Robert Timmer FOREWORD In order that we may provide a lasting record of our events and experiences of the past year for the smdents of L.C.H.S. and that we may relate for our parents, the alumni, and associates of our school an account of our past year’s school life, we, the Annual Staff, present the 1963 EXCELSIOR. Our desire is that all who read these pages may develop a greater love and appreciation for our Christian high school. To accomplish this desire we have chosen as our theme, ‘HERE ARE MY HANDS, LORD, USE THEM.”’ STUDENT LIFE ....... page 46 UNDERCLASSMEN ...... SENIORS .......... page 70 ze) = eee ee a eer ODEST ESPECTED FFICIENT ELIABLE OTEWORTHY NEKGETIC INCERE RUTHFUL RUSTWORTHY NTHUSIASTIC EAT ORTHY NDUSTRIOUS TEDFAST ERVING ARDWORKING BLE DEDICATION We, the Annual Staff, are proud and happy to dedicate the 1963 EXCELSIOR to you, MR. ERNEST TER WISSHA in deep gratitude for the eight years of untiring, ceaseless work you have accomplished. This is not done without reason - for the entire student body realizes that you are very deserving of this honor. Your fine Christian character, unflinching sacrifices, friendliness, willingness, and patience have contributed much to the welfare of L.C.H.S. throughout these years. It is indeed our greatest hope that you will continue to serve us for many years to come and that you will also continue to receive God’s richest blessings in your future work. Superintendent Dear Graduates of 1963: Our hands are frequently used to help express a thought or an emotion. You need only to think of the clenched fist and you associate this gesture with anger. Folded hands may portray an attitude of prayer. A pointing finger serves to clearly define who or what is being singled out. In the theme of this book you have dedicated the the use of your hands to the service of the Lord. This is symbolic language, of course. Hands do not act in isolation from the rest of the body or with- out a motive first conceived in the mind. The difference between a Martin Luther’s hands nailing 95 theses to a door, and an Adolph Hitler’s hands directing the murder of millions of helpless people is not in the size of the gloves they wore, but rather in the dedication of Luther to the service of the Lord and Hitler to the service of Satan. The difference between a Pilate’s hands, ‘“‘washed in supposed innocency’’ and the Christ’s innocent hands subjected to cruel nail piercing is not due to different racial background or social status, but to the motive of a Pilate to please the people, and of the Christ to do the will of His Father who had sent Him. Each of you will be called to wider service than what you have experienced thus far. Many of the things you have learned at Christian High you will be using in your future work. Whether you serve as a business man, a doctor, a farmer, a minister, a nurse, a secretary, a housewife, or a statesman is not the most important consideration. From what motive, for what reason you serve is the most important. The Apostle Paul summarized it in I Cor. 10:31: Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory ot God. If each of you will start with this humble begin- ning, ‘Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I1 cling; you will be able to go in real strength and say “Take my hands and let them move, at the impulse of Thy love.’’ God grant the desire to each of you to so dedi- cate his life. Yours as ever in Christ, Ben Boxum SEATED: Ben Boxum, Superintendent; George Rozeboom, Vice President; Joe T. De Jong, President; Chris Van Andel, Harry Pilon, Amie Blankers. STANDING: Len Bode, Frank Bouwman, Albert Meenk, Gerrit Hereinga, Floyd Assink, Secretary; Alfred Brink, Treasurer; Harold Boume. School Board Graduating Class of 1963: No doubt many of you, as you reflect on your High School days will say, ‘thow swiftly the days and ? years have gone by.’’ You will no longer be a student at Lynden Christian, but will be counted among the Alumni. The Board is happy that you were privileged to attend and graduate from a Christian School. It is our hope and prayer that as your ways part and you will no longer work collectively, but individually, that the instruction, the training you’have received at Lynden Christian will in a measure more qualify you for the tasks and decisions you will be required to make as you enter upon a new era in your life. May it, first of all instill in your hearts an earnest desire to serve and witness for your Lord and Master, at all times realizing that this is our ‘ Father’s world.’® May you ever seek and reach out for those things that are of eternal and abiding values. Col. 3:2 ‘ Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”’ Congratulations and God’s richest blessings on your future. Lynden Christian School Board. JocelaDe Jong, President. The 1962-63 Student Council of Lynden Christian High School would like to take this opportunity to thank our advisor, Mr. Ben Boxum, the faculty and the entire student body for helping make this another successful year. Beside the many routine activities of the council, we set up a clean-up system for the grounds, made improves ments on our buildings and made revisions concerning cheerleader elections. ASB elections, the awards assem- bly and cheerleader tryouts concluded our activities. As we look back on the school year, we can see that God has richly blessed us in many ways. Not only did He see fit to bless our student body in all our activities, but also in our Christian environment at LCHS. Truly, the Christian education at Lynden Christian High is a sturdy foundation for our lives. Thank You.
