ie Dear Jesus, Another year has passed and our hearts are filled with memories. Memories of discoveries and victories, frustrations and defeats. . . Memories of learning, and growing, and loving You. As we look back we can see it was a very good year. Thank You for the special events. . . the special moments. . . the special friends. . . Through these You have touched us. We dedicate these memories to You.— For because of You it was a very good year. 1979 DON WMEMmA ty Excelsior 1979 Volume No. 30 Lynden Christian High Lynden, Wash. Raa R te PRaRI PER P Z ee : ee - Lord bless the garde; May the seeds. -. they have planted take root== and grow, - Superintendent Mr. Ben Boxum A word to the wise. . . All the Flowers of all our Tomorrows are in the Seeds of Today. That's a futuristic statement. It is a statement implying hope. It is a statement that hints at necessary action if there are to be flowers at all. Seeds possess potential. One could say of an acorn in his hand, I am holding a potential stately and rugged oak tree. That small seed can become that mighty tree under proper growing conditions and care. God, in Genesis 1:11-12 puts it clearly when He announced into existence plants each bearing seed according to their own kind. Isn't that tremendous when you think about it? A marigold flowers beautifully and produces seeds so more marigolds will grow the following year. The same is true of every flower. Sad but true, however, the same can be said of weeds. All the weeds of tomorrow are in the seeds of today. The origin of that is also found in Genesis at Chapter 3:18. From a beautiful garden to a thorny weed patch. Isn't that sad? In ''people'! terms, this lovely statement about tomorrow's flowers says to each one that God made you with potential to become something - either a beautiful flower to bloom, grow, and glorify Him in His Kingdom, or a weed that serves the Kingdom of Satan and chokes out, and destroys that which is God glorifying. The difference is in the gardener. If Christ is your Savior, He also is your gardener and He will prune and cultivate you into a choice flower for a Heavenly bouquet. If Satan is your gardener he will prune and cultivate you into such a poisonous weed that at the end of your life there will be only one thing left to be done and that will be to be uprooted and destroyed forever. Lynden Christian school has, by God's grace, through many different persons and methods prayerfully tried to cultivate you into an image of Christ, the Rose of Sharon. You must trust Him totally to blossom beautifully throughout your life and into eternity. The potential is there. Respectfully in Christ, Ben Boxum = _. .1s sufficient. Principal Mr. Garris Timmer Dear Mr. Timmer, Lynden Christian has been an integral part of your life for 36 years. The first 12 of these years you were a student and receiving what Lynden Christian had to offer. The remaining 24 years were years of giving to Lynden Christian as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Your teaching hours in the chemistry-physics classroom, your patient guiding hours as a principal have left their impact with students and colleagues alike. These hours of giving have left a lasting impact because they were based ona deep rooted conviction that ''in all things He should have pre-eminence ! and therefore Christian Education is a vital means of ''training up a child in the way he should go!'. { i i We're confident that these 24 years of giving were also gratifying years of receiving for you as you observed the physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of hundreds of young people. And we trust as you follow the Lord's leading in new areas, you'll always remember this part of your life as having been a fulfilling way to serve the Lord. Please consider this letter as a thank-you from all your present and former students and colleagues. i 3 | School Board Yours in Christ, The Annual Staff STANDING: Dennis Gross, Ben Boxum, John Hoksbergen, Arlyn Plagerman, Ed Henken, Wayne Brink, Glen Terpstra. Seery SCHOLTEN’ The musical this year was given in the fall instead of the spring, on November 23, 24 and 25% The musical was basically the story of Jesus, told and sung by Peter, the Witness, and other men and women who knew the Master best. These first disciples were no different from the men and women who have been following Jesus ever since. The cast portrayed the early disciples as they were: plain people, most of them, with jobs, families and responsibilities. We appreciate the hard work the cast and directors put into this musical. They provided inspiration, and insights into the life of Jesus Christ. Because of this, we can call this year's musical a success. , em - ity ais Greg Ackerman Nadine Baar Brenda Bierlink Janelle Brink Mary Broersma Monty Cobb Laurie De Boer Gene De Young Karen Dykman Terry Engels Craig Geleynse Kaylene Hamstra Marlene Hoekstra Brenda Honcoop Diane Huizenga Janet Huizenga Jeri Huleatt Karla Kok Jeff Kok Shelly Kok CAST Lorrie Korevaar Ben Kornelis Kris Kramer Heidi Kramer Susan Lankhaar Karin Likkel Kim Mellema Bradd Nymeyer Mark Rabe Sandy Roosendaal Rhonda Rupke Marlys Schuyleman Sharon Stegink Tom VanBeek Scott Vande Kieft Gaye Vander Giessen Heather Vander Veen Debbie Van Mersbergen Shawn Van Dyken Barb VanZanten Bruce Vermeer Ronda Winter Karrin Zylstra J ;z Ce . We appreciate his hard work, and all that he has done for basketball at Lynden Christian. First In State! On February 19th the Lady Lyncs traveled to Ellensburg and the State Tournament, hoping to do as well as they had the previous year. And they did-except they went one step further. In the first game they defeated previously unbeaten Forks 56-42. Next they handily beat Goldendale 43-31. Then came Kings Garden, who had beaten them at district. The Lyncs pulled together and were in the championship with a 41-31 victory. Another highlight was the Northwest Washington Fair where the chapter showed over 30 animals. Randy Kortus, an alumni member, did an excellent job in Fitting and Showing where he won Grand Champion. Besides the challenge it has taught me many things; not only about writing, but life in general. I was taught something very special and that is when I relied on God everything seemed easier. Yes, I admit there were times when I wanted to give up and just quit, yet there is the desire to see it through to the end. The staff this year was great especially when it came to ideas, and just talking. When the going got tough, the Hi Lite staff got tougher. The editor is only as good as the staff and the support they give. Things were accomplished and things failed, but through it all we came a little closer, and I, a little closer to God. Hopefully we can learn from the bad times as well as the good. . In representing our school this year I have seen more and more, that because we are a Christian school, what we do is looked on as a Christian example. We must be careful that whatever we do is an example of what a true Christian should be. I have enjoyed representing Lynden Christian this year in all the various things I have done. Based on the popular novel by Harper Lee, the story took place in a small town of Maycomb, Alabama in 1935. Conflicts arose when Atticus Finch defended a Negro falsely accused of attacking a white girl. The drama was a flash-back as recalled by Jean Louise Finch (Atticus! daughter) when she revisited the area as an adult. From the Editor. . | Dear Students of LCHS, It's been a busy year, and now only one or two pages are left to complete in the 1979 Excelsior. ‘ It's been a privilege to have been your annual editor. I hope that these pages have pictured your memories of the year. Our goal, as a staff, was to put out a yearbook that would please everybody and, most of all, our God. I hope that you, and that He can say to us ''Well done!!! Special thanks goes to: Mr. Hof, who patiently answered all my questions, -to my staff who provided input and kept things crazy, -to the people at Donette Studios who did a lot of photography work and were always eager to help. Above all, I thank the Lord for this opportunity and the strength He gave to meet it. I'm praying that all your tomorrows are filled with flowers.
