The 1964 Excelsior Staff has striven to illustrate the opened and still unopened doors as L.C.H.S. Since all of us will enter new doors, we hope that this Excel- sior will serve as a reminder of the days spent inside the doors of Lynden Christian High School. Sam Faber 3 Dear Mr. Vander Pol, As a faithful and understanding teacher, you have opened to us many doors of knowledge that have been very important during our high school days. As our Freshman Class sponsor you aided us in opening the doors to the new high school life before us. As the Excelsior Staff advisor you have helped us picture a true story of activities at L.C.H.S. As counsellor you have guided us to open the right doors to our futures. Because of all this help and guidance you have given.us. . .. .WE, THE EXCELSIOR STAFF, DEDICATE THIS 1964 EXCELSIOR TO YOU, MR. VANDER POL | 3 OK THEY OPEN THE DOORS | TO UNDERSTANDING Dear Graduates of 1964, In an old English textbook were two poems both entitled ‘‘Opportunity.’’ Both personified opportun- ity as something that came knocking at every door. Here the similarity ended, however. One poem pic- tured opportunity as knocking loudly only once, and if not invited to enter, moving on never to retum. . The other poem pictured opportunity as knocking again and again at the same door. Which of the two gave the true picture? Since 1960 the door of opportunity has been wide open to each of you--the opportunity to receive a sound Christian High School Education. Opportunity knocked repeatedly, and with each succeeding knock there was an increased urgency reminding you that the time was running out--that the knocking would cease. And so it has. You do not hear it now because you have had youropportunity as a high SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Ben Boxum school student. If you welcomed the opportunity, you are thankful now that you did. If you didn’t, well--it would seem foolish to sit around waiting for the knock again. There is one door that you must enter first. You will find it described in John 11 where Jesus says, ‘‘I am the door; by me if any man enter in he shall be saved.’’ This is your greatest opportunity. Don’t fail to grasp it today! Having entered this door into the Kingdom of God, you will find all other things will be added unto you. May God give to each of you the discernment to distinguish the sincere knocking of God given oppor- tunity in your life. Yours in Christ’s Service, Ben H. Boxum, Supt. ii aa aa Back Row: L. Rozeboom, Vice-Pres.; SCHOOL BOARD Graduating Class of 1964, Your work at Lynden Christian High has been completed. Although fond memories may linger, the days and years spent there are history and cannot be retraced. Graduates, you are living in a day and age of opportunities, but also of temptations. You will be called upon to make decisions. You stand at an important cross-road and our hope for you is that these decisions will be wise ones which reflect the education, the convictions, and the blessings you received by attending this God-centered school. We pray that God will radiate from your lives and that you will be used by Him to influence others to live for Him. Congratulations and best wishes. Lynden Christian School Board JOcul. Starken- Many, varied, and pleasant were the tasks of the 1964 L.C.H. Student Council. Possibly this year was not so very different from past years for many, but for us it was, for we felt the res- ponsibility of representing all of the students at Lynden Christian. The usual events-the Mixer, the selling of student body cards, the chapel committees, the election of next year’s officers and cheer leaders, the awards assembly--were all a part of our work. We initiated a drama assembly in which the classes compete for a trophy and we worked closely with the L’’ Club in the Pancake Day OFFICERS: L. Vander Giessen, Sec.; R. De Jong, Pres.; STUDENT COUNCIL to earn money for the new football team. But beyond this we will remember special things. We will remember the opportunity we had to actively ‘ bear ye one another’s burdens”’ when we took a collection for the fire-razed Pella Christian School, and we will remember the chance we had to witness when we hosted the IntereHigh Council and discussed problems pertinent to all high school students. We thank you, Mr. Boxum, for your guidance, and you, faculty members and students, for cooperating with us in our attempt to make this year a good one. Rod De Jong, President B. Bode, Vice-Pres.; C. Choir and Band Host 550 After many hours of careful rehearsing, the A Capella Choir made its first public debut by presenting a half hour program of Christmas music on KVOS-TV, December 19. In March, along with the L.C.H.S. Band, the choir was host to Christian school students from Idaho, Oregon, and Washington attending the Musicale. The climax to the school year was the tour on which the choir presented several concerts in Wash- ington and northern Oregon. 20 Under the direction of Mr. Jerry Friesen, the band has had another busy year of providing music entertainment at basketball games. On November 22, 1963, the first all band concert was rendered at the Everson Christian Reformed Church. A second project was a program at Langley, B.C., March 3, Along with the choir, the _ band acted as host for the 1964 Musicale, March 17-20.
