The amount of time we devote to any given purpose depends on the importance of that purpose in our lives. These differing amounts of time are symbolized on our cover and division pages by various size picture and copy blocks. For a Christian there is no purpose apart from God's will for man. The goal of the Excelsior staff has been to give you a book of memories representative of your school year-memories of how you used your time, memories of how you were instructed, coun- seled, and guided that, regardless of the activity, time is God's gift and man's respon- sibility to use for His glory: memories that in the years to come will give you an even greater appreciation for your time of Chris- tian education-your time of learning that for everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. In ,ik I Wise planning, prayerful considera- tion, and much dedication from parents, board members, adminis- tration, and teachers is needed to insure the time spent in school is for a God-glorifying purpose. Superintendent Mr. Ben Boxum l O Time--God's Gift, Man's Responsibility In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth, Gen. 1:1. There is the record of when time began. God gave it, in the beginning along with all His creation and He declared it to be good. God is not subject to this gift. God is eter- nal--from age to age the same. A thousand years to God is as one day and one day as a thousand years. By saying this, the Bible teaches that God is eternal, infinite, not sub- ject to time. You and l are creatures of time. We put clocks on our walls and strap watches to our wrists, print calendars and schedules, all to tell us what time it is. After making time, and placing man in it, God tells us to use it. The time l have given you, God instructs us, use to subdue the earth. Indeed, time is God's gift and it is our responsibility. Eccl. 3:1 teaches us that. . . to every thing there is a season and a time to every pur- pose under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die . . . How much time do you have? Only God the giver of it knows this. Maybe three- score years and ten or even fourscore years. But our time will end. We can't add one minute to our time, we can't speed it up, or slow it down, or recapture even a second of it once it is past. Every tick of the clock records another second of time gone for- ever. But someday time will end for each of us. There is a time to be born lin timel and a time to die and with death our time is up. Just as your high school days are over, so everything you do has a time limit placed upon it. What you do with God's gift of time will determine how you will spend eter- nity. One thing you must do, my senior friend, while there is still time is to make sure that the Christ in whose name this school is founded, is your personal Savior. The time for salvation is today--ll Cor. 6:2, Behold, now is the accepted time: behold now is the day of salvation. When time ends, eternity begins. Look well to your God-given responsibility today. We are again re- minded of this text, which you have adopted for this year's annual. There is a time to start school and a time to graduate. You have now finished a season of schooling, a purpose of life accomplished. Yet, this is only one of the purposes. Most of you have already made plans and decisions for the future. Many of you are thinking quite a bit about those plans. That reminds me of the words of Daniel Webster: The most important thought I ever had was that of my individual responsibility to God. This is a thought which also should be the most im- portant in your lives. And as you work on your future plans, consider them not only intelligently, but above all prayerfully. Yet you will find that there are things which you desire deeply, but do not come about. You try to fathom God's Providence and wonder why. He knows however what is best, and this is so well said in an old Irish proverb: lf God shuts one door, He opens another. Look for that open door. For the Board, Clarence Zylstra li IVIRS. Our 64 voice acappela choir certainly had a song during the 67-68 school year and it was heard. Their first performance was at the Reformation Day Service. They nextjoined the local church choirs in their annual Thanksgiving Concert. Nearly a month later the Music and Speech departmentsjoined in a Christmas Concert. The next few months rehearsal time was spent in preparation to compete in the annual Pacific Northwest Musicale. The effort put forth by each mem- ber was rewarded when the choir received a number one rating. Later in the spring it had the opportunity of exchanging concerts with West Vancouver Secondary School and also had the privilege of singing in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The choir wound up with their Spring Concert. lt is the choir's prayer that the testimony given in song may have been a blessing to all who heard and that above all it may have glorified our God. The season began with a concert in the fall and the annual Christmas Concert in December. As the year progressed, the members of the band realized that band isn't such an easy course after all. lt takes a lot of prac- tice, and like most subjects a lot of work. But the satisfaction came when a one rating was received at the annual Spring Musicale. Under the capable leadership of their director, Mr. Anderson, the band has been quite a success this past year. From the entire band, a smaller group was chosen as a Pep Band to perform at Pep rallies, and at home games in football and basketball. The band has also played in Chapel, and for the Spring program. A trip to Frazer Valley High School, and a Spring Con- cert were scheduled. 25 Back Row: S. Stremler, J. Mulder, R. Som, L. Te Velde, S. Vander Pol, K. Stadt, L. De Boer, B. Eshuis. Second Row: E. Excelsior Staff A lot of time and work goes into the making of a good annual, and this is something that the annual staff began to realize more and more as time went on. After attending a workshop at the University of Washington, they began the work of collecting a year into a book. The theme was selected, and slowly but surely it began to be carried out in pic- tures, stories, and illustrations. The days of work, the nights of fun, the routine of classes, and the memorable moments all were taken in and put into this annual to treasure and remember in years to come. The write ups, the special assignments, the running and hurrying to meet the deadlines, the work for just the right pictures, all of these are what go into this annual, and the end product is something that we would like to feel proud of. We hope that we have used our time wisely, and in bringing this annual to you, we hope that you also will think that we have used God's gift wisely. Not shown individually: Photographers: J. One period was set aside every Tuesday and Friday of the school year for this purpose. Chapel was made especially enriching by the variety of messages heard, both from the faculty and from outside speakers. Students, too, shared their talents by leading the song services, providing special numbers, playing organ and piano, and ex- pressing some of their thoughts through speaking. Through the chapel services every member of the student body was instructed to use his time for God's glory. eg me The Cost Directed By Miss Audrey Boker Lena Rivers........... This was certainly accomplished at the Mixer this year. After everyone had been completely mixed, and the spirit of the night had been set by the usual beginning games, the main event, Freshmen Initiation, took place. Back to back, freshmen tried to regain a stand- ing position without the help of their hands. Others were initiated by passing oranges from neck to neck. This feat proved to be quite difficult, and in some cases, rather embarrassing. New students enjoyed lapping up bowls of salted milk. Altogether, the Mixer seemed to be a success, and everyone enjoyed it. -- -,-..,..e t...,,ff- '! The girls modeled their cool, spring outfits to background music played by Gladys Meenk and to the narra- tion of Marj Roosma and Janet Kaemingk, at the annual Mother's Tea. A Toast to the Nlothers and Daughters, a vocal and accor- dian solo, and a vocal duet highlight'ed the program. The refreshments for the tea were prepared by the freshman home economics class. Annual Mother's Teo Assemblies An important part in the school activities at Lynden Christian High School are assem- blies. Some assemblies are strictly for fun, while others are for serious thought. One of the usual assemblies held each year is the l I 5 5 . l l 39 one at Christmas time. At this assembly, the students saw a film on the life of Christ. Earlier in the year a basketball assembly was held, with each class giving a skit, and the best skit winning an award. These skits helped to promote more enthusiasm at Pep Rallies. The Speech Class at L.C.H.S. also put on a melodrama in which the students of the class took part. More recently was the Election Day Assembly. This assembly, although it brought much laughter, was an important one for everyone. At this assem- bly, the new A.S.B. officers were chosen. Lyncs Fanfare was the theme of this year's All Sports Banquet which is given in honor of the ath- letes at LCHS. Balloons, penants, pompoms, and streamers all fit in perfectly to carry out this festive theme. Adding to the fanfare were the girls in color- ful evening dresses and the boys in dark suits. After a delicious meal, that time of year to which every athlete, especially seniors, looks with anticipation, finally came. This year the Inspirational Award in football was given to Curt Meenderinck and the Coaches Award to Vern Haveman and Bob Vander Haak. ln basketball the Player of the Year Award went to Darryl Roosendaal and the Darigold Sports- manship Award to Hank Roorda. Athletes Honored At The Lyncs anal 40 Fanfare Juniors Bid Hosta Lo Vista To Seniors An evening in Old Mexico was the theme chosen by the Juniors for the Junior-Senior Banquet. ln the soft glow of candlelight, the room, decorated with paper flowers and streamers, took on a magical, enchanted look. All the work of the weeks before com- bined to give a banquet that the Juniors could be truly proud of. With Will and Kar- en chosen as the honored couple. Gerald Baron as master of ceremonies and several special numbers by the girls trio, and a trum- pet duet, the evening will be one long rem- embered. As a last good-by, the Juniors chose a sub theme, Haste Ia Vista , and meant it, Farewell, Friends. WZ? I 1 ,- I f F N f' gf 1 A V. The LYNCS came close several times but couldn't quite pull a league victory. What was probably the climax took place in Lynden, where the excited LYNCS came within two points of upsetting the town rivals. They didn't claim numerous victories but the team did display whole-hearted teamwork and genuine sportmanship and really, isn't that just as important? The frequently forgotten Junior Varsity foot- ball squad showed that they deserved more attention. Coached by Mr. lVleIlema, they attained a 3 - win, 1 - loss record. The main thrust of the Jayvee play is to gain game experience for next year's varsity hopefuls and this season they have the potential of replacing the graduating lettermen. 47 Lyncs Retain Enthusiam Despite 48 H tvs'-v'-A 'M BPA- kiss Q'-'M Opponents Chilliwack -M----- ----- Notre Dame Nooksack ------+------- Lynden ---wA---------f Mt. This year the LYNCS held fourth place throughout most of the season. Near the season's end, the possibility that we might not keep that position arose, but the team showed their determination and ended with a tie for third place. What added to the excitement were the numerous overtimes the team played throughout the season. It won't be easy to forget the night Coach Korthuis and the team defeated the Lions for the first time in league play. Though they lost the two games in the district tournament, a high degree of sportsmanship and school spirit continued to grow to the season's end. SENICRS For the seniors the year is a time for ending and a time for a new be- ginning when they must re-evaluate time-God's gift, man's responsibil- ity-as it relates to their future years. At 7:45 a.m., May 1, 85 seniors loaded two buses to set out on their annual Trip Day. They traveled to Newhalem, where they toured Gorge Dam and the surrounding rock gardens. After a delicious dinner at the Gorge Inn they were taken by boat to Ross Dam, which they also toured. Returning to the buses, the seniors traveled to Seattle Civic Center to-have their supper at the Food Circus. That evening they enjoyed the opening performance of the Ice Follies in the Seattle Colloseum. It was a wonderful way to climax their senior year. his Masquerade Party Ouch! Another Senior gingerly picks him- self up from the floor only to fall again. The scene of these accidents was the Birch Bay Roller Rink. Here the seniors, masque- raded as clowns, sailors, jailbirds, and many more, gathered for the long awaited Senior Masquerade Party. After the skating party they all traveled to Shakey's in Bellingham for more fun and refreshments. For all Sen- iors it was a night to remember. 83 Baccalaureate Service Baccalaureate services were again held in Bethel church. Rev. Bernard Byma chal- lenged and inspired the senior as he spoke on their theme- He's Everything to Me. 84 Special music was a duet by Alice De Jong and Janice Doesburg. Through this service the Seniors were reminded to keep Christ in the center of their future activities, so that He would remain everything to them. s s X i Z 5 l l 3 1 l 1 , g z 1 2 . Janet Kaemingk, the class speaker, expressed adequately the feelings of the senior class as they looked back on these memories and also as they looked forward to the challenging future. Gerry Roseboom led the class as in unison they expressed their faith and hope in their class song- He's Every- thing to lVle. As the seniorsxeceived their diplomas from lVIr.
