Like all preceding years this year, too, is just.a memory. . .a memory of the funny and the sad captured in candid photos, of organizations and clubs, banquets and: sports activities so much like and yet somehow different from the years before. The year 1970 has been. a busy one-- sometimes so hectic with what had to be done that there never seemed enough time for everything. Now, when another school year has come to aclose, the activities have ceased, and every- thing has been said and done, we can relax, take time to look back, and say with pride that 1970 was a good year. But just.as 1970 marks the beginning of anew decade for the world so it does for us in God. The end of a school year is never really an end. No specific theme holds this Excelsior together. Instead it is simply dedicated to recording and preserving the memories of the stu- dents and faculty who fill its pages. And we think that is theme enough. It was all part of the formal initiation of LCHS’s newest arrivals at the traditional Mixer. Upperclassmen got plenty of laughs watching blindfolded freshmen boys, carry freshmen girls across the floor. For some this presented a few difficulties-- especially when the girl turned outto beanother boy. Then came the problem of.find- ing a partner for refreshments. Girls and guys waited nervously for their magic number to be called. But soon the evening was over and the freshmen could truly say that now they were a part. of Lynden- Christian High — UN EE School. ; Mes chate edi ne P Twirp Week... The Tables Turned i _-The tables were turned at LCHS during Twirp | Week, and the girls were seen timidly approaching their favorite guy in search of.a date. It was the girls’ uuty to carry the boys’ books and open doors for them during the week. On the final evening of the week a party was given in honor of the couples. The main feature was a version of the Newly Wed Game with teachers and students as couples. Refresh- ments topped off the evening. ae _ Jesse Stuart. One of the most impressive services of the year was one done en- tirely by the students. A special group sang songs from “Tell It Like It Is”. Other special: num- bers were given and several stu- dents gave their personal testi- monies for. Christ. Student participation in chapel was very rewarding this year. It was just one of the many ways. students and faculty could = show’ their love for God in their school ac- tivities. ASB Assembly. . . Government Changes Hands Excitement ran high during the week of ASB _ elections. Colorful posters decorated the halls and witty stickers decorated the students. Campaign managers dashed around frantically making up speeches and round- ing up kids for skits. But finally the tension was over and Rick Holleman handed the gavel over to the new president, Kent DeHoog. Assisting Kent in the coming year will be Bryan Brink. Taking down minutes will be Carol Groen, and Linda Geleynse will handle the finances. The choir is constantly kept busy prac- ticing for numerous programs and concerts. Thanksgiving and Christmas saw the choir pouring out their hearts in song to God. The high light of the year was a trip to Seattle to perform at the annual Spring Musicale. Choir mem- ories were preserved in a record the choir made in April. Complete with new outfits and a well- earned sense of accomplishment, the band and their director, Mr. Del Vande Kerk, travelled to Seattle for the annual Pacific Northwest Musicale where they received an excellent A-rating. The “brains’’ of LCHS made their way — into two scholarly organizations: Torch Club and the Debate Team. To gain membership and remain in Torch Club a student must earn 36 points each year. This is done through good grades and by holding positions of leadership. Seventy - three sophomores, juniors, and _ seniors made up this year’s Torch Club. Faced with the topic ‘Resolved: That Congress should prohibit U.S. unilateral military intervention in foreign countries”, the Debate Team spent many hours in preparation. The team began their season by hosting a tournament at LCHS. For the numerous concerts, programs, and drama productions of the school the ushers were kept busy seating those who attended. Once the team was District bound, the team and followers alike set their sites on the State Tour- nament in Tacoma. With one win and one loss after the first two rounds of play, the Lyncs faced fellow Whatcom County teams. They defeated the formidalbe Nooksack five, but found their cross town rivals too tough to take. Despite the disappointment of defeat, the Lyncs placed eighth in the state. The sports activities which provided fun and exercise for the girls included basketball, volleyball, bowling, softball, and others. By participating in these sessions each girl could earn points toward a school sweater. The rules governing this points system were changed this year so that. more points were required to initially obtain a sweater, but fewer were needed for additional letters. In this way the program remained competitive and challenging for each girl. Ze 0 = =e QZ = nf gE = a XQ Superintendent The year was 1970--- You might have added, A.D. According to the way time is reckoned, this isn’t the first 1970. There was a 1970 B.C., you know. Wonder what life was like in 1970 B.C.? Oh well, it doesn’t really matter. We live in 19702 A new decade! A new era? Some would have us think so, but already on January 1, 1970 the news wasn’t really that much better than it was on December 31, 1969. People laughed; people mourned; people loved; people hated; people rescued life; people took life---and the new decade looked mo- notonously like the preceding one. You know something else? Soon 1970 A.D. will have much in common with 1970 B.C. The verb “was” becomes the common denominator for 1970 B.C. and 1970 A.D. Both will soon be ‘was’ years---past--- gone---un-recallable. Does this depress you? Then read on. in God’s word there are some beautiful truths if you are one that becomes depressed with the fleetingness of time. Listen to | Peter 1:25, “The word of the Lord abides forever.’”” The decades come and go but not God’s word. Listen again to Psalm 31:15, ‘““My times are in Thy (God’s) hand.” Can you think of a better place for them? You know what time it is? 1970, yes, A.D., yes, but Hosea, a B.C. man wrote, ‘Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of steadfast love; break up the fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord that He may come and rain salvation upon you.” The year was 1970, but the word of the Lord abides forever. 1970 A.D. is only another year in God’s purposeful march through history. We are a year closer to Christ’s return, and then time will be no more. Romans 13 summarized it well: “You know what hour it is, how it is full time for you to wake from sleep.” For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone-- the day is at hand---. The year was 1970, but thank God the word of the Lord is forever. God bless you. STANDING: B.Bode, Asst. SchoolBoard. Dedication and Efficiency The hiring of personnel, adopting and approving school policy, and maintaining a Christian atmosophere are just a few of the responsibilities of the twelve members of the school board. They are concerned with the entire educational enterprise which involves finances, equipment, building, and grounds. Being a member of the school board takes a great deal of time and dedication. It is a job that receives much criticism, but the members can also feel a sense of satisfaction in serving God. The annual staff would like to express their gratitude to the school board for a job well done. We also wish to acknowledge Mr. Marvin Vanderpol and the countless hours he has spent as principal. For many years he worked diligently on many tasks both large and small to keep LCHS running smoothly and efficiently. But even with his busy schedule, he always had time to chat should someone drop into his workstrewn office with something on their mind. To you, Mr. Vanderpol, a very sincere thank you. After the party the entire class trooped down to Shakey’s for all the pizza they could eat. All the fun and laughter more than made up for the blisters and indigestion. Early Friday morning, May 8, three chartered buses full of sleepy but excited seniors left Lynden for a day of fun. Even the drizzling rain couldn't dampen their spirits. First on the agenda was a ferry ride to Bremerton and a tour of the Bremerton Naval Ship Yard. Next the seniors took a tour of the Underground City in Seattle. The evening brought a group of tired but happy seniors to the Seattle Colosseum where everyone enjoyed the Ice Follies. Baccalaureate... Our God Is Real Bethel Christian Reformed Church was the setting of the traditional Baccalaureate services for the 1970 gradu- ating class. Anita Jacobson sang ‘’Oh, Rest in the Lord”, and Mr. John VanderArk spoke on the class theme: Our God Is Real. And for the final time in their high school career the Seniors were reminded of God’s great power and how REAL Heis. After four years of study, the seniors finally put away their high school books and marched up the aisle to receive their diplomas. Keith VanderPol captured the goals and emotions of the graduates in his speech on the theme: Our God Is Real. Bob Libolt led the graduates in their class song, ‘’I Believe God Is Real.’ After many congratulations and tear- ful goodbyes, the graduates set out with God to new Horizons. B.Libolt, President, K.Vander Pol, Vice President. L.Kok, Treasurer. The seniors found it very difficult to accept the fact that they were leaving Lynden Christian behind. As they take a step into the future the seniors will always remember the friends, the experiences, the smiles, and the tears they shared to- gether at LCHS. Their last year brought the seniors closer together, and most of all, it brought them closer to God. They chose as their class motto ‘Our God Is Real.’” As they go their separate ways, leaving teachers, parents, and friends behind, the belief that God is real will firmly grip their hearts and lives.
