E X EC E v lor 'I'53 .---A Q I .-S, l : Q .l t h jTV,E,Tl,X 5 A Published by THE STUDENTS of THE LYNDEN CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL AT LYNDEN WASHINGTON IOR FQREWORD The Annual Staff considers it a privilege to present to you this 53 edition of the EXCELSIOR. This annual represents a large amount of time and effort spent by the staff under the direction of our advisors, Mr. Engbers and Mrs. Meenk. The theme we have chosen this year is Light. ln carrying out this theme we have pictured the administration as the Light Givers whose efforts are reflected by the Light Bearers which consists of the student body. This light is upheld by the special school activities held through- out the school year. The many clubs in our school have also done much to stimulate this light. Since sports and parties also have a place in our school life, we have portrayed them as our Lighter Moments. We sincerely hope that this portrayal of the year's activities may be enioyed by all, and that our efforts will have been worthwhile. ... .. The light which he has shed upon our way as he instructed us in the Word of God will be deeply appreciated by all as we prepare for the various tasks which lie ahead of us. Not only has he enlightened us as a teacher in Bible, but also in speech. His leadership in the extra curri- cular activities has given our school much honor and prestige. He has contributed much to the success of our high school plays. His good sense of humor and understanding of students' problems will make him linger in our memories. It is our sincere hope and prayer that our Lynden Christian School may be privileged to have him on its teaching staff for many years 'to come and that God may richly bless his work among us. 74536 af Zaaiente ' -D.Jx X Light Givers Light Bearers Light Upholders Light Stimulators Lighter Moments 12 19 10 16 22 29 31 5-Student Talent Review over KPUG. 10 11 12 14 19-21-Drama Club play- Lavender and Ol . . . HOUG President The Lynden Christian school board extends to you, graduating class of 1953, its heartiest congratulations. May the Christian training of this institution have a last- ing effect on the years that lie ahead. The theme Light as set forth in this book is well chosen. As light of the day is essential for all manner of physical growth, so is the light of God's revealed Word is essential for all spiritual growth. As parents we consider it a blessing and privilege that in a measure we have been bearers of light , we do not possess any of our own, but have to receive that light from the Holy Scriptures, so we may be safeguarded from the false doctrines and isms which are so prevalent in our day. As you part from your school and are entering a new phase of life, we bid you to search diligently for the true light ever conscious for the need of it, so your spiritual life may blossom and bring forth fruit abundantly. DE BOER President The Student Council with Mr. Koops and Mr. Snapper as advisors have been very active directing the business affairs and activities of the student body. The Student Council sponsored the Mixer to help the entering Freshmen and other students become better acquainted with each other. An assembly schedule was drawn up to provide the student body with an assembly approximately every three weeks. Special assemblies are also provided by a committee. Money for the treasury was obtained by the sale of student body tickets. This money was used for many worthwhile proiects which were carried out by the stu- dents. Some of these proiects were: a service memorial honoring our graduates in service, tumbling mats, athletic equipment, and school improvement in general. As one of the special proiects, basketball backboards were installed on a track system in the gymnasium. These backboards aided physical education classes and turnout sessions. The Student Council has worked diligently for our high school and its members found it a privilege to do so. We are grateful for the cooperation of the student body which made our work pleasant and successful. STUDENT COUNCIL H. De BOER, President. LIGHT PRGVIDER 1 V l 9 Dear Graduates: The theme of Excelsior this year is a very good one. Light! To be a bearer of light is the chief aim and purpose of the regenerated Christian. Jesus said so. Read Matt. 5:l4,l6. You could choose no better motto for your lives than Bearers of Light. I have an unusual little figurine at home. lf it absorbs light during the daylight hours it shines brightly when the lights are extinguished after dark. At any time during the long, dark hours of night, there it is-shining! But if my little figurine is kept out of the daylight for a few days it loses its power to give off light. Before you can be bearers of light you will need to absorb light too. You will need to absorb it from the true light of the world. Uohn 1:91 May it be said of you, as it was said of Jesus' disciples, They took knowledge of them that they had been with Jesus. Those disciples evidently were reflecting the light they had re- ceived because of their close association with the Lord. The world is terribly dark. It needs lights. God has given to Christians the high privilege of being the lights in this world of sin and darkness. Go forth then, you Bearers of light. May your light never be extinguished. May God bless you! Even though we were Freshmen, we were at last in high school. This made us feel very important. Much of our shyness was lost at the Mixer which was sponsored by the Student Coun- cil. Our home room teachers were Mr. Van Alten and ' Miss Shoemaker. No, this year will never be forgotten. -fl It September found us as Sophomores this year. During the course of the year 6 decided change had come over us. We were more sure of ourselves and also more capable. Mr. Engbers and Miss Shoemaker guided us through our Sophomore school year. After a hard-earned vacation we returned as upper classmen. Our Junior year had several highlights. On the day before Thanksgiving we received our class rings. The Seniors were honored by a Junior-Senior Banquet which we prepared. We owe much of the success of this banquet to Mr. De Boer who was our home room teacher. It was during our Junior year that two of our class members had the wonderful experience of representing our school at Girls' and Boys' State which was held at Ellensburg. Now as we look back nine months, we remember coming to school as Seniors. Those supposed extra little attentions are now ours. One of our members was privileged to participate in the Voice of Democracy contest in Bellingham. Four of our classmates traveled to Seattle to enter the state history contest and placed among the winners. Much class talent was shown by those who took part in The debate teams. Our basketball games were enlivened by the Senior members. Our Senior mixed quartet and sextette proved our musical ability. Our Skip Day won't be forgotten very soon. After our Baccalaureate services we now have the crowning glory of all, graduation. We are all very happy and thankful that we have reached this stage of our life but also sad that we will never be together again. We realize that God's clock does not stand still and that we have our work to do. lt is only by God's grace that we have come this far. We trust we will be led by Him in the future in whatever we do. ii Left To right: Frank Kaemingk, Student Council Rep.g Roger Likkel, Presidentg Juella Baiema, Sec- retaryg Ed Henken, Vice President, Vernon Lan- inga, Treasurer. ,M A A Q . A feeling of unity is born as the pupils together with the Teachers stream into chapel. With reverence we sing those inspiring songs and have the Scriptures opened to us. The students take charge of our chapel services in everything except the brief message based on Scripture which is the task of the faculty. We feel that chapel is an important factor in our spiritual activities. For us chapel is the pause of spirit- ual refreshment. LIGHT UPHOLDERS LIGHT UPHOLDERS The Mission Club as an active group tries to stimulate an interest in missions. This group realizes that they are to be shining examples everywhere. One of their protects was giving baskets of food to the needy in this area during Thanksgiving time. During the Christmas season, toys were sent to the Galilean Home for chil- dren. The Rest Homes in Bellingham are visited by them, where they present the Gospel in song. ln as much as ye do it unto the least ot these, ye have done it unto me. The Mission Club is beneficial to the members themselves as well as to others. MISSION CLUB Speaker Special Number 5009 Leadef ' 1 LIGHT UPHOLDERS I . MIXED CHORUS I X MRS.
