Dean W illiam Graves Shackelford fig William Graves Shackelford was our Professor of Mathematics for sixteen years, ,H 'G' our beloved Dean for most of that time, and Dean Emeritus until his death on Ian- Q uary twenty-second last. l He was friend, preceptor, companion in the work, to all of us. He was so willing yi ' ff, to share the load that he carried too heavy a burden. So modest and unassuming was 2 fi! he that few people realized the wonderful amount and the varied nature ofl the work git, 1' . . . . 1 :F Q which he accomplished. No task was too trivial or too hard for the Dean to assume, lj and though attempting far too much for the strength of any one man, no word of com- F ,vii plaint or even mention of heavy work ever passed his lips. A His associates will never forget his constant watchfulness of college interests and W campus activities, his unfailing energy and courage, his versatility, his quiet humor, and his keen unswerving decisions in all matters involving a principle of right or wrong. S' His students will long remember his kindly interest in them and in their work, his A' courteous hearing of their cliiiiculties, his earnest advice, his kindly reproofs, his sin- nil 5, cere encouragement. px, He saw our school grow from an Academy and junior College, poorly supported, 19,3 wi, to a flourishing Senior College of standard grade. The part that he personally had in 1 i this development cannot be overestimated. Through him the ideals of the founders if were perpetuated in the new institution. He kept us on a constant course through the tix ff' days of transition. He, as no other man or woman, furnished continuity to the pro- i gram of the college. ' E ' 'F As a husband and father he was loved and revered. His was a Christian home, of Q' the substantial sort which has been the foundation of our national life. The iniiuence 21 mi. of this example, both upon the young people of the college and in the community, may A well become a subject for contemplation. Ili V. Although a quiet man, he made his imprint upon the life of the city. As a mem- fl' i ber of the Lions Club of Lynchburg he was loved and respected by many business il, men. As a teacher in the Bible School of the Euclid Avenue Christian Church, and . as an elder for many years in the First Christian Church, he touched and inspired many is 4 lives. , In educational circles he was ver well and favorabl known. As a teacher in the iii y Y ,. State for over a quarter of a century, he was known both within the high school and the college ranks, as a successful teacher, a careful administrator, and as one interested ltiljb Ti in basic problems of education. For a number of years he taught in the summer 'r' ll school of the University of Virginia. His voice was often heard in the annual meet- ill ,ati ings of the college administrators, and of the State Teachers Association. And so, a true friend, a courteous, gentleman, an earnest Christian, a useful citi- 1,-ll zen, has gone to his reward. NVQ miss his daily presence, but we shall long remember Vi I' his example. His life was an inspiration. E STANTON c. cnawronn. il t i 1 I fl ll ii . v 28 il, ,li if .1 '- A Wa- M-,aw is W A L-2 iv H if H efcfillh: X sf-4.
