These pages hold some of the laughter, the tears, the joys, and the sorrows of the year 1971. They are a collection of thoughts, pictures, and mem- ories to be reminised over through the passing ages. Although there is no specific theme to this years EXCELSIOR we have more or less tried to “Tell It Like It Is.’ There is a prevailing tone of the unity given to us by Christ. Each person, while retaining his individuality, has contributed some more than others to leaving his special mark on the lives of others. Each person has a responsi- bility to himself, his fellow man, and to his God. As was stated by John Donne, “‘No man is an island entirely of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main...Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in man- kind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” TABLE OF CONTENTS Activities 25 .« oi 2s eee eee ee Organizations 9.4. nsec jae ee ee ee eet Athletics 42.209 ac pe ee AGMinistFation 6.5 fe he occ ee eee ee eT Underclassmen =... 3. 3 Se ee eee SENIOUS sees ks np cae oe ee an Se ee LSERRER INC ee See We, the Excelsior Staff, Dedicate This 1971 Excelsior to You, Miss Zylstra Forty-seven years may seem quite a long period of time for most of us. Yet, as the years went by, Miss Zylstra has put forth a lot of precious time and talent into her services at L.C.H.S. We thank God that He has given her these years at L.C.H.S. and hope she has enjoyed them. We hope that as you look back on those years, Miss Zylstra, you may recall the wonderful times, the trials and experiences in your services here. Was Chapel time just worthless? No! We don’t believe it was! God was really there. He could be seen guiding the mighty Lyncs to their six-place State victory. He was seen in the results of a fantastic spring Re- treat. Yes, God was there at L.C.H.S.—but not only was He seen in the good times. We all went through the bad ones, too, and God could be seen then also. Perhaps at the time we really didn’t see Him or understand why things had to be the way they were, but He, was still there guiding, protecting, and comforting. The photographers spent many hours getting that perfect picture, while the Lit. Staff exercised their writing genius in describing the action of the year. Putting to use the skills gained in typing class, the typists put in legible articles the effort of the Lit Staff, while the Business Managers were as- suring the financial success of our year-book. Football | Turnout began in August with new enthusiasm as the Lyncs looked forward to playing in their new stadium; the largest in the league. With many Letterman back and a great coach to back them, the team kept one eye on the championship as they started off the season with no losses. Injuries soon took their eye from the championship but not from determination. It was a very profitable season and one of which they can be proud. The Student Body would also like to thank the Alumni for all they did in making the football stadium possible. Season’s Football Record 6 Wins - 3 Losses Opponent’s SENIORS ROW 1: A.Berendsen, B. Additional points were required for letters. Intramurals proved to be chal- lenging for each girl involved. Superintendent-Mr. Boxum ey Peudt Cikcarls.2 It is said of today’s youth that they are more direct and honest in their expression of what they think. The state- ment, “Tell it like it is”, is a trade mark of today’s young person. This forthrightness is hailed as a great virtue. Some politicians, writers, artists, psychologists, philosophers and religious leaders “‘proclaim liberty throughout the land” from the former age of stuffy puritianism. Many make themselves ridiculous by clamoring for a place on the band wagon of the “‘tell it like it is” genera- tion. Some say Jeremiah, Isaiah, Jesus and Paul didn’t pull any punches in their teaching—they “‘told it like it was”’ for their generation. Let’s be done with hypocritical beating around the bush. Let’s ‘“‘tell it like it is.”’ The Bible has direction for us here. The answer to the virtue or vice of “‘telling it like it is’’ is decided by the motive for your telling it at all. Every Old Testament prophet prefaced his frankness with a “This is God’s message to you’’. The motive was one of love. Love and honor God in all things and all will be well. Jesus’ most powerful and stern rebukes to the people were done from love. I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, Jesus said. Follow Me and all will be well. , So it must be for you and me. We must “‘tell it like it is’? because Jesus tells us to do that. But it must be the love of Jesus in your heart and mine that causes us to tell it at all and then to tell it like it is. And this is the way it is—that God was in Christ, restoring the world to Himself, I] Cor. 5:19. That God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that ANYONE who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life, John 3:16. That if you seek the Kingdom of God FIRST, ALL THINGS you need will be provided for you, Matthew 6:33. Not perfectly, but sincerely, prayerfully and persistently, those responsible for your instruction at Lynden Chris- tian do indeed tell that most basic teaching like it is. By God’s grace may you in your generation do likewise. Y ours in Christ, Ben H. Boxum, Superintendent. the A.S.B. as well as being helpful in many other ways. They traveled to New Halem, where they toured the Gorge Dam and the rock gardens. After a delicious dinner at Gorge Inn, they toure d Diablo and Ross Dams. That evening they climaxed their day at the Ice Follies in the Seattle Center. baAcGas laureate The traditional Baccalaureate Service was held in the Bethel Christian Reformed Church. Rev. John Hofman spoke on the theme “Shine Your Light So Everyone Can See.” Mr. Del Vande Kerk favored us with a trumpet solo. We were once again reminded to shine our lights for Christ always. OER ANN Graduation night made us realize that all good things must come to an end, but even better yet, that there was a new life ahead. Gerald Rutgers, our class speaker, captured our thoughts and goals as we look back on all memories of those twelve years, and looked forward to Shining our Light for Christ in the future years. Songleader, Kieth Timmer lead us in our class song ““Amazing Grace.” Vie Class Officers SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: B.Knutzen, Rep.
