Friendship is costly! Not in dollars and cents. The Prodigal son found out you cannot buy true friends. It’s costly in feelings; in emotions; in the spending of self for a friend. You know how lovely and secure you feel with your friend as you share your deepest secrets. You also know how horribly alone you feel when your friend rejects you or betrays your trust. Suddenly that warm, secure feeling you had yesterday is shattered You feel nothing will ever be the same between you and your friend again. Even so, with all its risks and sometimes its cruel hurts, friends and friendship are gifts from God. Scripture is filled with wonderful examples of beautiful friendships. Scripture is also filled with the most woeful examples of friends betrayed. I Samuel 20 records the beautiful friendship of David and Jonathon when they were young folks. They swore an oath to be, “Forever Friends ”. This same David, in Psalm 41 speaks from a broken heart about a friend who once shared bread-with him, had now turned against him. ‘ Job's friends turned out to be sorry comforters just when he needed them the most. Proverbs 18:24 speaks of “‘a friend that sticks closer than a brother”. Isn’t that something? Good as these examples are, there is a better one. A friend of whom it can be said without any exceptions, “Forever Friends”. His name is Jesus Christ. His friends, who said they were His “Forever Friends” left Him. Even God did! But you know why, don’t you? You have heard it many times at Lynden Christian. God forsaken and friend forsaken so that you and I might be His Friend Forever! Matthew 28:20 records Christ’s promise just before He left this earth — I will be with you (Mary, Kristy, John, Henry, Gerrit, Joan) always, to the very end of the age. I, along with all your teachers, parents, and many others pray that each one of you know Him as your Savior and “Forever Friend”. Nothing or no one is more important than that. i Shalom in Christ, Ben H. Boxum Superintendent 44 1. Mr. Leonard Stob poses for yet another annual picture. 2. Cross Country 57 58 Volleyball The JV volleyball team had an excellent ’84 season. With a 14-2 overall record, the team shone above the rest. They played as a com- plete unit on the floor, using their heads and the talent God gave them to the best of their ability. It was a fun and challenging season for LC, and one of the high- lights of it was when the en- tire team (JV and varsity coaches), picked up and moved a Honda civic car so our bus could leave. We’re tough and I’m proud, Coach Rinsema. The 1984-5 varsity volley- ball season began with six returning seniors and three juniors, who had seen some varsity action in the preced- ing season. Our hope was high for a winning season. After a pre-season split of 2 wins and 2 losses, we en- tered league play with con- tinued optimism for a 500 or better season. Special fea- tures of the season included a trip to Friday Harbor with a quick lesson in catching busses and ferries, and our hosting a tour team from Victoria, B.C. Though the calibre of our play was var- ied, our league opponants proved to be consistently of a higher calibre. It was espe- cially noteworthy that our league provided the Ist, 3rd, and Sth place teams in the state. i VARSITY “VOLLEYBALL back row: Trainer Mr. Vera, Coach Mr. Rinsema, Statistician Karen Vander Veen, Robin Van Den Berg, Sheri Burns, Lisa Westra, Manager Julie Maarhuis, Statisti- cian Tami Haan, Assistant Coach Juli Reinsma, front row: Kara Vander Haak, Melinda Mellema, Brenda Timmer, Lisa Anderson, Laurie Anderson, Sharla Van Hof- wegen, Stacy Starkenburg 2. With plenty of returning sopho- mores their hopes were high as the season began, but many of these sophomores were moved up to varsity. The JV’s had to gain some fast experience and they played hard against the more experienced teams. This year’s efforts should help the future varsity Lyncs. The Lyncs failed in their ef- forts for a “winning season” (2-7) but succeeded in their efforts to play with ‘“‘Chris- tian class.” They won the Sportsmanship Award for Whatcom County. Tim Van Lohuizen and Dave Zylstra made All League Ist team while Kevin Kaemingk and Lee Beld made 2nd team. A lot of happy memories mixed with tears made the season a time to remember. Football Girls’ Basketball This year the girl’s JV bas- ketball team felt the thrill of victories and the agony of only one defeat! The season record wasn’t too shabby if that’s all you’re interested in. But there was more to it than that. Behind the record lies the real thing-the girls kept the ball bouncing. Many hours and a lot of en- ergy was put out. Besides physical energy, a lot of emotional energy was need- ed. After their first loss they knew they had a long road to travel and it wouldn’t be an easy one. But in every way possible the girls stuck together and earned their record. Memories were gained, relationships built, and God was given the glo- ry. It was a great year! The varsity Lady Lyncs fin- ished the regular season with a 19-1 record and cap- tured their sixth straight Watcom County League ti- tle. The Lyncs came into district and were knocked off by Mt. Baker in a semi- final game. With real to- getherness and tough play, they battled on to capture third place and make their eighth consecutive appear- ance at state. The Lady Lyncs placed sixth in Taco- ma after defeating Newport and Mt. Baker and losing to the eventual State champi- on CleElum and also to Fos- ter. The Lyncs graduated a lot of valuable talent in six seniors, but with lots of young talent coming up, we can look forward to next season. 1. Girls’ Basketball 63 Basketball Boys’ After finishing second in the league last year, the JV Lyncs once again won the JV title this year (third first place finish in the last four years!). Highlights of the year were an overtime win over Kings and a double Overtime win over Lynden. Injuries became a_ factor late in the season, but the Lyncs had the depth to com- pensate for it in most of their games. Playing a pressing, running style of basketball, the JV Lyncs were often an exciting team to watch. A talented group of underclassmen should provide some fine varsity teams in the future. Defending a_ third place state tournament finish is never an easy task. It is even more difficult with only one experienced player return- ing and the tallest player be- ing only 6’2”. The varsity Lyncs consistently played against taller teams. They lost their share of games and the last week of the season were eliminated from post- season play. But the Lyncs fought hard with 6 of their league’s games being decid- ed by fewer than 8 points. Perhaps the highlight of the season was a win over sec- ond place league finisher, Meridian, who eventually went on to state. Thanks, Lyncs, for never giving up! We had hopes of sending a 1600 relay team to state this year after coming so close the last three years, but 1985 proved to be the third “almost” year for the relay. We came up a few seconds short at the District meet after shifting personnel in the relay several times dur- ing the year. Tim Van Lo- huizen performed well in the throwing events as a senior, and Lee Beld in the discus. Kevin Mellema, distance runner, was the other senior who scored many points for us. Keith Vander Griend, junior, was awarded the Trackman of the Year tro- phy, having accumulated 199 points during the sea- son. Keith went on to place sixth at state in the 400 me- ter while setting a new school record of :51.3 in that event. Tim Van Lohul- zen earned the Coaches Award. I. A seventh inning, 3-2 win over Lynden was a cru- cial turning point. The Lyncs then tied for the league title by beating the then first place Mt. Baker Mountaineers at their field. The Lady Lyncs went on to win the District title by de- feating South Whidbey, Lynden (9-0 this time), and Darrington in the cham- pionship game. The chapel was beautifully decorated with stars, balloons, and streamers in pink and blue. The mothers served a deli- cious dinner. Afterwards, everyone settled back to en- Joy the highlight of the evening, Ken Miedema. For several years the juniors have tried to schedule Ken as the entertainment and It was well worth the wait! An- other special part of the evening, the slide show, brought back many memo- ries. The evening came to a close as a junior ensemble sang “Friends”. Jr. Sr. Banquet 101] 102 Senior Trip Early Tuesday morning, May 21, the Senior class boarded two chartered bus- es for a day of fun and ex- citement in Seattle. After a two-hour bus ride, we were ready to get out and see the city! The Seattle Center was our first stop, and after see- ing the IMAX film ““Speed,”’ we were on our own for the next few hours. Some toured the Science Center, while others walked around the Food Fair, or went up the Space Needle. Somehow we all made it down to Pike Street Market via the Monorail. We then went on a tour of the harbor and through the Seattle Aquarium. Our buses were waiting outside the aquar- jum and rushed us over to Pizza and Pipes where we all porked out on pop and pizza. Our final event of the day was the Mariners vs. Yankees game. The Mari- ners lost, but we had a good time anyway. After a long, fun-filled day together, the class of 1985 headed back to Lynden. We'd like to thank Mr. Vander Haak and Mr. Van Hulzen for all the time spent organizing this memo- rable day for us. Thanks for making it possible! 1. Unbelievable!! 2. Everyone was ready to wait patiently for the har- bor cruise after an afternoon on the waterfront. 3. The Seattle Aquar- jum was just one of the many high- lights of the day. 4. The people at the market were just as interesting as the sea creatures in the aquar- ium! The final chapel of the year was once again held in rec- ognition of the Seniors. It was a special time for all of us as the class officers shared their thoughts and feelings. A poem was read and the Senior choir sang “More Than a Song.”’ Fol- lowing chapel, tradition was held as the namecards were placed in the ground, per- manently becoming a part of our school’s history. Many tears were shed as the school song was sung for the final time this year and sad good-byes were said to the underclassmen. Thank you everyone for many special memories! 1. The Seniors join heart and voice in the final chapel of 1985. 2. The tradition of namecards will always be treasured. 3. Stacy drops her card along with the other Seniors of 1985. 103 Bacca- laureate Sunday, June 2, 1985 at 2:00 pune in Vihe YP hird Christian Reformed Church, Senior Baccalaure- ate was held. Rev. Dick Vriesman gave the Bacca- laureate address, ‘“‘Lord, We Are Friends Forever.”’ Then the Senior choir sang ‘‘More Than a Song”. Graduation began to seem like more of a reality. Friday, June 7, 1985 was probably the craziest day, emotionally, for Seniors, as twelve years came to a close on graduation night. The Seniors chose red and white for their class colors and their motto was “‘Lord, We Are Friends Forever”. Ja- mie Sipma, the class speak- er, commented ona few past memories, extende d thank- you's, and encouraged her fellow classmates in regards to the future. That night some final good-byes were said but we can still say: Lord, we are friends forever. 1. The Senior choir sang at Bacca- laureate. 2. Rev. Gerrit Sheeres led the congregation in prayer. 3. Hap- py Birthday, Tim! 4. Too bad it’s only baccalaureate. 5. Memories were brought back, as Jamie deliv- ered the class speech. 6. Somehow being the annual edi- tor has pulled it all together. As my staff and I collected pictures and ideas for this year’s annual, many memories came back to me. Some were irrelevant and some will not soon be forgotten. It’s my hope that this annual will capture some of those memories for you, too. To the Seniors of 1985, we’ve had an unforgettable year and some great times! I wish you the best! No matter which way the Lord may lead each one of us, nothing can erase the memories of the things we have shared together as a class. These memories will last for- ever because “‘friends are friends forever!” To the underclassmen, take full advantage of your high school years; they only happen once. Get involved and learn to know a lot of different people. Each one is special! Finally, I'd like to thank all of those who helped make this annual possible: To Mr. Hof who put up with me all year long - especially my dumb questions! I couldn’t have done it without him; to Joyce who willingly did so many things for my staff and I; to Donette’s for all they did; to all of the stu- dents and teachers who helped with the little things; to my en- tire staff who worked hard even when they didn’t feel like it; and most of all to Mike, Gina, and Jana who were my sound- ing boards when things didn’t go right and who worked hard so that things worked out! Thank you everyone! May God Bless You All!
