: sc cSRA SRR LO IE Through many stimulating experiences in fields such as science, education, religion, music and business the spirit of friendliness and service characteristic of Lynchburg College cause us to realize that we can not isolate ourselves from the problems facing society. Knowing that the task ahead will call for courageous, ambitious and understanding leaders, we must strive to use our talents and develop our personalities as we look toward the future. Amy MAXEY Katuy Davis MARIAN PHILLIPS Co-Fditors Business Manager We Dedicate... Today education is standing on a pedestal, unchallenged, as the hope of our world. It is recognized as the cornerstone of democracy and the principal means for maintaining our American way of life. There is one in particular among our faculty who personifies this ideal. He tries to instill in his students, above all else, the ability and desire to think. for themselves. He is not only a valuable asset to campus life but to the personal lives of the individuals with whom he comes in contact. For his boundless energy, his unsurpassable vitality, and his deep devotion to his chosen profession of education, we dedicate this our 1954 ARGONAUT to WALTER WINEMAN. Dr. OrviILLE W. Wake In a sense each of us lives in the future. Our hopes for tomorrow light the present moment as the sunshine of the coming day illuminates the dawn. The call of tomorrow has gently drawn us through the years and brought us to this day. In our time the world is suffering because it has no clear vision of what it might become. It is hard for us to project our hopes and aspirations beyond the atomic clouds and create in the heavens beyond an image of the future toward which we can press. But the yearnings of the heart, aided by the light of the mind, have always pierced the clouds and will do so again. People with sensitive minds and pure hearts will recreate a vision which will become their future hope and present strength. The great hope which your college has for a world in which free intelligence and a sympathetic heart can produce more humanity among men is not dimmed by the present darkness. Those of you who have caught its spirit will always be strengthened each present moment by the vision which calls to you from the future. ORVILLE W. WAKE, President TURNER, JR.
