The theme of our annual is a development of the name of our yearbook-- ‘Excelsior’’. The name ‘‘Excel- sior’’, meaning higher, was chosen by the first annual staff in 1949. We feel that the poem ‘‘Excelsior’’ written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow portrays goals applicable for Christians of all ages. Longfellow himself said that in ‘Excelsior’ his aim was ‘‘to display, in a series of pictures, the life of aman.... resisting all temptations, laying aside all fears, heedless of all warnings, and pressing on to accomplish his purpose. Excelsior by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The shades of night were falling fast, As through an Alpine village passed A youth, who bore, ’mid snow and ice, A banner with the strange device, EXCELSIOR! His brow was sad; his eye beneath, Flashed like a falchion from its sheath, And like a silver clarion rung The accents of that unknown tongue, EXCELSIOR! In happy homes he saw the light Of household fires gleam warm and bright; Above, the spectral glaciers shone, And from his lips escaped a groan, EXCELSIOR! “Try not the Pass!”’ the old man said; ‘Dark lowers the tempest overhead, The roaring torrent is deep and wide!”’ And loud that clarion voice replied, EXCELSIOR! “O stay,’’ the maiden said, ‘‘and rest Thy weary head upon this breast!”’ A tear stood in his bright blue eye, But still he answered, with a sigh,’ EXCE LSIOR! ‘Beware the pine tree’s withered branch! Beware the awful avalanche!’’ This was the peasant’s last Good-night; A voice replied, far up the height, EXCELSIOR! At break of day, as heavenward The pious monks of Saint Bernard Uttered the oft-repeated prayer, A voice cried through the startled air, EXCELSIOR! A traveler, by the faithful hound, Half-buried in the snow was found, Still grasping in his hand of ice That banner with the strange device, EXCELSIOR! There in the twilight cold and gray, Lifeless, but beautiful, he lay, And from the sky, serene and far, A voice fell, like a falling star, EXCELSIOR! Our days at LCHS have been days of preparation for pressing on to that higher calling of our Lord Jesus Christ. The wish of the annual staff of 1967 is that the memories represented in this book and the goals of the students may always be in keeping with God’s Word as found in Philppians 3:13 14 ‘‘Brethren, | count not myself to have laid hold: but one thing | do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretch- ing forward to the things which are before, | press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.’’ pi yy EXCELSIOR ff a i Until the wondrous sight Makes earthly treasures seem but dross, And earthly sorrows light! r. Korthuis Dedication The annual staff finds it indeed fitting te dedi- cate this 1967 Excelsior to you--Mr. Robert Korthuis. The student body sincerely appreciates your diligent work as teacher, coach, and advisor. Many students will long remember your enthus- iastic teaching and Christian conviction in the classroom while unfolding the events of history. Your leadership in athletics and emphasis on good sportsmanship has inspired excellent cross- country teams and an exceptionally good year in varsity track. We'll be looking forward to next year as you add to your responsibilities the coach- ing of varsity basketball. We hope you have enjoyed your years at Lynden Christian High and will continue to receive God’s blessings in the future. When | have learned my Father’s will, I'll joyful teach His ways; My thankful lips, inspired with zeal, Shall loud pronounce His praise. ADMINISTRATION ee — . The quality of mercy is not strained; it droppeth, as the gentle rain from heaven. Upon the place beneath; it is twice bless’d-it blesseth him that gives, and him that takes. EXCELSIOR--still higher--ever upward-- this is the definition according to Webster. Noble words, these. To what are you applying this word, Excelsior. Obviously not to such a mundane thing as climbing a stairs. Educationally, we frequently hear such prosaic statements as ‘‘we climb the ladder rung by rung’’ or ‘‘we are climbing.’’ The thought is progress or advancement. This is true in the physical sense up to a point. The baby at first is helpless. Soon he may crawl. Then the first halting steps. Finally, the peak of physical con- dition is reached and he can run at great speed and jump over a high wall. Then begins a slowing down as age advances. The person becomes less and less able to perform physical activity until at last he moves very slowly and the word ‘ Excelsior’’ in this case is mockery. Qualified Administrator And ad Only in the spiritual sense can the goal of Excelsior (ever upward or still higher) really be attained completely. The most decrepit Christian of any age can still go higher spiritually. The Bible’s remedy for ‘‘ever upward’’ does not rest in man but in God. James 4:10 says, ‘‘Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift you up’’. | Peter 5:6 says the same thing. Matthew 23:12 records, ‘‘Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be brought low. He that shall humble himself shall be ex- alted’’. Isn’t that hard to believe in today’s world with it’s emphasis upon the sovereignity of man rather than God? A song writer caught the vision when these words were penned--|’m pressing on the upward way, new heights |’m gain- ing every day. Still praying as | onward bound, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground. | want to live above the world, tho’ Satan’s darts at me are hurled; for faith has caught the joyful sound, the song of saints on higher ground. Lord, lift me and let me stand, by faith on heavens table land, a higher plane than | have found, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.’’ Excel sior! Standing: D. De Jong, Vicar; E. Roosma; H. Scholten; H. Kooy, Asst. Treas.; D. Groothuis; D. De Boer; J. Geleynse; B. Boxum, Superintendent; H. Haak, Vice-pres.; L. Heeringa, clerk; C. Zylstra, Pres.; E. Van Loo, Treas.; C. Van Andel. Able Men Compose Ruling Body | consider it a privilege as chairman of the board and in name of the board to write a few lines in your annual. As your motto this year you have adopted ‘“‘Excelsior’’ which according to Longfellow in his poem ‘‘Excelsior’’ is an expression of aspiration toward greater heights. What are your aspirations for the future? You have already laid much of the foun- dation for the future. Raised in a Christian home, trained at a Christian Schoo l, your biggest aspiration in life should be to be a Christian. And as a Christian you should set a goal toward which you want to work. Twelve years of education are behind you. Consider seriously to further your education. Since we are living in an age of specialization, you should specialize yourself, so that as a Christian you can use your talents to the best of your ability and above all to the glory of God. You have now reached a point in your life where a decision has to be made. Make this decision prayerfully and intelligently. As board of the Lynden Christian School we congratulate you with your achieve- ment and extend to you our best wishes for the future. For the Board Clarence Zylstra, President Teaching, typing, and Bible | and II, keep Mr. Vander Haak very busy. In the spare time he has, he likes to read and work around his yard. Mr. Vander Haak and his sons find that painting takes up a lot of their summer vacation. This year Mr. Vander Haak served as a Senior advisor. He earned his B.A. from Calvin college and his M.A. from University of lowa. Crossword puzzle books fill Miss Haverhals’ home. Any spare moments she may have are spent in this delightful pastime. A graduate of Calvin College, she teaches bookkeeping and Latin. Along with teaching, Miss Haverhals’ finds time to ably advise the Pep Club and Drill Team. With his main interests in biology, Mr. Stegink also finds time to read, fish, and work out of doors. For some years he has served as an ad- visor for the Science Club, who this year planted tulips in the school mall. Mr. Stegink was grad- ws uated from Calvin College with a B.A. degree. He also attended Purdue University where he receiv- ed his M.S. degree. The only man in the family, Mr. Timmer certainly is not henpecked! A sports enthusiast, he takes time off from his work for golfing. Mr. Timmer teaches geometry and chemistry and coaches our basketball team. He is probably the only man in school who has to listen to miscellaneous ex- cuses for tardiness and absence every school day. Mr. Timmer was graduated from Calvin College. One interesting thing about Mr. Mellema is that he is single. . . yet. As a sports enthusiast, he especially enjoys spending his spare time on the golf course. He is a native of the Lynden area, having graduated from Lynden Christian in 1961. He was coach of the basketball team, and base- ballteam. Mr. Mellema earned his B.A. from WWSC. Having earned his B.A. from WWSC, Mr. Blankers teaches Algebra |, Il, Ill, and Physics. When not busy with teaching, he enjoys swimming and golfing. One of his hobbies is woodworking. He also coaches the track team who did very well this year. He is the busy father of two small children. A newcomer to LCHS, Miss Baker earned a B.A. from Calvin College in Grand Rapids. In her lei- sure time she enjoys sewing and she loves to ‘'ust go fun places and meet interesting people’’. She also enjoys sports and claims swimming and basketball to be special favorites. This year Miss Baker directed the Senior play and helped in the costuming of the Musical. For Mr. Anderson music is not just a profession. In his spare time he listens to it, not only on recordings, but also at many concerts. He enjoys reading it and even composesa little of his own. Orginal ly from Blaine, Mr. Anderson earned a B.A. degree from Bethel College in Minnesota. This year Mr. Anderson tried something new at LCHS. A Musical, H.M.S. Pinafore, was given and was a complete success. Mr. MacKay was a new addition tp our teaching staff. He teaches shop and Agriculture. He is a graduate of WWSC. Mr. MacKay recently returned from the Navy and is still very active in the Naval Reserves. Counselling is one of Mr. Bulthuis busiest jobs. This service is much appreciated by all high school students. He also teaches sociology and psychology. While serving in Nigeria, Mr. Bulthuis claims he enjoyed hiking through the African bush. At home he raises tropical fish for a hobby. Mr. Bulthuis earned a B.A. from Calvin and his M.A. from WWSC. An avid fisherman, Mr. De Hoog is an outdoor enthusiast. Along with fishing he enjoys golfing in his spare time. He teaches Health and St. His- tory. He was our coach for varsity football, and Freshman basketball and baseball. Mr. De Hoog spent some of his younger years here in Whatcom County. He graduated from Mt. Baker High Schoo! and earned his B.A. degree from WWSC. With her own personal interests in cooking and sewing, Mrs. Richendrfer can instruct the Home Economics -students well. The mother of 5 child- ren, she finds herself very busy; but in her spare time she likes to cook new and interesting dishes. She earned a B.S. from the University of Washing- ton and her B.A. from WWSC. Here’s a real outdoor man! An excellent gardener, Mr. Boot once claimed to have dug up a skull. Mr. Boot teaches Algebra and Reformed Doctrine. He received a B.A. degree from Dordt and this is his first year at LCHS. This year Mr. Boot and his wife accompanied the Choir and Band to Port- land, Oregon. Mr. Boot is a native Canadian but claims to enjoy the ‘‘good old USA’’. The Agriculture class this year was taught by two men, each taking three six week periods. Both Mr. Polinder and Mr. Starkenburg graduated from WWSC. Mr. Polinder recently finished his military service with the Army and is now busy building up his own farm. Mr. Starkenburg owns and manages a nearby dairy farm also. We’re cer- tainly appreciative of their willingness to leave their work and instruct this class. Mr. Starkenburg is not shown. Holding true to what she teaches, our art teacher enjoys painting and drawing. Watching birds is one of her favorite outdoor sports; inside she likes to work with ceramics and she also cooks alot. Mrs. Meenk also is an excellent photograph- er and develops her own film. She earned her B.A. and M.A. from Western Washington State College. Many graduates from LCHS received their instruc- tion in US and World History from Mr. Korthuis. In addition, Mr. Korthuis coaches the cross country, track team, and J.V. Basketball teams. Among his interests are hunting, fishing and hiking. He also enjoys outdoor sports of al kinds. Mr. Korthuis graduated from LCHS and received his B.A. from Calvin College. 14 Introducing English to the Freshmen and counsel- ing take up much of this man’s time. Mr. Vander Pol is a fisherman at heart and he likes to just ‘relax and read’’. This year Mr. Vander Pol help- ed in the production of the H.M.S. Pinafore. He is the sponsor for the debate team and annual staff. Mr. Vander Pol is interested in music as he leads a church choir. Recently he earned his M.A. from WWSC. Advising the Hi-Lite staff takes up much of Mr. Ympa’s time. Mr. Ympa’s primary responsibility is to guide the Seniors through English Litera- ture. Among his hobbies are reading, golfing, and gardening. Mr. Ypma graduated from Dordt College in lowa where he received his B.A. degree. An able office hand, Mrs. Van Loo will always answer questions for anyone who may have some. In what spare time she has Mrs. Van Loo enjoys sewing. This is her first year of working at LCHS. Arriving early each morning and leaving late in the afternoon is this very capable secretary. Mrs. Werkema is kept busy helping our Superin- tendant. Most of her summer vacation is spent at school keeping school records up to date. She enjoys playing the organ and spends a great deal of time in books. To organize books and magazines, to keep the library in tip top shape--this is the job of Miss Zylstra, our librarian. She earned a B.A. from WWSC in Bellingham and she claims to like to travel and read. Miss Zylstra also likes to work in her yard. Her services at LCHS are much appreciated by all. Scrubbing, sweeping, waxing, and mopping are only some of the many jobs of our janitor, Mr. Bouma. Mr. Bouma enjoys his work in the mall area best of all. His janitor work keeps him busy six days a week. In his spare time Mr. Bouma enjoys fishing but he says he doesn’t have enough time. We'll certainly miss his steady tread through the halls next year. It paints hundreds of posters to promote our games; it raises money through bake sales and book sales in order to finance the All-Sports Banquet; and it attends games as faithfully as the participants traveling to many places to support our team. This throbbing pulse of navy and white which we call Pep Club certainly lives up to its name. Each Monday evening during basketball season this eager group met to practice. A whistle and off they go. Up and down the floor--performing difficult steps and making different figures. Under the expert guidance of Sally Scheffer, the Drill Team often marched with the band. They usually performed at Friday night home basketball games. Their intricate patterns were thouroughly enjoyed by all. Drill Leader: S. Scheffer Assistant: P. You’re missing those Director: Mr. Anderson accidentals! Come on, let’s get this right now, people!’’ And so the band, under the direction of their new leader, Mr. Anderson, played on. As usual several concerts high- lighted this year’s hard practice. The first November concert was sacred, and drew a large crowd. For the Christmas Concert the entire music department put on a program--with the aid of the speech class. ‘This year again the band profit- ted greatly by attending the Spring Musicale which was held at Portland. Later in the spring several of the band members participated in the production of the H.M.S. Pinafore. To top the year off the band and choir gave a beautiful performance at the Spring Concert. (AALZd fp C4 “Alright, warm up!’’ was heard by members of the choir each day as third hour began in the music room. Not only did they fill the room and halls with music but they also sang for the enjoyment of many different audiences in a number of various places. Their first performance was at the Reformation Day Rally. Then at Thanksgiving they participated in. the Choir Festival. Once again the choir raised their voices in testimony to God that His truth was still marching on. A month later with the combined efforts of the music and speech department an enjoyable concert was presented at Christmas. Another year is drawing to a close and the work of the student council is finished until the next term. We of the students council wish to thank the students, faculty, and Mr. Boxum, our advisor, for the cooperation they have displayed. Our student body is truly the best | have seen, and the attitude on the whole is one to be proud of. | was espec- ially pleased with the sportsmanship you displayed after our first difficulties; it was a show of good Christian conduct. Thank you student body. The activities we sponsored were the usual. We planned the mixer, sold ASB cards, organized the Talent Assembly, held elections for the new ASB officers and the new cheerleaders, and we set up the committees for chapel. ASB cards were sold during enrollment this year, this was the first time we did it this way and we found that it worked very well. As we end the year, we the Seniors of the Student Council would like to remind the future leaders of the school and the Student Body to remember always that you are Chris- tians and to conduct yourselves as Christ expects you to. Always keep your school a thing of which you can be proud. Even though we had failures we hope you will be able to profit from them. We wish you the best for next year. A.S.B. Stu- dents and teachers met in the assembly room to be directed from God’s Word. Especially mean- ingful were individual student speakers. Special numbers were given by groups or individuals who shared their talents. A lot of credit for making the preparation for chapel goes to Mr. Vander Haak, who was in charge of getting guest chapel speakers once a week. Teachers also took part by talking to us each Tuesday. The students did an excel- lent job of welcoming the freshmen, new students, and new teachers, and making them feel at home in LCHS. Freshmen initiation highlighted the first party of the year. Some ate tasty treats such as bouillon cubes. Others carried members of the opposite sex across the floor. This burden almost proved too much for some frosh boys. The new teachers, after being blindfolded, fulfilled their assignment by feeding each other chocolate pudding. Several finished their debut looking like Little Black Sambo. Posters, and booster buttons were seen all around LCHS during the try- ing week of elections. At the annual election assembly, skits were given and campaign managers gave rousing speeches. Means such as force, threats, candy, and promises were used by the candidates to gain votes. Ballots were cast, counted and amid shouts of joy, sighs of relief, stifled moans, and unshed tears, the victors were announced. As tradition at LCHS, Steve handed his gavel over to Gary, Jerry to Jim, Marlene gave her minutes book to Linda, and Sue handed over the resp- onsibility of caring for our money to Ny la. With the assembly room jammed full of boisterous students and anxious sponsors, the annual talent assembly started with a bang. Each class had fifteen minutes in which to present dramatical and musical talent. The audience witnessed a fashion show, interviews with famous people, and Bumtown, U.S.A. The trophy was captured by the Juniors who presented a hillbilly wedding, shotguns and all. The Seniors took second place with a Batman and Robin fairy tale. BEA eins ei Amid the gay colors of Spring the Senior Home Economics students modeled out- fits and ensembles which they had made in Home Ec class. Mothers, Aunts, and friends, turned out to watch and had an enjoyable time. Lunch was prepared by the students. The Sr. Girls Trio and Alice De Jong performed special music. Training and teamwork, spectators and action contribute to the spirit of loyalty in our school. Determination, hard work, and love for the game gave the Lyncs’ gridders their most successful season. After two years of ‘biting the mud’’ our boys pulled themselves up and faced their foe. They began turnouts in the heat of August, and, as their friends spent time on the beach getting tan, they drilled on offense and defense. As school started and the season progressed, the dry, torn sod turned to mud; but the practice continued. The more teams they played, the harder they practised; and the harder they practised, the higher the dividends they received. Winning five out of eight games shows much improvement and promise for the years to come. Co-Captain Co-Captain Full Back Center G. Van Loo S. Boxum 9 tata 2277, End End D. Bovenkamp D. After a ride up into the moun- tains we enjoyed tours of Ross and Diablo Dam and returned finding a ‘‘huge’’ noon meal awaiting us at the base of the Diablo Dam. The day was climaxed by attending the Ice Follies at the Seattle Civic Center. Clowns were many and the horses were few at the annual Senior masquerade party. The Burlington Roller Rink held us for skating and soon the big mass picked itself up and relocated for pizzas at Shakeys. There were nigger babies, Little Bo Peep, Uncle Sam, hippies, and grannies. This traditional last party of the Seniors is something that will be long remembered. Traditional church services were held in Bethel this year. Rev. Donald Negen spoke on the theme the Seniors had chosen--We’ll Never Walk Alone. Special music was provided by Alice De Jong. At this service, each Senior was reminded of the challenges and decisions he would now face, but with a guide like Christ we will never face these times alone! ‘Every good thing must come to end--so the Sen- iors realized at Graduation. Elaine Boxum, the _class speaker, captured the emotions, thoughts, ideals, and goals of the graduating students. Seniors Recall Lasting Friendships ‘“As we pause to take another look back at all the friends and memories we’re leaving behind, traces of smiles, sad- ness, tears, and yes, even fright, cross our faces. As these thoughts go through our mind, it seems that all the hands that have held us steady so far, those of parents, teachers, friends, and ministers, are no longer there to hold us upright and we have to take the next shaky steps by ourselves. Suddenly we feel alone, horribly alone. But wait, fellow graduates, we’re not alone nor will we ever be alone. There’s someone standing on the path just wait- ing for us to put our hand in His.
