens in these classrooms day in and day out. | submit the things you learned about caring for your body in P.E., what you learned about marriage in Family Living, what you learned about the grace of God in Bible class are of great significance. The lessons of justice and righteousness in government, of stewardship of your resources in Money | Management, of earthkeeping in Biology - these are lessons that will form your values for a lifetime. | The list is seemingly endless - the communication skills from your language arts classes, the word processing | skills, the technical skills of voca-ag classes will equip you for a life of service in God’s kingdom. | All of these lessons combined day after day, month after month, year after year have intended to give | you a Christian mind. To be sure the culture around us would like to secularize your thinking and behavior. | But the lessons of Lynden Christian will prompt you to resist the and nudge you toward responsible Christian living. We will challenge you to transform our culture to conform to standards of Christ, and will equip you | to be His witness in thought, word, and deed. | Thanks for allowing me to be part of the adventure, for your warmth, your cooperation, your friendship.
