PPA | | WAT 4 q ae Es ee SRR Si 2 See — ies ah Ts LYNDEN CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL = POOL Estee en ExOELSIOR Lynden Christian High Lynden, Washington Foreward The word “Freedom” appears on almost every page of American History, for from the docking of the May- flower to the capture of the Pueblo, men have worked, struggled and died so that freedom could survive. Un- fortunately, freedom has been abused as men have tried violence, destruction and misconduct to exercise theirs’. The theme of the ‘68-69’ Excelsior is Freedom. Its purpose is to review the freedoms which we exercised throughout the year at Lynden Christian High. Though we were not aware of it as we engaged in busy routines and gay activities, we have exercised freedom, not because we have fought for it but because God has given it. We have enjoyed political freedom by which we could enjoy and develop other freedoms, and with them we have defined our own course of high school life by choosing and rejecting the opportunities given us. Yet most important is the freedom we have in Christ — not a freedom to do as we will, but a freedom from man’s greatest bondage. While men have fought to possess an artificial, temporary freedom, we as Chris- tians can be comforted and strengthened by knowing that we have a genuine, unchanging, eternal freedom. In serving as our se- nior class sponsor, freshman track coach, and sponsor for girls intramurals, he has earned the respect of all. We hope that God will continue to bless Lyn- den Christian with the services of this capable and dedicated teacher. To you, Mr. Blankers, Thank-you, from the students of Lynden Christian High School Every Tuesday and Friday students exercise that most precious of all freedoms in chapel. Recognizing the Giver of all liberty, they seek to praise Him in song, speech, and prayer. Thanks is offered for the freedom that is eternal as ex- pressed in Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke bondage.” | | 11 What seemed an endless week of booster buttons, speeches, and skits fi- nally paid off for the four students who will be taking up their new student body offices. President Rick Holleman is now in charge of the gavel and assisted by vice-president, Wayne Kaemingk. As secretary, Cheryl Bode will record all the accomplishments of the student council while treasurer Kathy Heutink worries about its financial problems. A big thank-you goes to the officers of the ‘68- 69’ school year. Mixer — Twirp Week New Ideas at [Ge hles: Not all was books and study this past year. Freshmen were the star attraction as under- classmen, upperclassmen, and faculty were again scrambled together at the annual Mix- er. Time spent in anticipation was well-re- warded when students happily watched the frosh initiated into the mysteries of high school life. Games for all got everyone into the act during an enjoyable evening. The shoe was on the other foot during Twirp Week at Lynden Christian High. Girls were permitted to ask out that special boy they had had their eyes on while boys got a taste of waiting for a date. To give the girls a break, the student body provided entertain- ment at a party on the final night of the week. Mother’s Tea. Has a Iheme of “Spring Carousel” : | Smile now, pivot, a few more steps, and out the door. Another model sighed with relief as she left the long ramp stretched out in the chapel. This was the annual Mother’s Tea, under the theme of ‘Spring Carousel’’ given each year by the girls of the Home Economic classes with the freshmen providing the re- freshments. Judy Timmer and Brenda Kooy narrated as the girls modeled the different clothes they had sewed themselves. A few special numbers and a sa- lute to the mothers and daughters completed the evening. 13 ‘“A Man Called Berens Peter Marshall. 6. d04 c4 us neh ic Pn Gee on ee ee Catherine Marshall =: ie%.00 oe ona ee ee eo eee ee Ann Vander Giessen Peter JohnMarshall2 a: ..oc..¢--- eee Sage: Pa ape Peter Steiger Allan Talbot est eee oe els od ie ae ne Andy Visser Judith Bickle’. 9 3... a Bains 8 ate oe ee Lonnie De Boer Jesse:Bickle:: «10.4 (cu. cee = = eo a Mary Vander May Susan Grant. ec toil cu teres Senet G5 ee Barb Boxum Marian. The Debate Team debated on a topic involv- ing freedom. The essence of this topic was whether the U.S. government should conscript everyone. After a season of intensive study and hard competition the team, which placed sec- ond in Northern division and third in District, won a birth for the State tournament in Pull- man, Washington. The purpose of the German Club was to learn not only the German language but also her culture. This was done through attending several German church services and putting on a German Christmas party. On other occasions Mr. Boot, the club’s sponsor, showed the stu- dents slides of Germany and ended the year by taking the seniors of the club to the ““Schwar- zevald’’ (Black Woods) restaurant in Vancouver. SECOND ROW: Work, enjoyment, and ability are three ele- ments that went into another year of choir. Under their new director, Mr. Vande Kerk, choir members again this year enjoyed God- given freedom for using their musical talents. In November they participated in the Thanks- giving Festival and in December they present- ed a Christmas Concert along with the Band and Freshmen Choruses. Choir members again realized that singing wasn’t always fun, espe- cially at six o’zlock a.m. when they made an appearance at the Easter Sunrise Service. Al- though they were unable to attend the Spring Musicale in Spokane this year, they did take a day tour to Oympia and Tacoma. They also received an excellent rating at the Northwest Music Festival held at Sehome. Their last chance to give account of their ability and also their work was at the Annual Spring Concert. Thus another year filled with God’s praises was ended. 24 tain = eee ] R. Hendricks, K. Stap, K. Van Ry, M. Assink, R. Biesheuval, A. Warmink, S. Pilon, J. Doesburg, J. Vander Mey, K. Schol- ten, J. Twice monthly the Journalism class dis- tributes our school paper, the Hi- Lite. The staff puts in a lot of work, time and effort to edit a paper which will give students a chance to express their views, feelings and knowledge freely. The Hi-Lite touches on every phase of student life. During the school year of 1968 —1969, the Hi-Lite staff has pub- lished an excellent paper. Excelsior Staff To help each student relive his favorite moments, the annual staff attempted to cap- ture the events and emotions which pre- dominated the school year. The staff, with Mr. Hof as the new advisor, went to work- shops at the University of Washington and Sehome High School to acquire some of the needed skills. There the staff members learned the basics in layouts, writeups, pic- Editor: Ann Vander Giessen Assistant editor: Rhonda Vander Griend ture-taking, and managing the needed busi- ness. The teamwork required to coordinate these functions wasn’t easily achieved, but the annual staff hopes that despite its short- comings, it was successful not only in re- minding each student of his favorite mo- ments, but also reminding him of the free- dom which he was unconsciously enjoying throughout the entire year. In his first season as coach, Mr. De Hoog has a squad which claimed only two re- turning lettermen. Yet, neither the coach nor the team demonstrated inexperience. Through- out most of the season, the team retained the winner’s cup while it enjoyed the high state rat- ings. Besides winning the various trophies with their 19-4 record, they also won the sportman- ship trophy with their sportsmanlike behavior. Though we remember all of the fun and excite- ment the season provided, we should never for- get that we were able to participate only be- cause we were given the opportunity and free- dom to compete with other schools. Their time and effort made for an excellent Drill Team which everyone enjoyed. 46 To be a member of the L.C.H.S. Pep Club, it is necessary to be a Junior or Senior girl, show an enthusiastic interest in all school sports, and own a healthy pair of lungs to yell with. That’s Pep Club — the girls of the school backing up the boys. In their navy blue jumpers and white blouses, they faithfully attend all the games, and show the school spirit needed to help win. Not only did they show school spirit, but they also demonstrated the sportsmanlike conduct which helped win the sportsman- ship trophey. Besides backing up the cheerleaders, the Pep Club sold cookbooks and had bake sales to raise money for the All Sports Banquet. P. Klein, Treasurer, J. Vander Hoek, Secretary, B. There were only four seniors o n this year’s baseball squad which means that coach Mellema can look forward to an experienced and we hope a successful team next year. 49 This year the cross-country courses were lengthened to three miles from the former two mile courses, but this fact didn’t stop the Lyncs cross-coun- try team which was coached by Mr. Vander Laan. The team defeated ev- ery single ‘A’ team in the county and also defeated many double ‘A’ schools. At the district meet, which included eighteen schools not classi- fied according to size, the Lyncs squad placed sixth. Only Dave King- ma qualified for the state meet where he placed thirty-eighth. This year’s track team made big strides of im- provement. Though the year was one of continued rebuilding, two records were broken (mile relay and 2-mile run). Despite the fact that many of its mem- bers were young, the team placed third in county and sub-district under Mr. Ypma’s coaching. Top honors went to Dave Kingma, two-miler, who placed fourth in state and who also received the L.C.H.S. trackman of the year award. BACK ROW: G. Buma, G. Korthuis, R. Vander Yacht, S. Van- Mans, G. Junior High Track Team Freedom is a gift with a string attached. It can survive only if, with the death of one generation it is passed on to the next, untarnished and undiminished. Bt Ake Ea ie | : | i ‘ ee, te py J Superintendent It has been contended that man is not fully able to appreciate a blessing until it is denied him. The homely saying ‘‘you never miss the water until the well runs dry” really sums up this contention quite well. Children miss and appreciate their parents more after they leave home or after their parents are gone. Students frequently talk nostalgically about their school after they graduate. The blessing of freedom is no different. You only need read the Old Testament history of the Israelites to see how they forsook God who gave them freedom until they were taken into captivity, and then their psalms and writings became mournful dirges as they reflected upon the days when they were a free nation. More recent history and current events show that men and women will give their lives to be free. The East Berliner who risks all to gain freedom in West Berlin is a case in point. Now, while freedom is defined in many ways, real freedom is not possible apart from Jesus Christ. He said in John 8, verse 36, ‘‘If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” In bondage to Christ means liberation from sin. Liberation from sin means eternal freedom. In bondage to Satan means slavery to sin. Slavery to sin means eternal slavery. Many, many people think they are free if they can say what they want, do what they want (or think they want), always have their own way and live without any moral restraints of any kind. After tasting of all the so-called pleasures, they end up with no rest, no satisfaction, no peace, and no hope. They end up on a senseless tread- mill of ever-seeking and never-finding that illu- sive something called freedom and its attendant joys of real peace and happiness. My senior friends, are you listening? Have you not heard? By God’s grace you have been taught repeatedly at Lynden Christian in many ways by many people in many different situations. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other (needful) things shall be added unto you.” And of those “things’’ freedom leads the list because, ‘‘If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” If you have not this freedom, then seek it to- day from God. He alone can give it! Happy journeying on Freedom’s Road for each of you. Ben H. Boxum, Supt. fede = STANDING: B. Boxum, Supt., C. Van Andel, J. Geleynse, P. Van Zanten, L. Visser, B. Bode, J. Heutink, Vice-Sec., D. De School Board Freedom, what a thought! What a theme! Yet, what is freedom? It is a word we hear and read much about. Ther e are extremists who claim that freedom is a license to do as you please. Yet, such freedom infringes upon the values of someone else. Is that freedom? A time of graduation from High School is sometimes looked upon as becoming free. Yet, soon you find yourself caught up in another dis- cipline of learning or work. We hear much about shorter working-hours and more free time. However, it has been said: “Any fool can adjust to hard work and long hours, it takes great integrity to adjust to lei- sure.” We live in a free country, under a free govern- ment. Yet, if you drive on the wrong side of the street, you get a ticket. Are you free? One finds that governments have to limit freedoms to a certain extent, because freedoms conflict. Boer. SEATED: L. Heeringa, Sec., J. De Jong, Vice-pres., C. Zylstra, Pres., E. Terpstra, Treas., H. Kooy, Asst. Treas. Dwight D. Eisenhower said: ‘‘All our freedoms are a single bundle, all must be secure if any is to be preserved.” Above all we believe in Christian freedom. Paul writes in Gal. 5:1: ‘Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has mad you free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” And later in verse 13: “ ... ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion of the flesh, but by love serve one another.” Freedom of religion, press and person is really important to everybody and is longed for by many. As the board of Lynden Christian we hope that you will deeply appreciate these freedoms, and above all, that you “will be free in Christ and by love serve one another.” For the Board Clarence Zylstra 3S) Arvin Blankers Case Boot B.A. Western Washington State College. After a night of skating the masquerading mob picked up their blistered feet and headed for Shakey’s. The night ended with a few sore seats and many happy memories. 84 Trip Day At 6:00 sharp two chartered buses, loaded with sleepy seniors roared away from Lynden Christian. Everyone was wide-awake, however, after touring George Dam. A boat ride across Diablo Lake and inspection of Ross Dam cleared the way for a long-awaited meal. Then a class of contented seniors headed for the Colloseum at Seattle Civic Center to complete a full day with the Ice Follies. As all temporal things must so did the seniors’ high school career come to a close. The class chose Gerald Baron to be its speaker and Andy Visser to lead in the class song. It was a night of graduation as they bade good-byes to their teachers, their friends, and their school-Lynden Chris- tian High. It was a night of commencement as they looked forward to the future, know- ing they would not be lonely for they were all one in the Spirit. STANDING: Ken Van Ry, A.S.B. The seniors have experienced both tragic and heart-warming events, and they have partici- pated in social, athletic, and academic activi- ties. It was through these experiences that the individuals not only became acquainted with each other, but also learned to love and re- spect one another. This harmony wasn’t per- fect; it couldn’t be, for no one is entirely free from greed, enmity or discord. Yet, despite CLASS MOTTO: “We are One in the Spirit” CLASS SONG: “We are One in the Spirit” CLASS COLORS: Crimson and White CLASS FLOWERS: Red and White Roses 88 Gary Kaemingk, Vice-president; Joan Scholten, Treasurer. these, it was apparent that a spirit of unity con- tinued to grow, which was expressed in the class motto, ‘‘We are One in the Spirit”. The class had found a motto which not only ex- pressed a mutual respect for one another, but also a Common purpose, a common goal, a common destiny. This destiny will be the ulti- mate conclusion, the final outcome. We will enjoy freedom, perfect freedom from hostili- ties, hatred and discord. Then, we truly will be ... “one in the Spirit’. Both were killed in automobile accidents. Though we cannot forget the memories which these pictures bring, we must not forget something of far greater importance.
