7K L N lon OF The Lynden Christian High School i ' Lynden, Washington Foreword The annual Staff of Lynden Christian High proudly presents the ulixce-lsior . The theme which vve have chosen is: KEY TO THE PAST We wish to impress upon you that the uExcelsior is this key. We sincerely hope that it vvill open to you the door to our wonderful and memorable experiences which lie behind us. Our 1959 UExcelsior includes a vivid account of the activities of the student body, the efforts put forth by teachers, and the contributions of the parents. To all a hearty Thank You. mln books lie the key of the vvhole past: the audible voice of the past, when the body and material substance of it has altogether vanished like a dream. To this quotation vve would like to add a prayer: Teach me, my God and King In all things Thee to see, And what I do in anything To do it as for Thee. If this is our prayer as vve stand in this interim viewing the unlocked past and searching the future, then truly vve can say, EXCELSIOR - OUR GOAL IS HIGHER Z A 'inf , siiiv 1 rf V0-QNX Q '7....u-,J , k ,K 'Y unify f ' fans-L ease-fi M J' -new E mi ,, , df, . ,ia , g 1 W,......... sf 1 Iiigwii min Dedication Miss Zylstra: To you, Miss Zylstra, we dedicate the 1959 Excelsior , This is not done without reason - for the entire student body realizes that you are well- deserving of this honor. You have reached an important milestone in your lives. As each of you go on your respective ways may you ever be faithful to your Lord and Savior. We read in Proverbs 3:6 mln all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct thy paths. First of all we must acknowledge Him within our hearts as our Creator, our Benefactor, our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Then we shall not find it difficult to recognize Him in all our undertakings. As young people you have serious choices to make in life concerning your vocation, your friends, and your life partners. We must desire to do what is pleasing in God's sight for only that will receive divine blessing. May the words of this passage of Scripture be a challenge to each one of you as you journey through this life and may you be ever loyal to the ideals for which your parents, by God's grace, established this school. Be ever aware of your responsibility to uphold and further strengthen the cause of Christian education as a very important part in the building of God's kingdom. Are you ready to dedicate your life to Him? May God bless you and keep you close to Him always. 6 The School Board, Jim Van Andel, president Superintendent Dear Class of '59 lf you can overlook the claim of possessiveness, you are really l'my first class. We started at L.C.H.S. together in September, '55, At that time, June of '59 seemed like a long way off. Yet the time has passed rapidly. It is a good thing that we blaze markers along the path of time. This fine school annual is a very fitting trail blazer. You anticipate its future worth by calling it the llKey to the Past. Congratulations to you for this worthy publication. Viewing the course of your lives from this point of time, the 1958-59 school year, there is a road marker which is more prominently in view. This sign says, l'Graduation from Christian High, the Key to the Future. We congratulate you in that you have reached the end of an educational program the goal of which has been to Let the Word of God dwell in you richly in all Wisdom. That objective is the Key to all of Time and Eternity. Congratulations and God bless you. CLASS HISTORY As we come to the end of our high school career, let us take a moment to turn back the pages of these four years. We began our Freshman year rather uncertainly, but the Mixer helped everyone get acquaintedg and soon we were in the midst of high school life. Our class advisors this year were Miss Donna Spaan and Mr. Garris Timmer. As Sophomores we were advised by Mr. John Verstrate and Mr. Bernard Engbers. The most exciting experience of this year was our hike up Sumas Mountain. After everyone was reunited we had supper at Berthusen's Park. Our Junior year was a year filled with many memories. Shortly after we returned to school we ordered our class rings, and they arrived just before Christmas. Many hours and weeks of careful planning and preparation also went into our Junior-Senior Banquet. lt had a Roman atmosphere with the Latin theme, Finis Coronet Opus. Miss Marian Vander Ark and Mr. John Fakkema were our class advisors during this year. Our Senior year, without a doubt, has been the most thrilling and the most unforgettable year of our high school days. Our graduation plans began with real enthusiasm as soon as school opened. A new feature added this year was having our Masquerade Party as a skating party. An- other of the most anticipated events of the year was Senior Skip Day, which was held at the end of the year. We, the class of '59, leave these halls with mixed emotions. lNe thank God for guiding us thus far, and we hope and pray for his continued blessing in the future. f, 47 , 3 lf' s. Junior-Senior Banquet On May 2, 1958, the Juniors honored the Seniors with a banquet. The chosen theme was Finis Coronet Opus meaning, t'The End Crowns the Work. The set- ting was in a Roman building outlined with pillars. Look- ing through the pillars on one side picturesque mount- ains could be seen and the opposite side displayed the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Many long hours ol work and fun were spent in preparation for the big event. The result was stacks and stacks of paper and a profit of S907.08. It was the delight of the student body to see these two new teachers, Mr. Boxum and Mr. De Young, initiated at the annual all-school get-acquainted Mixer, Because of the maiority of boys in the student council, they decided to sponsor a Twirp Week, at LCHS, March 2-6, for all the enterprising young girls, who had not been able us of yet, to land that 'lspecial boy of their Choice. 64 A busy scene every other Friday is the Hi Lite Room. The typewriters tic a little faster than usual and there is a hur- ried shuffle of papers to meet the 3:25 deadline. Wh ther Night or Day Seniors in all sorts and sizes of costumes presented them- selves at the Masquerade Party. The Ferndale Roller Rink was the place at which the party was held this year. Rather than flipping their lids the male faculty flipped pancakes one early morning. Together with early birds of the choir they served a Pancake Breakfast. The profit was used to increase funds for the purchase of new robes. It's Great to Be Student The fifty-tour voice A Cappella Choir was an active group this year. Besides giving concerts in the various churches, the choir was kept busy with many money-raising proiects. These three senior boys and their coach were among the proud but weary travelers who returned from the Christmas tournament in Bell- flower, California with the prized championship trophy. 66 Valentine's Day called for a Red and White Party with lunch and games and a display of enthusiasm by the big hearted senior boys at the Pep Rally which followed.
