Excelsior 1981 Volume No. 32 Lynden Christian High Lynden, WA Marlys Zoerink-Editor Patty Vos-Ass’t. Editor ‘Mr. Hof-Advisor Contents Administration Organizations Sports Activities Classes Seniors Dedication .. . We, the annual staff, would like to dedicate the ‘81 Excelsior to Dean Scholten. Dean has many special talents that many of us don’t have. His friendliness .and quick smile prove that his spirits are usually in good shape. Watching Dean has made many people realize that we take too much for granted, and we should all be proud of who we are. A Sure Way To A Happy Day Happiness is something we create in our mind, It’s not something you search for And so seldom find — It's just waking up And beginning the day By counting our blessings and kneeling to pray — It’s giving up thoughts that breed discontent And accepting what comes as a “gift heaven-sent” — It's giving up wishing for things we have not And making the best of Whatever we've got — It’s knowing that life is determined for us, And pursuing our tasks without fret, fume or fuss — For it’s by completing what God gives us to do | That we find real contentment and — happiness, too. One of the questions most frequently asked by people is - “What time is it?” If we are trying to get to class and avoid a tardy, or if we are in class and waiting for it to end; if we are traveling and are anxious to arrive; if we are having a good time but know we are to be home at a certain hour; if we are ill or anxious and can’t sleep; of if we have over slept; any of these occasions prompt the question, “What time is it?” The Bible tells us God created time - “In the beginning, God —.”’ Genesis 1:1. God is eternal - timeless - but we are not. There is a time, the Bible says, a very important time and that is now. God gives to each person, you and me, a definite period of time on this earth - and then we are taken from time into eternity. During that time span each person is called to seek God now. John 3:16 says “God so loved the world He sent His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Notice that - not a timed life but eternal life. 2 Corinthians 6 says it well, “I tell you, now is the time of God’s fa vor, now is the day of salvation.” There is a time for everything. But the first thing you must do while you are in time is seek God’s Kingdom, Luke 12:31, through faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Have you done that? If you have, then you have nothing to fear in time or when time ends. If you haven't - There Is A Time, and it is now. Don’t put it off! The theme of this Yearbook is one to make you think about you and time, and God, and eternity. = Take time to do that now. The L.C.H.S. Volleyball Team was lacking in exper- lence this year, but not in talent. Under the direction of a brand-new coach, (Miss Val Schaap), the varsity team had a win-loss record of 6-6. Seniors Lynne Heer- inga and Joyce Spoelstra helped keep the team very competitive all during the season. Even though the girls didn’t win all of their games, they had a lot of fun playing together. The J.V. Team, along with Coach Donna Atsma, had a disappointing season with the record of 0-9. There is a lot of talent though, which will be used and appreciated in the upcoming years. Coached by Mr. Curt De Haan, the girls placed first in county and third in district, winning them a berth at state. Once the Lady Lyncs reached state, they didn’t do as well. They lost their first two games by close scores, but they put up a tough fight all the way. The Lyncs are looking forward to another excellent girls team next year as they are only losing four seniors. Lori Weg, Lynne Heer- inga, Susan De KoekKoek, and Joyce Spoelstra have been involved in basketball all through high school and have been leading factors in many victories. Their record of 13-7 proved it. This season was full of neat sur- prises for Coach De Haan. Since the Softball program just started last year, not many girls were ex- pected to come out for it. A lot of girls did come out though, and L.C. had it’s Softball Team. An- other surprise was the team’s win of Ist place at the Blaine Invita- tional Softball Tournament over 12 other schools. They won four games in a row and took home the trophy. The team is losing six Seniors this year. Evelyn Tjoelker, Lori Weg, Lynne Heeringa, Joyce Spoelstra, Ruth Steinfort, and Renee Velth- uizen are going to be missed, but with the quality of players coming up, another great season is expect- ed next year. Fine Arts WeeK Porthe 2nd year, L.C.HS. has Fine Arts Week has proved to be an enjoyable event and a great way to find out talents of many different people. “Springtime For Dan” was performed by the Advanced Speech Class. An instrumental ensemble played “Stairway to Heaven”’. Our Miss Brooks On March 19, 20, and 24 LCHS presented the musi- cal “Our Miss Brooks.” This musical dealt with Connie Brooks, a school teacher, who was in charge of directing the musical revue. This responsibility anne her up against the school’s music director, Miss Audubon, and the coach, Hugo Longacre, as she competes with them for practice time in the gym. In the end, Miss Brooks and Mr. Longacre fall in love, and the musical revue is a success. We appreciate the hard work of the director, Mr. Marvin Vander Pol; the cast, the instrumentalists, and everyone backstage for a job well done. a” TSE TIN ae BE eS ME ESTER RI UT ree Cast Of Characters Miss Brooks 3s oes os Debi Stremler Hugo-Longacre, the coach ...Ben Kornelis Mr. Wadsworth, the principal... Dear Students of L.C.H.S.: After a busy year, I can truly say that I’ve enjoyed being your annual editor for the ‘81 Excelsior. I never knew how much work had to be done to put an annual together, but now I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I hope you won’t just throw this book into a corner to collect dust, but instead look back at it from time to time and refresh your memory of the good ‘ole days. I sincerely hope that I haven't disappointed anyone, and if I have I ask that you'll accept my apologies. To the outstanding Senior Class of 81, I wish you each the best as you begin a new chapter of your life. To the underclassmen, enjoy every minute of your youth because they’re the best years of your life. Id like to take up a little space in this yearbook to thank those who did so much to help me through this year: Mr. Hof, my advisor who guided me along; Joyce Honcoop, who took so many little messages and helped keep my spirits high; Leo Judy from Donette, who were so much fun to work with and also very willing to help; and last but never least to my staff and all the others who all did their part.
