ADMINISTRATION 1982 RNA Superintendent Mr. Ben Boxum Looking Back On A New Beginning Your yearbook theme implies that at a very specific, particular time something changed in your life and from that point on things are different than before. If you could remember when you took your first step, that indeed was a new beginning of perambulation for you. You could look back on that beginning. Seniors, can look back to commencement as a point of reference in time. It makes a new beginning in their lives - a time of leaving high school days and a beginning of new responsibilities. Beginnings can be anticipated or feared, depending on their nature. In our country there is such as increased amount of anxiety among young people that the National Institute of Mental Health has made the study of adolescent stress a priority. One of the main factors ca using this stress, is the constant changes or beginnings that bombard the young people. What can be done to help? The “authoritie s” say each must be in touch with a person who gives a meaning to life, who gives a sense of fixity and who tells the person that he or she matters. Isn’t that something? That’s exactly where Christian instruction comes in. It points to God the Creator of whom scripture records—“In the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth” and to Jesus Christ of whom it is written - “If any person is in Christ, that person is a new creature: old things are passed; behold all things are become new.” If you have experienced that new beginning, then you can and should indeed look back so you will have the foundation from which you can view all other new beginnings in your life. When Dwayne Schol- ten broke his wrist before the season got underway, things seemed to be going downhill, and the Lyncs proceeded to lose their first four games. But after this it was all uphill. Scholten was blessed with a speedy recovery and everything started to click. The Lyncs won 14 straight league games to claim the league title. It was the school’s best league record ever. District came next. After knocking off Bellevue Christian, and squeaking by Tolt, the Lyncs met up with Kings. They lost in a thrilling game, but still qualified for state. 47 Lynden Blaine Meridian Mt. Baker Lynden Blaine Nooksack Meridian Nooksack Mt. Baker Lynden Blaine Meridian Nooksack Mt. The Lyncs battled the Rochester Warriors in a 9:00 a.m. game, thus beginning the state tournament. They came _ through with flying colors, stomping the Warriors 60-41. Next the Lyncs faced tournament power, Cashmere Bulldogs. They came through in a hard fought game 64- 60. This put them in the Semi-finals against Orting. The fired up team thrashed Orting 74-33 and it was on to the Championship! The rest is history! Though exhausted both mentally and physically, the fabulous Lyncs again came through in a very emotional, heart throbbing, and thrilling game, de- feating the Highland Scotties 57-54. This gave the play- ers their ultimate goal of coming home with the 1982 Class A Basketball Championship! A special congratulations to seniors, Dwayne Scholten and Craig Gunst. Dwayne received the State Tourna- ment MVP and was also chosen on the all A-B State Team. Craig also received all-state honors. The seniors on the team would like to thank all those who made this special year possible. Especially to our super coach, Mr. De Hoog. His coaching and his attitudes taught us truly what playing basketball is all about, and he was a really great guy to play for. I thought every issue was a Classy production, and I would like to thank Mr. Ypma, Brent, Sandy, Margreta, Mike, Carrie, Mark, Char- mae, Brenda, Patty, and both Harvey’s for that fact, be- cause my name was under the “editor”’ position. Putting out the HiLite is not only getting the paper togeth- er; it’s also an actual class (“journalism” in the first year and “news production” in the second), and the purpose of being in any class is to learn. Because of the teamwork, open thinking, responsibility, and discretion involved in put- ting out a periodical with quite a bit of exposure, you can learn things in the HiLite classes which you can’t learn in any others. We “discussed” alot of topics in class, and the most important thing I personally learned was that every- body’s opinion 1s equally important, no matter how strange it might seem to others. I also learned alot about how people can use their unique talents and differences to work toward a common goal. Being on the HiLite is lots of fun. The classes are informal, and there’s alot of opportunity for travel (around the hall- ways and sometimes to exciting downtwon Lynden!) There are occasional staff outings, each one an enriching exper- ience. I had a thoroughly good time working on the HiLite, and I’m going to miss everyone involved. Thanks again to the staff and Mr. Ypma for all the learning, and to everyone else for being the news. Dean Visser HiLite Editor IDO Te ee et ies hs Dean Visser Ads Manager .....
