The new members of the classes were pleased and honored to be visited on numerous occasions throughout the year by teachers and principals from other schools who, in many instances, traveled considerable distances to get first-hand information on this new phase of high school education. The high spot of the year was May 5 at which time the retail training laboratory was formally dedicated. The team not only finished one of its toughest seasons with a 5 and 2 record, but brought the Class A Championship to A.H.S. It was the first year that the gridders participated in the league. Probably the greatest victories of the season were those over Johnstown and Mont Pleasant. For the first time in eleven years an Amsterdam Eleven beat Johnstown. The Mont Pleasant victory was the big one of the season. Considered as the powerhouse of the area and the team headed for the Class A Crown, the Red Raiders came to Amsterdam to add another win to the four they had already won. But the tide was turned and a fighting A.H.S. Eleven whipped the Raiders by the astounding score of 37-6. After that Troy and Nott Terrace also succumbed to A.H.S. The Nott Terrace game brought an end to one of Amsterdam High School' s most colorful seasons. Hampered constantly by rain, the Hilltoppers barely got eight of their twelve scheduled games played. The team won four, lost three and tied one. With most of the veterans leaving the year before, last year' s team was made up of almost all rookies. Jack Tracy' s boys should have a good season this year with most of last year' s team returning. The baseball team is also playing in the Class A League and presents a tougher schedule than teams in the past have faced. JOHNNY Versoke' s I.V.' s came through with one of their unusually fine records this year. Winning 13 and losing 4. They played a good brand ot ball all season. Lead in the scoring department by Tony Squeglia, Hal Sutter and Dick Gardiner and in the play making department by Gus Mihalzo and Frank Szurek. The I.V.' s were beaten only by Mont Pleasant and Nott Terrace with the Nott Terrace games both being decided by one point. For the second year in a row the I.V.' s decidedly whipped their city rivals from St. Mary' s showing plenty of promising players. Little Eddie Wells and Big Chuck Marshall were the main cogs in the scoring department. With four of the previous years starting five returning the Hilltoppers ended up in second place in the Class A League and participated in the post season playoffs where the A.H. S. cagers showed that they were among the tops. 4 Among the more unfavorable things that happened to A.H.S. this past season were the two losses to S.M.I. Only in existance for the second year, a large number of boys tried out for the team and the matches were attended by a good size crowd of rooters. Coach Ed Cionek' s grunt a.nd groan men participated in five matches this year, winning two and losing three. The A.H.S. boys took one from Van Hornsville and Richfield Springs. They were downed twice by the matmen from Mont Plea- sant and once by Van Hornsville. If the boys show as much interest 'in wrestling as was shown this year, it should soon become a major sport. Schuyler QSittingJ 86 ' 2 THE comedy, You Can' t Take It With You, by Moss Hart and George Kaufman was pre- sented by the Class of 1949. The cast under the direction of Mrs. M.d!. Schuyler performed before an enthusiastic audience that thronged the auditorium. The ju ges, Mrs. F. Forest Howe, Mr. D. Locklin, and Attorney W. E. Moore presented the Michael E. Kleopfel Memorial Award of the Little Theater, to Elizabeth Scott. The home of Martin Vanderhof in New York provided the setting of the play which re- volved around the life of a somewhat eccentric family. The part of Mr. Vanderhof, or Grandpa, a genial old man who lived for the pleasures life offered rather than ,its material values, was capably portrayed by james A Smeallie. Essie Carmichael, Mr. Vanderhof' s granddaughter was cleverly played by Nancy Aulisi who had great hopes of becoming a ballerina and was spurred on by her husband, Ed, humerously enacted by Robert letter, who provided xylophone music to which Essie danced. Ed' s other hobby of printing resulted in circulars which later caused a great deal of trouble. Penelope Sycamore, Grandpa' s daughter, who wrote plays because eight years before a typewriter was left at the Vanderhof home by mistake was played by Mary Cooper, Much confusion was provided during the play by Paul Sycamore and Mr. DiPinna who spent their days making firecrakers and rockets. These roles were ably played by Ralph Caruso, Ir. and Umberto DeRose, respectively. Throughout the play, Reba, the colored maid enacted by Iacquelyn Burke, and Donald, Reba' s boy friend, by Stephan Friedman, supplied the audience with laughs galore. Elizabeth Scott, made a delightful appearance as Alice, Paul and Penny' s other daughter, the only one who had escaped the mild insanity that prevailed among the other members of the family. Alice announced that she had a date with the boss' s son, Tony Kirby, adeptly played by Charles Dana who though wealthy and having prestige, readily accepted the pecu- liarities of Alice' s family. Meanwhile, Martin Geruso as Henderson, a collector from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, called on Grandpa and demanded that he pay income tax, which he had never done, and after a futile argument hastily left with promises of future government action. Boris Kolenlmov, Essie' s Russian dancing teacher was skillfully portrayed by James Knezich. In the midst of a quiet evening at home, Tony and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. - Kirby, realistically played by Richard Tenison and Mary Aim Krupczak paid a premature visit on the Vanderhofs and Sycamores. During the course of a very strained evening, Ed- ward Majewski, Richard Corcuera, and Robert Millett, ably portraying F. B. I. agents, rushed in and arrested everyone. As a result, Alice decided to leave home and not marry Tony. ny. Nellie Znamierowski,capably playing the part of Grand Duchess Olga Katrina, a friend of Boris' , appeared and prepared to make blintzes for the family. After an argument with Mr. Kirby, Grandpa straightened things out. The firecrackers were destroyed, Grandpa didn' t have to pay an income tax, and Kirby realized that the Vanderhofs were not so bad after all. Even Alice saw the light, and as the curtain closed, she and Tony were making wedding plans. faq 7065! E, the vivacious, intellectual, and omnivescent Seniors of 1949, being of sound mind and philanthropic disposition do make known our last will and testament. That well knoywn wolfess, Carol Stryski, bequeaths to Maxine Sirmon her charm and ability to capture any boy' s heart. Connie Davis leaves to John Kalinowski those qualities which tend to confuse Miss Mosher' s life. We don' t know how the Mixed Chorus will survive without Mary Alice Hagaman and Wirmie Foss, but we hope Helen Kosinski and Marge Davison will do their best in taking over. Phyl Huffmire and the Journalism Class hope next year' s Editor and Item Staff will enjoy working on the Item as much as they did. Helen Kansas, the skipper of the Yearbook, leaves her whip and her promptness and perseverance to next year' s editor. Bob Dylong, the only student in the Vergil class leaves his title to anyone who can justly claim lt. lim Knezich, gives his twinkle toes to Buddy Turek. fTa.ke care of them Buddy, they' re scarce commoditiesl Betty Scott, the Senior Class' gift to Broadway, leaves her thespian talents to Sonia Bush. Frank Della Posta, Republican nominee for the presidency in 1960, leaves his execu- tive ability to Bill Levine and little brother, Thomas Della Posta. Elaine Novak' s vim, vigor and vitality have been left to Judy Schuster. To Sally Greco will go Nancy Aulisi' s outstanding leadership and personality. Mary Cooper leaves her linguistic ability to be divided between two French students who really need it. , john Shandorf bestows his flashy ties, socks, and clothes to dress up the sloppiest Junior. Ioan Dickey leaves her gift of gab to Marilyn Gahr who isn' t doing so bad herself. Eugene Canale leaves the 88 fast-flying keys on the ivory board and his dead-pan expression to Ed Staknis. Eva Constantino leaves her gymnastic abilities and double dribble to Louise Glamm Bill Tarnowski hangs up his football and basketball shoes on a hook, hoping they will fit some underclassman. As for David Bonafede---we, of the Senior Class, just leave him ----- --- john Bryk says, Si1ence is golden, and thus leaves his gold mine to jim Lyons. Janet Beer bequeaths her amicable disposition to Barbara Devine, Nick' s girl. Bob letter leaves his witty retorts to Norman Thompson. Fran Kukowski, in spite of Mr. DiBlasi, leaves her reckless driving to any irre- sponsible Junior. To james Millett goes his brother Bob' s skill in performing a half-nelson. Stan ltggizzkowski, leaves his diplomacy and tactfulness to Bernie Kuczek who needs em y. Bob Bird leaves his mad scientist brother to the Chemistry Department in hopes that he devises a bomb better than the atom. Janaes Smeallie leaves his ability to do almost anything to a few Juniors who can do not ing. Robert Scott leaves his ability to be late every morning to Michael Sollecito. Marilyn Gilman gives her messy locker to any Soph stupid enough to accept it. These roving reporters got one and while glancing around the earth we spotted a new town. It seems that due to the discovery of Long Life Licorice by Professor Einstein Miskinis shortly after graduation, people are able to retain their age and live longer. He was generous enough to make it available for a price to all his fellow classmates of ' 49. Then they all settled in one spot and a thriving community has taken the place of a once barren desert. Let us take a tour of this city called Madretsma and see what' s new with the graduates of the Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School, Class of 1949. To get there, we take Druce' s Rocket Ship piloted by none other than daredevil Reichal, and his co-pilot Lorraine Run them down Blazejewski. As we walk down Main Street we see Burke',s Robot Maid Service with Stephen Friedman as General Manager which guarantees housework done in 10 minutes. Next door we find Edson' s Ice Cream Parlor where we see Jacobs, Leonard, Fritz, and Bubniak eating some of Bernard Bogdan' s Body-Building Atomic Ice Cream. Overhead we see Siekowski' s super slow speed rocket balloon advertising the coming picture, Mystery at 3 O' clock at Riccio' s Ritzy Theater, starring those famous detectives Richard Sherlock Graham and George Holmes Eigabroadt. As we venture farther on down Madretsma' s Main Street, we pass the respectable office of those excellent ex-criminal lawyers, Cappuchio, Constantino and Sapone. There is smoke pour- ing out of the doors and windows, and we investigate, finding that they are settling the life-long case of Davis vs Krupczak. Then we are attracted to the smell across the street coming out of the Canale-DeRose Deli- cious Dialectic Delicatessen. Entering, we spied some of Delos' delightful sugar-covered dough- nut holes which he has been collecting since graduation. After talking over old times and swallow- ing our repast, we again set forth, only to find quite a large gang outside the next store where the glittering marquee says Panunzio' s Pool Parlor. We move closer and recognize many old faces, among them Dabiere, Dickens, Farina, and Felker. On the corner across from Neri' s News I won' t tell you what' s in the back Room, we see two men fighting for this peddler' s paradise. They are the Allen' s. Ed is selling tickets to the moon, while Ioe is letting anyone look through his new telescope to see this. just then the earth trembles under us and we are greatly astonished but the friendly cop, Bill Vanderpoel tells us that Bird and Bullis are carrying on experiments in their laboratories on the outskirts of town. Because our feet are killing us, we hire one of Kietzman' s Kiddee Kars and scoot off to City Hall where we are greeted by Richard Bik, the city treasurer, who is famous for his backward bookkeeping. He sends us up to see the mayor. We pass the Unemployment Bureau and see Langley and Lampkin arguing with a prospective employer. They want more time off. Then the big oaken doors of the Mayor' s office open and we see Harry Flint puffing a fat cigar and enjoying life. He jumps to his feet and welcomes us to his fair tovm and also Mayor Flint introduces us to his two assistants, Water and Liquor Commissioner Al China and Golf and Pinball Controller Rich Salamack. All in all the situation looks favorable in the political center. We say goodbye and again enter the hallway, only to find Criminologist Corcuera rushing by hot on the trail of those stealthy underworld characters of Caruso, Albright, and DiCaprio, the bankrobbers. It's quite a case but Fearless Corcuera will crack it. Upon reaching the main hall, we gaze curi- ously upon a little old man who wasn' t able to buy Miskinis' Long Life Licorice. His smile is gone and it takes all his efforts to push the broom. Every once in awhile he stops, emits some oratory and motion frantically. Then he sadly shakes his head and goes back to his job. Who is this janitor?-eWho is this man?--Why, none other than our old class president, Frank Della Posta. It is a great day for Frankie and we spend some time cheering the old gent up. Because we are hungry, he recommends a local drugstore for a bite to eat. On the way, we pass the Civic Auditorium where is posted the coming of the Oskash Symphony under the capable giregfon of Sir Charles W. Dana and featuring that dynamic trio of the keys, Foss, Gaska, and ez . Another block down on the other side we find Moran' s Muscle Building Emporium. Inside, Tommy is busy building up Zmugzda, and Piechecki. After a short hike, we stand in front of a large impressive building. The sign tells us it' s Wilson' s. Inside Dick, the third generation of owners, shows us to a flossy table. It is said that Dick has expanded his drug store into a chain which is competing with Rexall. Behind the soda counter is Chelsea Porter, champion jerk, soda that is. After a fine meal, we treat out feet to Schultz' s Soothing Salve for sore feet. Now we feel fine and bid farewell to the Proprietor and direct our ambling ways to the center of the town' s culture. 89 L ! First, we visit the small marble art gallery where there is a special display of the works of the foremost American artist, Raymond Laske. Also there is some abstract art by Madame Tokarowski, portraits by Lady Topping, and Modern Art by Monsieur Hull. We move on to the pride and joy, the campus of M.I.T.-- yes, McHarg' s Institute for Twerps. High above the ad- ministration buildings we see fluttering in the breeze the colors of the University, burple and mold. We discover that under Sarah as President is David Vidulich as Academic Dean, Ange- line Vairetta, Dean of Meng and Richard Marsh, Dean of Women. Miss Znamierowski is teach- ing Russian . Mr. Tenison is the teacher of serious speech and other bad habits. None other than Prof. Sievers is teaching psychology. The football team coached by Stan Vainauskas had a fairly successful year. From one of the rooms we hear wierd noises and, upon looking in, we find Stephen Dzikowicz teaching violin. A Miss Wells is teaching a new popular language, Latin. Dr. letter is head of the mad scientific and research laboratory. Right now Bob is home recuperating from concoction of the brain. Let us leave the busy sections of town behind and proceed onward into the quiet realms of Store Heights where we see Mrs. L. Hughes Knee Beverly Larsonj sending her thirteen dear little ones to school before she and Mrs. Richard KShir1ey Doesburgl Farrell chew the rag over the back fence. Make way here comes Bryk riding one of Buczaki' s Beetle Baum Bicycles and selling the Daily Dope in which that famous gossip column written by Louella Parsons Huffmire appears. We see that her exclusive today is that Bob Hughes has just divorced his 20th wife and says that he is through with matrimony. As we read on, we see that those five well known women Bartoszek, Ciotto, Davis, Peters, and Tybor have just returned from a fruitful trip to Reno. AlsoCongresswomen1ager and Jennings have arrived safely in Moscow where they hope to re- form the government. In her advice to the lovelorn, we see that Miss Huffmire tells a certain Beer to go to a coming concert and another bit of advice goes to Handsome I-lotaling. As we proceed down the street, we hurry past the home of those batty bachelors, Walczak and Wegrowski and we catch a glimpse of Mrs. Frances Kukowski Melosky and Mrs. Brooks Knee Patricia Corcoranl flying by on their way to Lawton and Leszcsynski' s Laundromat where they will undoubtedly meet Mrs. Case Knee Barbara Smalleyl with whom they will discuss the recent marriage of Rose Scafidi and me ueuut U1 me nnrke' s uaugnter in the ballet. As we turn the corner, we are nearly run over by that fast-flying milk delivery truck of Pidluszny' s Dairy which is making a hurried delivery to Mrs. Iuozitis. On down the street the Rifeoppo spinsters are seen still diligently polishing their aged hopechest. Good luck, girls Now we must get out our special 7-lf4 cent pieces so that we may proceed into the free state of Stoneounce which is-ruled over by King Trevett today. On we go, deep into the domain of Stoneounce where we see the sprawling mansions of Doak and Strack. Also we pass the homes of such notables as Wellman, Nikstenas, Going, English, and Kolbe. Down in a quiet valley we find Hopeless Hospital with its staff of notable doctors and nurses. As we enter over the intercom we hear Calling Dr. Ireland, wanted in Surgery. As we approach the receptionist desk we see Theresa Barbato talking to Valeria Bednarczyk. We stop and chat a few minutes before Nurses Firth, Ferguson and Hausman escort us around. In the nursery we see Nurses Covell, Curran, and Dr. Dybas working over a difficult case of the mumps. On down the corridor we pass the emergency ward and see that they have just brought in Dick Saka- dowsky, Mike Kerbelis, and Don Redding who have just smashed up in their Cole Coil Cab and nurses Bachosz, Martuscello, and Opalka giving them the best of care. In another wing of the building we see a ward filled with the members of that famous women' s football team whom it seems were beaten by the Chicago Bears. Some of those involved are Bancroft, DiBlasi, Fedullo, Greco, and Roberts. We hear that some more of our friends are here but the sight is too trying so we must omit the rest of the journey and go back to the city. Time is now fuglting and the day has been a joyous one. But wait--everyone seems to go to a nightspot after supper, so let' s tag along. It' s Danny Donohue' s Dine and Dancetorium. Ed Majewski greets us at the door and gets us a ringside table by the floor show. Danny comes over, sits, and talks. He looks like a king but it' s still good old Dan. We notice Jim Martin, the connoisseur of liquor and chief mixer of drinks. In the show we remember several girls from high school, Califano, DiSenza, Pagliaro. Tom Guiffre is M.C. while Lais tries to amuse the folks with some cornies. Orchestra music is by Bonafede and his Beat Up Boys. We glance aronmd and see many old faces and some new better halves. We meet everyone, and it' s like old homeweek for the Class of 1949. But it' s late and we' re tired, so -before we sign off, we want to say we' re sorry if we didn' t include you and sorrier if we did. The first notable event in their young lives was Hell Week spoken in deep whispers by Sopho- mores. Only Pledgees nmderstood about the cigars, tobacco, and vinegar. After this gruel- ling experience they then elected William Tarnowski, President, Richard Tenison, Vice- President, and Nicholas Cavaliere, Secretary-R-Treasurer. The Sophomores soon settled down to high school life and crammed for their first exams. Most of them came through we are glad to report. We sailed into our Junior Year and elected as President, Richard Tenisong Vice-Presi- dent, Frank Della Postag and Secretary-Treasurer, Elizabeth Scott. The most important thing to us was the Junior Prize Speaking Contest. 'The Century Club prizes went to Eliza- beth Scott for her presentation of Patterns by Amy Lowell and to Frank Della Posta for Sam Small and Paul Revere by Paul Gerard Smith. Our Junior Dance was a great suc- cess due to the hard work of all those on the committees. The gym was decorated as a circus, with music by Freddie Clute. That ended our junior Year, and then we were transformed into high and mighty Seniors We chose as our Class Officers Frank Della Posta, President, William Tamowski, Vice- Presidentg Elizabeth Scott, Secretaryg Nancy Aulisi, Treasurer. It is almost time for us to leave A.H.S. Our Class Program and Senior Ball bring these three happy years of our lives almost to a close. As the years go by, there will always be a place in our hearts for the wonderful three years we spent in A.H.S.
