TA Lis AAU TTY) HY Ca ere a | = SSO ZAM ZZ MZ C LIBRAR' ii Uy I “OMI | GLMCA LEAP y Sreward. The annual staff of the Lynden Christian High School proudly presents the ‘56 Excelsior, Pressing On. Our life may be compared to a journey on board ship. We are ever pressing forward with God as our pilot to that which lies beyond the horizon. On our journey we meet many obstacles. There are storms and high seas; there are disagreeable tides and treacherous shoals. But there are joys, too, and over all is the call of the sea, and the exhilaration of follow- ing it. But best of all, there is the goal at the end of our journey for which we are constantly striving — ''the prize o f the high calling of God through Christ Jesus, our Lord. OUR THEME: VPressi ng ©), Sy et: of Gs ee ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS ATHEEVICS FEATURES SRADEISCHOOR Dyedlianere: We, the students of the Lynden Christian High School, dedicate this 1956 Excelsior to you, our parents. You are the ones who have launched us on this journey of life and anchored our faith and deep con- viction in God's word by giving us a Christian education. We thank our God for placing us in Christian homes and giving us Christian parents, who are interested in our spiritual well-being as well as our physical and mental development. You have sacrificed much to prepare us for our journey through life, and we are truly grateful for your having trained us in the way we should go. God grant that we, as young people, always live up to the training you have given us in our youth; that when we are grown, we shall not depart from it. Ped ler entctration Our school is piloted by the administration. These people are the ones who help us with many of our problems and give us much-needed guidance and in- struction. They guide us in our journey by helping us to set a straight course; they encourage and instruct us by showing how we shall reach our goal. From left: Vice-pre rit H Clarence B ' 0 i sident; Eq i. They want to do things. That is natural and good, for God has created young people that way. So the theme expresses action, pressing on. We also read of that in Scripture. ‘'l press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.'' —Phil. 3:14. It is like someone on the race track who never gives up until he has reached the goal, always pressing on. This is often the picture of life, pressing on and on. Your training at home and church and school has prepared you for this press- ing on toward the goal which is heaven. Those who have heaven as their goal must strive with a holy desire in preparing themselves for this life to come. The calling of a christian is a high calling which comes from above, and if we are to reach this goal we must always be pressing on. It is a continual striving until we have re- ceived the prize in Christ Jesus. Class of 1956, it is your board's sincere desire and prayer that you will be con- tinually pressing on and striving against every sin that doth so easly beset you. EDWARD F. KOK, President aia Guiding ‘Principal . aii Dear Class of '56: It is a real pleasure for me to express congratulations to this fine class. Even after having known you for only a short time, | already feel an attachment of sincere appreciation for your aptitudes and your attitudes. Your class text is appropriate for this occasion, especially in relation to the theme of this fine book. On an ordinary ocean trip there is a point beyond which there can be no returning to the home port. Trouble, shortage of fuel, or danger can only be met by continuing on to a port on the other side. There must be a forgetting of the things that are behind and a pressing on toward a goal. At occasions like this we should pause in reflection upon the past and look back over the way we have come. | trust that as you think back upon your school days at Lynden Christian, a sense of deep gratitude to God for the great heritage of His Covenant promises will possess you. You have arrived at a very significant compass point in your life. For twelve years you have been getting your bearings upon which to project a sucessful journey of life. No doubt, too, you feel a certain unwillingness to leave behind these many associations and activities. In your class text, Paul indicates that in the Christian life there are many points of no re- turn. He does not want us to think that we are being inevitably carried along with the winds and currents of the stream of life. Rather, he stresses that by deliberate resolution we must leave be- hind the things in our past and with earnest intent press on to the goal, the only goal of the Christ- ian life: the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. In this, your declared resolution, we, your parents, teachers, and friends heartily congratulate you. We assure you, too, that our best wishes and prayers follow you as you ''PRESS ON . Sponsoring and preparing various activities has been our biggest contribution during the past year. All shipmates were invited to the annual Mixer at the beginning of the year and the all -school party in May. The selection of cheer and song leaders, pep rallies, the Christmas tournament, the awards as- sembly and the student body electi6ns were supervised by the Council to further school spirit. Picking volunteers from the student body, the Council sponsored the publication of the Christ- ian Hi Light. The Student Council is furthering the improvement of school property by improving locker and camera room facilities, and various other projects around school. CDs, Journey A «far At the close of our high school days, let us pause just a few moments and look back over our past four years. | am sure we can all remember that first day of high school. It was all so differ- ent and yet so wonderful. Our sponsors during our Freshman year were Miss Irene Hanenburg and Mr. Andrew De Jong. When we returned as sophomores we felt more at ease and accustomed to high school life. One of the highlights of this year was our class hike to Sumas Mountain. Miss Betty Shoemaker and Mr. Bernard Engbers were our advisors while we were Sophomores. Our Junior year was filled with many busy and exciting days. Soon after we returned to school we chose our class rings. Then on the week before Christmas our rings arrived. How proud we were and still are of those rings. Mrs. Marie Meenk and Rev. Daniel Van Houte were our Junior advisors. Another important event of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. We had spent many hours pre- paring for this occasion, and were all delighted with the results. We hoped the Seniors enjoyed the Spanish atmosphere, with the theme, Vaya Con Dios, as much as we did. No doubt, our Senior year was the busiest, but also the happiest and most wonderful year of our entire high school career. Many of our classmates have won honors for our class and school by participating in choir, special musical groups, debate, speech contests, dramatics, athletics, and many other events. We were the honored guests of the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. We also en- joyed our Senior Masquerade Party and our last get-together—Senior Skip Day. Now as we stand at the opening of a new period in our lives we must truly thank our God for having taken care of us thus far in our young lives. May we also ask Him for His continued blessing upon us. But may we also do our indi- vidual part by ''Following Jesus’’. NORMAN DE BOER During the past year, the Captain of our lives took to Himself one of our esteemed faculty members, Mr. Norman De Boer. He was a charter member of our high school faculty, and has given informative instruction in the history of yesterday and the problems of today. The high esteem which was char- acteristic of his quiet yet exemplary life exerted a noble influence upon many who sat in his classes. The memory of him will always be cherished by those who had him for a teacher. UL, Weyelaccrs: en The Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen complete the number of students in our high school. Upon entering high school, most of our time as Fresh- men is devoted to studying and adjusting to high school life. Secular music also fills a part in our program. One of the events of this year was our Christmas Concert. Here we sang of our Savior's birth and the joyous feeling we all experience around this season. We are glad to have choir robes this year. These were made and given to us by the Mothers’ Club. Mrs. Ripperda is providing a well-grounded foundation for our future choirs by teaching in our grade school. Here they are taught fundamentals of singing, such as pronunciation of words and counting.
