EXCELSIOR--still higher--ever upward-- this is the definition according to Webster. Noble words, these. To what are you applying this word, Excelsior. Obviously not to such a mundane thing as climbing a stairs. Educationally, we frequently hear such prosaic statements as ‘‘we climb the ladder rung by rung’’ or ‘‘we are climbing.’’ The thought is progress or advancement. This is true in the physical sense up to a point. The baby at first is helpless. Soon he may crawl. Then the first halting steps. Finally, the peak of physical con- dition is reached and he can run at great speed and jump over a high wall. Then begins a slowing down as age advances. The person becomes less and less able to perform physical activity until at last he moves very slowly and the word ‘ Excelsior’’ in this case is mockery. Qualified Administrator And ad Only in the spiritual sense can the goal of Excelsior (ever upward or still higher) really be attained completely. The most decrepit Christian of any age can still go higher spiritually. The Bible’s remedy for ‘‘ever upward’’ does not rest in man but in God. James 4:10 says, ‘‘Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up’’. | Peter 5:6 says the same thing. Matthew 23:12 records, ‘‘Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be brought low. He that shall humble himself shall be ex- alted’’. Isn’t that hard to believe in today’s world with it’s emphasis upon the sovereignity of man rather than God? A song writer caught the vision when these words were penned--|’m pressing on the upward way, new heights |’m gain- ing every day. Still praying as | onward bound, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground. | want to live above the world, tho’ Satan’s darts at me are hurled; for faith has caught the joyful sound, the song of saints on higher ground. Lord, lift me and let me stand, by faith on heavens table land, a higher plane than | have found, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.’’ Excel sior!
