The man that blushes is not quite a brute. L Q A Message from the Seniors We, the class of 1954, have conflicting emotions as we say farewell. Now we are leaving the high school where so many memories of our last three years are housed. Yet they will always remain with us. For here we have met and attained the acknowl- edged standards of education, with an enduring satisfaction of accomplishment. However, a natural feeling of sadness surges through us as we realize that our high school days are at an end. In future years we will relive all the joys experienced at Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Here we have acquired not only a mastery of subject matter but, what is perhaps more important, a spirit of cooperation and friendship, ever prevalent in these hallowed halls. 5 . Sincerely grateful for the guid e of our teachers, we hope that our lives will prove worthy of their ever-present confi ence and faith. Activities started with a food sale held at Lurie's. The sorority's annual dance Autumn Serenade was a huge success, with music by Jerry Culick and his orchestra. The sorority devoted its services to completing a project a month. Among these were the construction of posters for the Public Library, decoration of shop windows in behalf of the Tuberculosis Drive, and assisting with the bazaar at the City Hospital. At Christmas time the Phi Delts adopted a needy family and presented them with a full-course Yuletide meal, clothes, and presents. Amidst the glitter of sparkling snowflakes. depicting the theme of While Christmas, the annual Phi Delta formal was held at the Century Club-highlighting the evening was the crowning of the Snow Queen. In February Phi Delta invited its prospective members to a tea at the home of Margo Harris. Phi Delta and Kappa Rho Fraternity sponsored the first spring dance of the year. The spring season also found the members honoring their mothers at a Mother's Day Tea, held at the home of the President, Betty Anne Gargiulo. Phi Delta contributed to the Heth G. Coons Scholarship Fund and made a donation to the Community Chest. Climaxing the year's activities, Phi Delta met for the last time at Hotel Johnstown for the traditional banquet. Outgoing Seniors received gifts, and the Sorority Prophecy and Will were read to the delight of all. Our sorority sponsor. Miss Theda Mosher received a gift in appreciation of her sincere friendship and guidance. Best wishes for happiness and success are expressed to all the departing members. Although an outstanding year was not realized, a creditable 500 record was attained. A pleasant surprise was the timely hitting of sopho- more, George Schneider. George contributed greatly to many A. H. S. victories with key hits. With several lettermen returning, there should be an improvement on last seasonls record. Schneider, Gabe Agosta, Don Czelusniak, Pete Benosky. Art Reiff, Hal Noyes and Bill Richardson, all having gained helpful experience during the past year, should make this base- ball season one of which A. H. S. can be proud. L.-.an . ne. ....A.- Century Club Poetry Prizes First prize to Linda Lee Hewson for a collection of poems: Snow,,' Sunlight, and Oneness SNOW Snow Casting your blue-white shawl over the earth Shimmering loneliness Whose icy jewels bewitch life. You are the stillness of an instant When life has gone and time has no meaning. You are a dream, frozen in crystal Waiting to be summoned By the Sun. TWILIGHT From where I sit l see the new moon Piercing the center of the heavens . . A silver scirnitar of light Against a fading sky. The trees stretch up their arms Like thin-etched pencil lines As if to catch and hold The fast-receding day Within their grasp. But fickle is day's love For she has fled the embrace of earth And died. But wait . . .l She left a tear . . . The evening star. LINDA LEE HEWSON Second prize to Eugenia Kansas. ONENESS Alone, In the earliness of the morning I walk beside the sea. The sun transforms the pale, thin mist Into translucent wonder, The sand is cool and damp, Still bearing the scent of high tide. The foam-fleclced waves sparkle ln the sun . . . while deep beneath Dark shadows move . . . as silent and as Lonely as my heart. Lonely Because of the oneness of my soul, Because of the sacred muse of individuality That dwells within my spirit. But glad . . . Clad of the loneliness, Glad of the sweet, sweet sadness. I am in myself a thinking, living unit: In my own hands Lies destiny. LINDA LEE HEWSON THE STREAM The stream enclosed between the sloping hills Reflects the pines as oler its bed it glides, Etching the shores in lace of icy frills, And whispering, a secret it confides. The pines' responding murmur is unheard When waters dash against impeding rocks, For peace, by roar and clamor, is disturbed As waters fight in vain the stolid blocks. How like the stream is youth's exuberance To meet head-on the obstacles of life, To swirl and crash and lash in ignorance . . . Tranquility forgotten in such strife! But yon', the stream now wends again serene, More calm, more wise, more beautiful, the stream.
