After spending the morning at the Seattle Center where the class ate lunch at the Food Circus, they enjoyed an afternoon boat tour of the Seattle Harbor. The seniors then traveled to Pizza and Pipes where they filled up on pizza and pop. After dinner they returned to the Seattle Center and watched the Ice Follies which had to be the highlight of the day. The class then returned to Lynden (except for a snack at McDonald's) tired but happy. at im ieee: pens he UE Wg Bp xe Saba aii ye ee sae sInyWOY 13095 ed 4S ‘Iamseary ‘apog ; Uaiey {Uaptseig adIA ‘yYBSuturaey Atay f4uapisaig ‘smyI0y quaptsaid gsy mox W095 fAreqaioag ‘uayAq ue, ATIUWIY :SYyqDIasO ‘a's’ Vv aUIOD 0} SIeah 1OJ utaysAs [OOYDS mo uodn T[Te} 0} enutWUOD BuTssatq styy Avy ‘shem Aueur ul jI passatq sey ay pue seat Jayjoue IOF utajsAs TOOYDS Mo YIM Udaq sey ysIIYD 1I aureys 0} }0U ‘auteU s,poy5 0} ArO[Z ButsIq 0} 1aquraurar ysnut am ‘sadTjejUasaidar Bulaq puy SaT}IAT}Oe IJay}0 pue sjuada 3urz10ds y8nomj Toouds mo ywasaidai Tle am ‘I ynoge yUTY) NOA Fr 4nq ‘1eah ysed ayy UI [OOYDS sty} JUasaidar O} auUI IOF JOUOY Ue UV—Aq S,}] sjljaueq Juapmys Aueul JO} atl} tay} JO YONu saats yorum AYMoeyT JUaT[IOxXa Ue pey 2A,aMm pue ‘Iva sTyy sjUapTys Meu SUTULODTaM UT gol auTZ e PIp ap, TOOYDS mo jo sjutod poo3 ay} raquinujno jou op s8ury} asay} 384} Addey ut,] 19% SUapnys MOTTA} Jo s8ulBuojaq ay} pue Aq1adoid Jooyos ay} Oadsa1 0} UIeaT OSTe pfnoys aM YUTYy] [ ‘SyUapNjs UeIpeueD ay} YIM drysuonejer moO UI JOT aAOIdUIT pfnods aM y azIed skeme you are am ‘[ooyos ueljsiIyD e pusye aM YSnoyIly aimjnj ay} UL pUe MOU SIY} WOW jIJaUaq IIEM nod jey} adoy [| pue ‘uonNeonpa uerystry jo asodind ay} st att Jo yoadse Arava ul ystIyD Butaas aSI9ATUN mo jnoysnosy} yAoMtpuey sty sAeTdstp apy AeM ay} UT ST pOD mo [nfJ1aMmod Moy Ua—as aAeY I SasseTO 90q J9Y Mo se [JAM Se sotshyg aYI] Sasse[O UI Jno auto. Heeringa. sys Nm This year's foreign exchange student is Ilse Vogel from Pretoria, South Africa. While attending LC she has become very special to the students and faculty, and will certainly be missed by all. Thank you Ilse for sharing with us your country, culture and self. May God bless you now and in the future. To all my friends at Christian High: It was in May '76 when I received my place ment papers, and included was a paper which told me the school that I was to attend. The first thought that came to me when I saw a Christian high school was that it was going to be something like a Catholic school with nuns roaming around. Arriving in Lynden, I was reassured and told that it was just like an ordinary school, but I guess I was only fully assured the first day I walked in LCH. I write in all truthfulness that this has been a wonderful year. It would never have been this way if it hadn't been for all | the friendliness of the kids and also the teachers. We don't always realize how lucky we are to be in a Christian school | where the education and activities are God-centered. Lynden Christian is really a unique school (not only because we get state championship once in a while). Having visited a few other schools, I still think LCH is the best. When I go back I will really miss most of all my family, the Hollanders, that I have stayed with. Apart from them making it possible for me to be here, they have just been a wonderful family to live with and I really appreciate it. Next are all my friends. Having classes with freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors, they vary in ages and I always felt as if I was treated as one of you. Of course, I will miss basketball. Those jam-packed, boiling hot Friday evenings in the gym will always be remembered as well as treasured. Last but not least are the track turnouts I took part in, having butterflies in my stomach on Fridays, even though I knew that I would get another last in the meet in the afternoon. I must say I did get a first one time, but unfortunately I was the only participant, as Mr. Ypma clearly announced. I could keep on and on writing about all the good things I have enjoyed (e.g. state), but I'll end by just saying thank you'' to everyone who has made this year a wonderful and tremendous one, one that I will never forget. Everyone made me feel welcome even if it was after asking a ride home for the tenth time. When ever anyone comes and visits South Africa, I would really appreciate it if you would come and drop in. I might even give you a ride on my pet elephant or lion! Lots of love, DEBATE The debate activity this year took place in the first semester. Shortly after sch ool began, the group attended a workshop at the Seattle Center put on by W.W.S.C. to introduce the year's topic: 'That a comprehensive program of penal reform should be adopted throughout the U.S. In October the freshman team, Danielle Malone and Barb Van Zanten, participated in a district-wide practice tournament at Burlington. January saw both teams at- tending the tournament held at Seattle Pacific College. we RSS Ges a STANDING: Daren De Boer, Harvey Smit, Larry Korthuis, Joel Spoelstra, Lance Hoekema, Sid Koopman, Mr. De Haan-Advisor, Mary Jane Hamstra, Kim Bode, Alice Verbree, Bryon Nydam, Loren Vanden Top, Ken Dykman, Jeff Boonstra, Guy Laird. Lynden Christian FFA Chapter's year was centered around the Northwest Washington Fair. For the first time, five chapter members exhibited ten animals. They exhibited the Grand Champion and Jr. Champion Holsteins along with the top award in Fitting and Showing of dairy cattle. The Dairy Judging team's year was also highlighted at the NWWF by receiving the first place trophy in dairy cattle judging. Steve Vander Griend was one of ten state finalists for the National Dairy Judging Team. Currently, there are fifty-two Chapter members. During the month of March, twenty-two of these members participated at the Ferndale Jamboree. They received first place awards in Dairy Judging and in Crops and Vegetables. LC’S NEW ADDITION It's finally here. Our new shop is finished and put to use. The new shop has four times the floor space of the old building giving students and teachers much more room to work in. The LC's Alumni has given money for our new welders and lathes along with a plywood saw, table saw, and metal shears. Several of the machines from the old building have been moved to the shop. There are storage rooms for steel and Mr. Taylor has made cupboards for students' projects and hand tools, There are two new classrooms for Mr. De Haans' Agri- culture classes and any other class which cannot be held in the old building. The shop should prove to be a valuable addition to our school, HER ASSISTANTS STANDING: Kathy Visser, Glenda Dotinga, Adria Petter, Debbie Boxum, Jennifer Hornstra, Marlae Timmer. Once again, Director Del Vande Kerk turned out an excellent choir. Besides giving concerts in various churches, they also entered the San Juan Music Educators Competition held at WWSC in which they received the highest rating possible. The choir also went on a three day tour to Sunnyside where they performed in both the local church and school. A concert was also given at Kings Garden High School in Seattle. Taking the place of Varsity Singers this year was the group Sonlight. '' Comprised of select senior and junior choir members, the group gave many performances at schools, banquets, and in local churchs. Following graduation, on June 6, the Sonlight group left on a ten day tour to the San Francisco area, stopping in Marysville, Olympia, and Salem, Oregon on the way. In San Francisco they sang in three area churches and for a Christian school in the heart of Chinatown. A day was also spent sightseeing. Even though the van was burglarized in San Francisco and had to undergo major repairs in Oregon, forcing the Sonlighters to take a bus home, they still managed to have a great time that will long be remembered by all. Hours of hard work and practice resulted in a very successful year for the LCHS Orchestra. The highlight of Orchestra '77 was their tour to Gresham, Oregon, April 15-17, where they participated in an orchestra competition involving groups from six states and one group from Japan. Although they didn't re- ceive any trophies, they were awarded an honorable mention. Other highlights were the many concerts in churches, schools, museums, etc. The year has been a great one with much improve- ment and anticipation for '77-'78. A special thanks goes to their director, Mrs, Ethel Crook, for all the time and effort she has put forth. 4; J ere we i NS ia RRR acm ae BACK ROW: Loren Van Beek, Laurel Zylstra, Gina De Vries, Francis Steinfort, Bev Mellema, Barb Van Zanten, Deedee Vander Pol, Ronda Winter, Dawn Slater, Sandy Roosendaal, Sharon Stegink. The band also performed well in numerous winter and spring concerts and accompanied the choir on a tour to Sunnyside. HI LITE HAS “HI LITES” This year as I took over the editor's pen I was apprehensive about the staff since everyone was new. But before the first issue was out I realized that they had a lot of originality and responsi- ability. We started several new things for the Hi Lite including features dealing with such topics as TV, catechism, dating, and gowkish bufoonery. Several hi lites for this year included getting a first class rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, getting our own staff cartoonist and going out for our annual dinner. I would like to thank all who helped especially Mr. Ypma as advisor and Ellen Cammenga as my assistant editor. Also, I thank the student body for supporting us. However, when the dust had settled after the following game with Nooksack, the scoreboard read 33-6 in favor of Nooksack even though the Lyncs had destroyed the Pioneers statistically, Coach Ypma called it the weirdest game I ever coached, Things went from bad to worse and continued to do so until finally they ended their frustrations with two re- sounding wins over Mount Baker and Blaine to close the season, BACK ROW, L-R: Mr. Vander Haak, Jeff Brink, Doug Vander Pol, Rod Blankers, Duane Huisingh, Gary Van Weerdhuizen, Larry Tjoelker, Bruce Kok. The JV Lyncs had a disappointing season winning only two out of six games, The team lacked size, especially in their offensive line, and, there- fore, had a tough time moving the football, With fifteen or twenty sophomores returning next year, the future looks promising for the young Lyncs. TENNIS TEAMS THRIVE Tennis still isn't classed as a varsity sport in this league, but that didn't deter the netters from putting out a good season. Coach Al Ramerman looks on this season with fondness. He will miss several seniors next year, including 1 singles Joel Gibson and half of 1 doubles Craig Engels. However, plenty of talent hangs around for next year and Mr. Ramerman has good reason for optimism. Girls' tennis managed to thrive this year, despite some very tough league and county Opposition. Coach Al Ramerman was very happy with the squad and felt they came along well as the season progressed. Finally at district, the final blow was struck when the long-winded runners were nosed out of fourth place and a trip to state. Next year will be promising, since two juniors and several soph- omores return to anchor the squad. This year a first happened when the girls formed a cross country team. A nucleus of six runners made up the team, and of those, only one senior will leave. Such was the case for the girls' varsity volleyball team, which lost several matches by falling in the third game by two points, Still, successful seasons are not measured by wins and losses, but by the effort put into a contest. Maybe the volleyball team really did have a winning season, The JV volleyball team consistently played well enough to win seven matches and lose four. Most of these JV's will be the varsity next year, making the future look bright. A determined new coach did not rant it to be. Harold Terpstra took over head coaching position when Bill De Hoog died last year, three weeks after his team took home the state crown. The new coach told his team at the beginning of the season, that if they set their minds to it, they could follow that act. It wasn't an easy year for Terpstra to take over. Lynden went undefeated in league play, and three teams had to scramble for the second district spot. Third place was a very respectable finish for a first- place coach. The district tournament disappointed everyone. After falling to Darrington in the opener, hopes soared high as the Lyncs clobbered Kings' Garden and then defeated Nooksack's Pioneers in a tight overtime to advance to the last round. An unknown combination of things destroyed any ideas of state placing as Meridian wrecked the Lyncs' chance to go to state for the first time ever. Kent De Hoog filled in Harold Terpstra's shoes when Terpstra moved up to take the new head coach position. De Hoog apparently learned his homework well. He himself was coached by Terpstra several years ago, and he returned to do a very successful job. In his first season, Lynden Christian's JV team finished in second place for the third time in as many years, topped only by Lynden in the final league standings. After dropping one early season meet to Mount Baker, the girls were undefeated in all the rest of their meets until they got to state. All in all, they captured five trophies, the first when they won the Christian School Invitational, and then another when they got first place in county. They swept the Blaine Relays, and moved a step up from last year to capture the district championship. From there, Claire Bouwman, Esther Vander Griend, and Kim De Waard went on to the state meet. Claire took a second place in the 80-yard low hurdles, and finished seventh in the 220-yard dash and also the high jump, while Esther came in fourth in the 80-yard low hurdles. Kim De Waard placed third in the shot, and these girls' efforts enabled the team to place seventh overall. Congratulations to the track team for an sepecially fine season. TEAM CAPTURES COUNTY The freshman boys had an excellent season this year and it was climaxed by winning the county championship. The team's strong points were the field events like Chuck Te Velde in the shot put and John Kroontje in the vault. In running events, Deric Bouma was tops in the mile. INTRAMURALS Once again students relied heavily on intramurals to clear their study-racked minds. Whether playing indoors or out, in rain or snow, everyone gets enthused and puts in effort seldom equalled in the classroom. Lynden Christian's students have benefited from this program, since many students who no longer are required to take P.E. still get exercise from intramural activities, and those who don't participate in varsity or junior varsity sports get a chance to show their skills in a smaller way. Without a doubt their attention was held-- better yet--we were captivated by the performance of Lynn Van Buren Mr, Magic ! as the featured entertainment of this year's Jr. -Sr. Banquet. The theme was ''Magic Moments to Remember ! --and for all those involved it was just that--a memory to be cherished for a lifetime. The theme was carried out superbly in all the aspects of the banquet which was hailed to be one of the best ever. The decorations reflected the theme with a stunning effect. The star-studded balls hanging from || foil-covered lights and the fountain had a magical effect on students alike. The weather held up its end of the bargain perfectly. | The clear, warm sky occasionally visited by a welcomed breeze, added additional magic to the evening; it also made the idea of the outside punchbowl a success. Part of the program consisted of a slide presentation of the seniors now and in the past. This tearjerker for some, was narrated by Ellen Cammenga and Rod Blankers, q at eh Bo ane é sSae se ase But the highlight of the evening was, without a doubt, the magic show. Rev. Van Buren had us all amazed, (including Sheryl Haak) as he did everything from making candles disappear to making doves appear. What's more is that he also had a good message in it for all present which made it different from just your orinary magic show. Now that it's over all we have left of it is the memory of hard work for some, for others the nervousness of entertaining or for most just being there that will never be forgotten. SPIRIT WEEK The days from January 31 to February 4 were special ones for Lynden Christian. During this week, the student body had a chance to show their school spirit by wearing outfits varying from little kid- dies to clowns. Each day during noon hour, unusual con- tests between classes were held, cli- maxed by a special assembly on Friday to declare the-winners of the various Mr. and Miss competitions. In addition to this, the winner of the class competition was announced, which was traditionally won by the seniors. All in all, it was a fun experience for those involved and perhaps played a part in unifying the student body. ooo? Pty ee OG, OO OOge Woe yO Z588 yt eS oe ue MT CP? As students we are thankful to him for helping us develop a Christian attitude and a God-consciousness and think he's the greatest. When you talk about life, as this 1977 Excelsior is doing, one can do nothing better then to turn to the Bible. One can say all kinds of sentimental and flowery things about life as many poets and song writers have. Some of the sentiments may even cause a tear drop to trickle down one's check. But the Bible, in its straight forward way, gets at the truth with such proclamations as Ps. 27:1 'The Lord is the strength of my life. Ps. 30:5 In His favor is life. Ps. 36:9 For with Thee is the fountain of life, In John 11:25 - Jesus states I am the ressurection and the life -- Rev. 2:7 speaks of the tree of life! - Rev. 2:10 speaks of the crown of life’; Rev. 21:27 speaks of the Lamb's book of life! - Rev. 22:1 speaks of the river of the water of life. : The Bible is not about life but it is the Book of Life. From cover to cover God speaks historically, prophetically, and poetically, but always the message is the same. The message is that God gives life through Jesus Christ - abundant life! Apart from Him is darkness and death. John 20:30-31 concludes Many other signs therefore did Jesus in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book: but these are written that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God; and that believing ye may have LIFE in His name. FROM THE EDITOR: Dear Students of LC: Another year, another annual, another editor ... Now that the 1976-77 school year is almost over, I would like to thank Mr. Hof and my staff, Gale Johnson, and the many others who in some way helped make this annual a happening. In closing I would like to leave with you these thoughts: Day follows day, week follows week, and month follows month. How quickly a year is past! Today, it is time for looking back, a time for remembering, a time for counting God's goodnesses; a time for looking back over a pathway which is still as glowing as when we first glimpsed it. For the Lord has sustained us! May each day be spent in building up the beautiful life that God has outlined for you. —_ STAN’S CABINETS AND APPLIANCES CUSTOM AND FACTORY BUILT CABINETS BATHTUB REFINISHING EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD BANK WHY NOT IET US BE YOURS RAINIER BANK 700 FRONT ST.
