ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Now each of us from time to time, Has gazed upon the sea. And watched the warships pulling out, to keep this country free. And most of us have read a book, Or heard the lusty tale About the men who sail these ships. Through lightning, wind, and hail. But there ' s a place within each ship, That stories never reach, And there ' s a special breed of men. The legends rarely reach. It ' s dawn below the waterline. It takes a living toll, A hot metal living Hell, That sailors call the Hole, It houses engines run by steam. That makes the shafts go round, A place of fire, noise and heat. That beats your spirits down. Where boilers like Hellish heart. With blood of angry steam Are of molded Gods without remorse. And nightmares in a dream. Where turbines scream like tortured souls. Alone and lost in Hell, As ordered from somewhere above. They answer every bell. The men who keep the fires lit, And make the engines run. Are strangers to the world of night And rarely see the sun. And every hour of every day. They keep the watch in hell. For if the fires fail. Their ship ' s a useless shell. I ' ve seen those sweat-soaked hero ' s fight In superheated air. To keep their ship alive and right. Though no one knows they ' re there. And thus they ' ll fight for ages on, Till warships sail no more. Amid the boilers ' mighty heat. And the turbines ' hellish roar. So when you see a ship pull out. To meet a warlike foe. Faintly remember if you can. The sailors who sail the hole. FINALLY TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE LYNDE MC CORMICK: Upon our joining the U. S. SEVENTH Fleet, VADM G. P. STEELE, the Commander, indicated we would be tasked with a variety of challenging assignments which would test our readiness and also have periods of relaxation with interesting port visits. True to his word, our seven month deployment was certainly that and this cruisebook captures some of those moments , The cruise was a highly successful one in material condition and operational increased and our commitments were ful in fleet exercises and operations incl destroyer duties and comprised amphibi submarine and anti-air warfare and con with the Republic of China. These evo day performance were marked with utmos which drew warm praise from our senior credit upon yourselves and LYNDE MC CO wherein our readiness expertise steadily ly met. Participation uded every aspect of ous operations, anti- ducting joint exercises lutions and our day to t professionalism s and reflected great RMICK. While serving as squadron flagship and when visited by COMSEVENTHFLT, COMTHIRDFLT and the Secretary of the Navy, our ship was complimented for both performance and appearance, To successfully operate and maintain a ship like the LYNDE MC CORMICK, it requires a tremendous team effort and loyalty which was fully shared by all hands. Over 300 officers and men joined in the manning of watch and battle stations, repairing and maintaining machinery and sophisticated electronics equipments and the replenishment of food and parts . Our visits in ports of call were no less exemplary and out of thousands of individual liberties no incident marred the record. So as you look through these pages and recall those memories, I would like all of you to know that I am forever grateful to your superlative efforts and support, and feel deeply privileged to have sailed along with you. 7 4 v-i m H.
